Objective(s):
SWBAT develop automaticity in writing words with unaccented final syllables.

Materials and Technology Resources:


Double Scoop Game Board
Game spinner
Sentence Cards

Instructional Procedures:
a. Introduction (3-5 minutes):
Motivation/Engagement:
Tell student we will be playing a board game and that we will be opponents but still work
together as a team.

b. Activities or Learning Experiences (10-20 minutes):


Players (focus student (player 2) and teacher (player 1)) put their pieces on the section
titled "Start Here."
Player 1 reads a sentence card and repeats the underlined word.
Player 2 then writes the word that is repeated under the appropriate heading on the
writing board (No Change, E-Drop, E-drop + ition).
The reader then checks the writer's answer by comparing it to the sentence card. If it is
correct, the writer spins or rolls a die and moves that number of spaces on the playing board.
The players then switch roles--one becomes the reader and the other becomes the writer.
The first player to reach the end wins.

c. Closure (15 minutes):
Review the categories and look for patterns.
Discuss what we will work on in the future.
Give student her prize if she beats me or challenge her to a future re-match.

d. Extension activity:
Student will play the game again focusing on unaccented final syllables (base + able or
root + ible).

Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:


Teacher will help student with any difficulties identifying word patterns and/or
categories.

Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:


a. Formative:
As the game progresses, check that student is identifying word patterns and using them
correctly.
b. Summative:
Complete a grade level approved inflectional ending assessment for quarterly assessment.
