organization or individual, has an obligation to act to benefit
society at large. Social responsibility is a duty every individual has
to perform so as to maintain a balance between the economy and the
ecos ystems. A trade-off may exist between economic development, in
the material sense, and the welfare of the society and environment.
Social responsibility means sustaining the equilibrium between the
two. It pertains not only to business organizations but also to
everyone whose any action impacts the environment. This
responsibility can be passive, by avoiding engaging in socially
harmful acts, or active, by performing activities that directly
advance social goals.

also to every living creature including an insect.

die of suffocation before they reach their destination. Rhesus

of people watching them, is another eye sore in India. The fear of
the baton falling on their backs is clearly visible in their eyes. Same
is the case with thousands of animals performing in the circuses.
Research on animals is another major issue that needs to be tackled.
With tre me ndous pressure from ani mal welfar e groups in the
developed countries, companies are bringing their research work to
India, where the laws are not strict and they can get away with just
about anything.

buffaloes, let loose by dairy owners after extracting the milk are
seen loitering or sitting right in the middle of busy streets and
eating from the garbage, which consist of plastic, paper and
sometimes even pins, hooks, or battery cells. Similarly donkeys used
for carrying loads are let loose to eat from the garbage dumps. Dogs

It is quite common to see community dogs or cats living in
residential colonies. This is because due to very fast urbanization
all the open spaces are getting used up for construction of
residential complexes, and the animals like dogs and cats living on
these open areas are getting displaced. The residents that occupy
these residential buildings find these animals to be a nuisance and
want them evicted.
Another victim of urbanization in the city of Mumbai is the Borivali

organized the animal welfare and awareness programs in schools,

bringing wider vision for animal issues among the adult and
children.

Brief History Of IDA
In Defense of Animals, India was born on 31st October 1996.
Immediately the project of neutering of street dogs was taken up. A
small beginning was made in March 1997 in two garages of a
residential colony in a suburb of Mumbai. For three years IDA
INDIA worked in small ma ke shif t ca mps. With th e interv ention of
the Mumbai High Court, the Corporation handed over the premises at
Deonar to IDA INDIA on 22nd December 1999.
Deonar Centre started from 1st February 2000:
With the interv ention of the Bo mba y High Court, the Municipa l
Corporation handed over erstwhile Dog pound at Deonar to us on
22nd December 1999. After refurbishing the place, we started the
centre from 1st February 2000, to spay / neuter street animals and
render treatment to ill / injured ones.
Va s h i C e n t r e s t a r t e d f r o m 2 6 t h J u l y 2 0 0 6 :
The twin city of Mumbai viz. Navi Mumbai did not have a neutering
center for dogs for several years. Navi Mumbai Municipal
Corporation (NMMC) handed over their erstwhile Dog Pound to us to
start the spay / neuter and render treatment for street animals in
Navi Mumbai. Thus started our second centre from 26th July 2006.
Neral Centre started from 28th August 2006:
Being an eco-sensitive zone, vehicles are not permitted on the hill
station of Matheran, hence weak, emaciated horses are used to ferry
people and cargo up and down the hill. While more than 600 horses
are working in this region, there is not a single veterinarian or an

FUTURE GOALS
Some of the issues that IDA INDIA hopes to take up, but cannot do
so due to lack of volunteers:
B u l l o c k s : B u l l o c k s w o r k r e l e n t l e s s l y t h r o u g h o u t t h e d a y, i n s u n a n d
rain, through the heavy traffic on the streets of Mumbai. They are
beaten mercilessly and kicked, to make them walk faster or to run.
On top of it, they have no shelter where they can rest after a hard
day's work. They usually spend the night on the street tied to their
own carts, where they have no protection from the rain. Their
resting place is such that they cannot even sit down, as the area
where they are tied is absolutely dirty with their own muck. So all
their life they face the brunt of a hot sun and heavy rain. Being
people of limited means, the bullock cart "owners" do not take good
care of their animals that slave for them. They rarely take them to
vets, and instead treat them with their own herbal medicines. They
never vaccinate them, with the result during the monsoon season
they suffer from Foot & Mouth Disease or HS & BQ (Haemorrhaegic
Septicemia & Black Quarter) - both very painful conditions. The
saddest part of the story is that after working so hard all their lives,
they never get any retirement. When they become old and
unproductive, they land in the slaughter houses. This is how we treat
these animals, who work without any expectation of wages, bonus,
weekly holidays, etc. All they ask for is a little kindness and
compassion.
To h e l p t h e s e a n i m a l s w h a t w e n e e d t o d o i s : M o s t o f t h e b u l l o c k
carts in Mumbai are used to cart kerosene, ice and sugarcane. It
must be made compulsory for all these cart owners to carry fitness
certificates of the bullocks issued by Bombay SPCA. That will make
it necessary for every cart "owner" to bring his animal to Bombay
SPCA for a check up, in order to obtain such a certificate.
The oil companies that use bullocks to cart kerosene, must provide
the animals with a decent shed to house them when they are not
working. These companies have plenty of space available near their
refineries, on which they can easily construct sheds. These oil
companies must treat these animals as they would treat their
c o n t r a c t w o r k e r s , a n d p r o v i d e t h e m w i t h b a s i c n e e d s l i k e s h e l t e r,
food, water and medical aid.
The bullock carts carting ice are usually of old design with wooden
wheels. The design of these carts needs to be changed, so that the
carts have rubber tyres thereby reducing the neck load on the
bullock.

of 'circus' animals, who are not only deprived of their natural
lifestyle, but they are also made to walk on their hind legs, ride a
motor-cycle, etc. It has been amply proved that while animals cannot
speak or complain, they can most certain feel the humiliation,
through which they are put, by forcing them into such acts before
large crowds. The monkeys are closest to humans and have
intelligence of a related child. When we cannot imagine putting a
retarded child through such trauma, how can we permit such
treatment to an animal that is equally intelligent, but totally
helpless?
The circus trade is inherently sinful and gives wrong signals to
children. They teach children to look at fellow living creatures
merely as objects of pleasure and entertainment. There is absolutely
no education in all this.

Activities At IDA
Deonar Centre started from 1st February 2000:
At this Centre every month we spay / neuter around 600 dogs and
cats and render treatment to around 150 ill or injured animals that
are brought in by our two ambulances from the nook and corner of
M u m b a i c i t y. We h a v e a l s o s h e l t e r e d a r o u n d 1 4 5 b l i n d , o l d ,

become important.

donkeys are worked till they drop dead and bullocks are sent for
slaughter as soon as they age. While we cannot change this situation
our effort is to alleviate their suffering at least during their working
life. Our vet holds regular camps for these animals and counsels the
"owners" to take better care of the animals. He is available for
emergency calls 24 x 7 to help an ill or injured animal. This prompt
service has made the "owners" realize that it has to be a give and
take, and if they want free treatment for their animals from IDA
India, they have to follow proper animal management practices, rest
the ill animals, give nutritious diet, avoid overloading of carts and

them for performance on the streets. They are treated and
