CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

1. Functions of circulatory system.

 Carries blood- blood vessels carry blood from the heart to all tissues of the body and back
to the heart.
 Exchange nutrients, waste products, and gases with tissues.- nutrients and oxygen diffuse
from blood vessels to cells in essentially all areas of the body. Waste products and carbon
dioxide diffuse from cells, where they are produced, to blood vessels.
 Transport substances.- blood transport hormones, components of the immune system and
other substances to all areas of the body.
 Helps regulate blood pressure.- the circulatory system and the heart work together to
regulate blood pressure within a normal range.
 Directs blood flow to the tissues.- the circulatory system directs blood flow to tissues
when increased blood flow is required to maintain homeostasis.

2. What causes heart sounds?

> There are two main heart sounds the first heart sound is lubb and the second heart sound is
dupp.
- The first heart sound or the lubb, occurs at the beginning of ventricular systole and results
from closure of the AV valves.
- The second heart sound or the dupp, occurs at the beggining of ventricular diastole and
results from closure of the semilunar valves. The valves usually do not make sounds when they
open.
> Abnormal heart sounds, called murmurs, can be result from incompetent (leaky) valves or
stenosed (narrowed) valves.

3. Define;
A. Heart - Is one of the main parts of the circulatory system, the heart contracts forcefully to
pump blood through the blood vessels of the body.
B. Cardiac cycle- Refers to the repetitive pumping process that begins with the onset of cardiac
muscle contraction and ends with the beginning of the next contraction.
C. Blood vessel- Is the highway of our body that brings oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
throughout the body.
- Blood vessel has two classes the pulmonary vessels, which transport blood from the right
ventricle of the heart through the lungs and back to the left atrium, and the systematic vessels,
which transport blood through all parts of the body, from left ventricle of the heart and back to
the right atrium.
D. Blood- The fluid circulating through the heart, arteries, capillaries, and veins, carrying
nutrient and oxygen to body cells, and removing waste product and carbon dioxide.
E. Pulse- The rhythmic expansion of an artery which may felt with finger. Alternating one with
regular alternation of weak and strong beats without changes in cycle length.

4. Differentiate Arteries, Veins & Capillaries

> Arteries- A vessel in which blood flows away from the heart, in the systematic circulation
carrying oxygenated blood.
>Veins- A vessel in which blood flows toward the heart, in the systematic circulation carrying
blood that has given up most its oxygen.
>Capillaries- A vessel connecting the arterioles and venules, the walls of which act as a
semipermeable membrane for interchange of various substances between the blood and tissue
fluid.
