We can develop alternative sources of energy, and unless we try we’ll never succeed. Instead of
burning fossil fuels we should be concentrating on more economical uses of electricity, because
electricity can be produced from any sources of energy. If we didn’t waste so much energy, our
resources would last longer. We can save more energy by conservation than we can produce for the
same money. Unless we do research on solar energy, wind power, tidal power, hydroelectric plants …
our fossil fuels will run out and we’ll all freeze or starve to death. Several countries are spending
much more time and money on research because the energy from the sun, the waves, and the winds
last forever. We won’t really survive unless we start working on cleaner and safer sources of energy.

The La Tomatina is a festival held on a Wednesday towards the end of August in the town of
Buñol in the Valencia region in Spain. The week long festival includes music, parades, dancing, and
fireworks.
About 30,000 people come to the tomato fight, while Buñol population is only 9,000. There are
not many accommodations for people who come to La Tomatina, so many participants stay in
Valencia and travel by bus or train to Buñol, about 38 km outside the city.
Many trucks transport tomatoes into the center of tile town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes
come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. The signal for the beginning of the fight is
firing of the cannon, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for
himself. People who partake in this event are strongly encouraged to wear protective safety goggles
and gloves. In addition, they must squash the tomatoes before throwing for safety precautions.
Another rule is that no one is allowed to bring into this fight anything that may lead to a more serious
fight, such as a glass bottle. People must also stay away from trucks and must not tear someone else's
clothing. Somewhere between an hour and two hours, the fighting ends and the cannon is fired once
more to signal the end. At this point no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves
the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman waterway. People
find water to wash themselves, most likely at the Buñol River.

On average, more than 100,000 wildfires, also called wildland fires or forest fires, destroy two
million hectares of land in the U.S. every year. A wildfire moves at speeds of about 20 kilometers an
hour and can last for weeks, consuming everything - trees, brush, homes, and humans - in its path.
There are three conditions for a wildfire to bum: fuel, oxygen, and a heat source. Fuel includes
trees, grasses, bushes, and even homes. Oxygen is necessary for a fire to bum. Heat sources help start
the wildfire. Although most wildfires are started by people, natural factors like lightning, hot winds,
and even tile sun can all provide enough heat to start a wildfire.
Firefighters fight wildfires by removing the conditions for a wildfire to bum. Traditional
methods include using water and fire retardants to put out the fires. Firefighters also fight wildfires
with "controlled burning". These controlled forest fires remove small trees, bushes, and ground litter
from a forest. This will deprive a wildfire of fuel and prevent future forest fires.
Although often harmful and destructive to humans, wildfires play an important role in nature.
Even healthy forests contain dead trees and decaying plant matter. When a fire turns them to ashes,
nutrients return to the soil. They also remove sick plants and harmful insects from a forest. And by
burning through thick leaves and branches, wildfires allow sunlight to reach the forest floor, making it
possible for a new generation of trees to grow.

You probably hear a lot about the environment. But do you really worry about it? Do you help to save the
Earth? Cleaning a planet is not a task for only one person. People everywhere have to get involved and
understand this is our world. If we pass the world about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling, the
destiny of this planet can change.
Reducing the amount of waste you produce is the best way to help the environment. Did you switch off the
water while brushing your teeth in the morning? You should do it! Did you walk to school or did you use
public transportation?
Reusing is another way of being environmentally friendly. Try to find ways to use things again! Take cloth
sacks when you go shopping instead of taking home newspaper or plastic bags. You should use cloth sacks
again and again. You have to save some trees! Shoe boxes and margarine containers can be used to store things
or become fun art projects. Use your imagination!
You can also recycle in your home or even at school. Many communities have recycling centers for
newspapers, batteries and a variety of glass and plastics. These can be made into new products.
Câu 36: What is the most environmentally friendly way to save the Earth?
A. The involvement of people everywhere in this planet.
B. Recycling things in your home or at school.

The best way to improve the four skills: speaking. Irstervng, reading, and writing is to practice

One of the most devastating forces on Earth is a hurricane. A hurricane begins as a tropical storm. The
storm winds blow in circles around a center, called the "eye." Gradually, the winds get stronger and
stronger. A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when the winds are 120 kilometers per hour or more.
The word "hurricane" comes from Huracan, an evil god of a Central American Indian tribe. In other
parts of the world, hurricanes are known by different names. In East Asia, they are usually called
typhoons, from the Chinese tai-feng, meaning "great wind." In Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, and
Australia, they are known as cyclones. Finally, in the Philippines, they are called baguios.
Few things in nature have as much power as hurricanes. They can destroy coastal areas with heavy
rains and winds of 250 kilometers per hour or more. Sometimes a hurricane causes the ocean to flood

One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of clean water.
Having clean drinking water is a basic human right. However, acid rain, industrial pollution and
garbage have made many sources of water undrinkable. Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have
become vast pools of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia is one of the largest lakes in the world. It contains
a rich variety of animals and plants, including 1,300 rare species that do not exist anywhere else in the
world. Yet, they are being destroyed by the massive volumes of industrial effluent which pour into the
lake every day. Even though laws have been made, the government do not have the power to enforce
them. Most industries simply ignore the regulations. The Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the
world's water surface, but it is the dumping ground for 50% of all marine pollution. Almost 16
countries regularly throw industrial wastes a few miles off shore.
Water is free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply of clean water in the world
was limitless. Today, many water supplies have been ruined by pollution and sewage. Clean water is
now scarce, and we are at last beginning to respect this precious source. We should do something now.

Television and Kids
Television is very popular and even has some benefits for kids. It helps very young children learn the
letters of the alphabet, and helps other kids learn about science, cultures, and world events.
However, researchers show that too much TV is bad for children. For one thing, there is a link
between watching more than four hours of TV a day and being overweight. For another thing, many
TV shows are violent and upsetting. Watching these shows may cause kids to be more fearful. And of
course, more time in front of the TV means less time to study. Too much TV may also be the cause of
lower grades. Experts do not agree on the solution to these problems. Some say that kids should watch
only educational programs; others say kids should watch no TV at all. And others suggest teaching
them to watch TV as occasional entertainment, not as an everyday hobby.
36. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Benefits of kids' TV shows B. Effects of television on kids
