How to manage your dark side traits from derailing your career?
Everyone has their own characters but too much of something may backfire.
So overall, this article focuses on the dark-side traits which may ruin the careers.
There are 11 qualities in total, ranging from excitable to dutiful, which can be
divided into three groups - distancing traits, seductive traits, ingratiating traits.
Besides, it also suggests some tips on how to handle them, which includes figuring
out your dark-sides and changing the behaviors. By following the method, you’ll
be able to improve your popularity, your career advancement, and your
management potential.
3. Key answer:
Firstly, if you want to do it by yourself, you can just do some type of test online
about people’ personalities. However, this may only help a bit, so the better way
is to ask your bosses, friends, coworkers and clients to give you honest and critical
feedback on how often you show your dark-sides. But people usually avoid giving
out bad words about one person, especially to their leaders. So, if you want more
accurate information, you must show your welcome to their honest assessments,
and willing to listen carefully for adjusting behaviors.
However, your bosses, friends, coworkers ... are just your work-partner, so
people in your personal life are likely to be more familiar with your dark-sides.
And of course, they are easier to you the truth so you can ask your family as well.
Secondly, it’s also important to identify danger zones. If you we in normal work
situation, it is nothing to say, because we just need to behave as usual. But we are
in hard work situation, the stress will bring out dark-side traits since we have less
self-control. However, even when we are too relaxed, the bad personalities may
come out as well because we simply forget to hide them.
After you identify your dark-sides and danger zones, the next step is pre-empting
your derailleur with behavioral change which means you must change your
behaviors. However, it is not reconstructing your personalities but controlling it in
critical situations.
For example, if you are a reserved person, you may start by speaking up in a
meeting or convey your feedback through others.
And if you are a colorful one which means you like drama and attention, you may
need to avoid chitchatting or hold back from taking the stage during a
presentation so that other co-worker may have the chance of their own.
And to control your dark-site traits long-term, you will need to focus on
reputation management, which means you need to pay attention to the actions
that may harm your reputation, because people see you through your career
advancement. When you show your bad personalities, other people will have
negative thoughts about you and these thoughts may become the barriers to your
career success and good leadership.
Finally, everyone knows that changing your dark-side traits is difficult and takes a
lot of time but if you keep trying and adjusting to critical feedback, you will greatly
enhance your reputation which will boost your career and leadership potential.
