DEMOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF BURDWAN MUNICIPALITY

INTRODUCTION
Demographic pattern and level of urban development are the important two parts of
the history of Burdwan Town. It is known that any urban unit in any spatial region has
always been mirror of the culture of that region and of the people forming them. A
detailed analysis has been made from historical point of view to understand the
infrastructure of Burdwan Town.
DEMOGRAPHIC GROWTH BEFORE 1865
It is well known fact that Burdwan town was ruled by the Rajas (Kings) till 1865 AD
after which it came under the regime of municipal ruling system. Between the years
of 1865-1884 a conflicting issue regarding the Chairmanship of the municipality
came into the profile.
British nomination or the nomination of the Indian candidate - created a major
political turmoil and instability. However the conflicting issue was resolved after 1884
when Roy Nalinakshya Basu Bahadur was elected by the general mass as Chairman
in 1994, on 29th of December.
DEMOGRAPHY
Considerations of graphical representation of decadal growth (change/fluctuation) of
population reveal slow increase of the number of population of Burdwan town for
the first 10 years of the 20th century.
The graph of the next decade brings to the fore the decline of population trend. The
next decadal picture is slow increase in population.
Burdwan fever and floods in Damodar are mainly responsible for negative
growth of population in 1919-1920.
However, after 1931 rapid growth of population becomes evident. This continued
for a long period (upto 1991).
During this period of rapid population growth (1931- 1991) three peaks are found
in the graph. In the decade 1931-41, the growth rate was 59%; in the decade ’51-’61
the growth rate became 44%; in the decade ’81-’91 the growth was 46%.
The year 1931 is therefore regarded as demographic divide.
There are several reasons for this rapid growth of population in this period. Large
scale immigration from surrounding village areas is no doubt an important factor.
Partition of India, too, is a very important factor. It caused large scale immigration
from then East Pakistan.
From 1991 onwards decreasing rate of population trend are found.
Reasons behind them are – development of other nearby cities like Asansol and
Durgapur rural development and resultant lower rate of immigration,
awareness of family planning in rural areas

INCREASE IN DENSITY ZONE

A Ward-wise Analysis:
In analysing the ward-wise pattern of density distribution the intra-urban differences
became prominent since the inception of the municipality especially during the last
four decades. According to the census report of Burdwan, average density of
Burdwan Municipality in 1971 was 6277 persons/sq.km; in 1981 it increased to 7330
persons/sq.km, which in case of 1991 was 7478 persons/sq.km, which reached
about 8729 persons/sq.km, in 2001, which clearly marks an increase of 2452
persons from 1971 to 2001 (28%).
Density Zones
i) Very high density zone with more than 20,000 persons/sq.km.
ii) High density zone of 15,000-20,000 persons/sq.km.
iii) Moderately density zone of 10,000-15,000 persons/sq.km.
iv) Low density zone of 5,000-10,000 persons/sq.km.
v) Very low density zone of less than 5,000 persons/sq.km.

■ Burdwan also represents a very steep density gradient with a central area
density of above 30,000 persons per square kilometre to less than 5,000
persons per square kilometre in the peripheral areas
■ The most prosperous residential area of the town is also located near the city
centre. All these factors together helped to increase the central area density of
the town.
■ On the other hand, areal expansion, reorganization of the municipal
boundary and the development of low-density residential areas by the
immigrants from surrounding rural counterparts have helped the density
gradient to fall sharply towards the peripheral areas

■ Detailed analysis of density gradient for the Burdwan town also highlights that
the gradient of density decline is not uniform in all direction from the central
■ From the density distribution map it can be found that the peripheral density is
very low in the western part thus giving the density decline a steeper
gradient.
■ The western periphery has low density because of the low importance of
urban activities in the area and the institutional use of land (University, Rural
Technology Centre, Eco-park, Science Centre, Water Works etc.).
■ On the other hand, towards the eastern, southern and northern peripheries
the density gradient is gentler as these areas are occupied by residential
housing.
■ Towards the northeast the rate of density decline is very low because of
its busy commercial activities and multi-storied residential uses like housing
colonies of the Railways.

■ Some smaller centres like Golapbag, Nilpur, College more, Sadarghat,

Keshabganj Chatti, Bajepratappur etc. have developed recently in the
outside areas away from the CBD with the physical expansion of the town.
■ The northeastern periphery of the town is densely populated because of
the location of railway station, railway staff colonies and a busy
wholesale market of rice-trading activity.

POPULATION GROWTH PATTERN

INCREASE OF POPULATION

POPULATION DISTRIBUTION
The most remarkable feature of the pattern of population distribution is its
unevenness which is evident from the following table and the appendix. Total
decade- wise and ward-wise population distribution in 1971,1981,1991,2001 are
furnished in appendix (appendix no. 2) both over space and time. Spatial and
temporal analysis of population growth forms an essential part of urban analysis.
peripheral areas (Becharhat, Gopalnagar, Uday Pally, Rathtala, Idelpur, Kamal
Sayer) are sparsely populated due to its remoteness from the CBD zone. The central
part, in spite of low concentration of population is very highly congested due to its
very small areal extension. Previous two Table exhibits the rising trend in both the
number of population and the percentage of population. Population concentration is
declining from the CBD towards the periphery. This phenomenon somewhat follows
the notion of core-periphery decline.

SEX RATIO
SEXWISE POPULATION GROWTH
Male Growth Rate
the gender factor, it is very interesting to note that the rapid growth of male
population is observed in many wards of the town. The following table and appendix
have shown a relation between male population range and frequency of wards.
In case of male population growth rate except a few, every ward has shown an
upward trend. During 1971-81 decade, growth rate was not so high compared to
other 2 decades. During 1971-81, highest growth rate was 168% which was found in
Alamganj area. On the other hand, 7 wards, Kalibazar Court compound area had
less than 100% rate of growth. Besides, most of the wards remained between 100-
150% rate of growth.

Female Growth Rate

Females on the other hand has also shown an upward trend which signifies that the
growth of female population is evident in the town
During the decade of 1971-81, highest growth occurred in Alamganj area where
growth rate is 160%. On the other hand population has decreased in a very few area
mainly in Sadhanpur, Bajepratappur, Badamtala, Court compound area during this
decade which are basically commercial part of the town.
Highest growth rate has occurred in 1981-91 decade, however, seven wards (Ward
No. 1, 6,8,10,23,24 & 25), namelySreepally, Keshabganj Chhati and Udaypalli has
shown a decreasing trend.
