Pipeline Pigs

What is a Pipeline Pig?

A pipeline pig is a maintenance tool used for a wide range of pipeline maintenance applications. Some of these include drying,
cleaning, batching, product removal, liquid displacement, and other more complex pigging solutions. For example, cleaning
pigs are designed to help maintain efficiency and control corrosion. Pipeline pigs for batching help prevent product
contamination and mixing where there are multiple products in the line. Pigs used for displacement are designed to purge air
to prepare for pipeline hydrostatic testing and remove water afterwards. These kinds of pipeline pigs also used to displace
hydrocarbons before repair work and to recover natural gas liquids, along with inhibiting corrosion. Gauging pigs are used
for pipeline inspection, to locate pipeline damage, defects and debris.

Types of Pipeline Pigs

The design and material of the pipeline pig depends on its intended purpose and the type of pipeline. Every pipeline is unique
in its specifications, so there are many types of pipeline pigs that can help achieve the right pigging solution. Below is a
summary of some of the most popular types used across a variety of industries.

Foam Pigs

A popular type of pipeline cleaning device, foam pigs are versatile because they can be used for a variety of applications and
different types of pipelines. They are used for drying, cleaning, batching, and product removal operations. And because they
are lightweight and flexible, foam pipeline pigs are able to negotiate uncommon piping, fittings, and valves. Standard sizes
range from 2″ to 60″, with foam density options including light (1-2 lbs/ft3), medium (5-7 lbs/ft3), and heavy (8-10 lbs/ft3)
density foam. Industries that commonly use foam pipeline pigs are the oil and gas, municipality, food and beverage, mining,
chemical and petrochemical, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.

Bare Foam Pigs

Bare foam pigs are primarily used for drying and sweeping of loose debris, gauging of internal pipe conditions prior to
extensive pigging, sealing behind a stuck pig, batching operations, and product removal. Models are available in light (1-2
lbs/ft3), medium (5-7 lbs/ft3), and heavy (8-10 lbs/ft3) density foam. The pigs are constructed from an open-cell polyurethane
foam with a durable polyurethane elastomer coating on base.

The CYL light-density bare swabs are constructed of light density foam and are NOT coated with polyurethane elastomer on
base as with the LB series. They are primarily used for drying and sweeping of loose debris. However, other functions include
using as a gauging pig for determining internal pipe conditions prior to extensive pigging, using as a sealing pig behind a
stuck pig, using for batching and product removal, as well as, using in concrete pumping trucks between batches.

Standard light density foam is 1.2 lbs/ft3 foam. Various light density foam options are available upon request.

WARNING: This type of pig should NOT be used where extreme low pigging pressures or volumes are present because the
propelling medium may permeate through the foam, rather than push it through the line. Options and other configurations
include bullet nose, double-nose, pulling rope or cable, customized diameters and lengths for special pigging applications.

Coated Foam Pigs

Coated foam pigs are used for regular wiping and general pipeline cleaning. Models are available in light, medium, and heavy
density foam. The pigs are constructed from an open-cell polyurethane foam with a durable polyurethane elastomer coating
in a variety of patterns with criss-cross being the most common.

Brush Foam Pigs

Wirebrush foam pigs are primarily used for cleaning pipelines with buildup, rust, mill scale, or debris in new construction,
and routine maintenance applications. Models are available in light, medium, and heavy density foam. The pigs are
constructed from an open-cell polyurethane foam with a durable polyurethane elastomer coating in a criss-cross pattern and
embedded with wirebrush straps.

Plastic Bristle Foam Pigs

Plastic bristle foam pigs are used for cleaning plastic pipes (PVC, fiberglass, HDPE) as well as internally coated steel pipe.
The bristles are aggressive enough to clean most buildups, but not harmful to the pipe’s integrity. Models are available in
light, medium, and heavy density foam. The pigs are constructed from an open-cell polyurethane foam with a durable
polyurethane elastomer coating in a criss-cross pattern and embedded with plastic bristle straps.

Silicon Carbide Foam Pigs

Silicon carbide foam pigs are used for cleaning lines with high-level hardness buildup as well as rust and mill scale. The
abrasive compound can be in loose grit form or in a heavy-duty strap. Models are available in light, medium, and heavy
density foam. The pigs are constructed from an open-cell polyurethane foam with a durable polyurethane elastomer coating
in a criss-cross pattern and silicon carbide material in loose grit or strap form.
Foam Spheres

Foam spheres are available in various styles as with foam pigs, including bare, criss-cross, silicon-carbide, wirebrush, and
plastic bristle. They are used for the same applications as standard foam pigs, however, they are able to negotiate some piping
configurations that standard foam pigs cannot. Spheres can also be magazine loaded in specially designed sphere launchers
for automated mechanical launching.

Note:If you are familiar with using a particular style of foam sphere or you have used a foam sphere before, please feel free
to place an order. If you have never used a foam sphere or are unsure if a foam sphere is the best pig for your application,
please contact us to discuss in more detail. Due to their spherical design, spheres only contact the pipe with a minimal amount
of their sealing surface (approximately 15% of their diameter). This is compared to standard cylindrical pigs which are in
contact with the pipe for their entire sealing length (approximately 1-1/2 times the diameter). Because of this design
characteristic, spheres are more prone to losing seal while negotiating various piping configurations (i.e. elbows, tees, wyes,
etc.), than standard cylindrical pigs.

Foam Disc Pigs

The FDP series of foam disc pigs are an excellent pig for all types of batching and product removal applications. Models are
available in medium and heavy density foam. The unique design offers multiple discs for unsurpassed sealing capabilities.
Alternate variations of this pig include rear sealing cup, as well as special lengths and diameters for unique applications,
including dual-diameter.

Special Design Foam Pigs

For high-performance applications or unique-capability requirements, specially designed foam pigs are available for all types
of pigging projects. Whether the below can solve the need or if a new pig needs to be designed, Pigs Unlimited International,
Inc. is ready to tackle the challenge.

STUD PIGS

Our "Stud" or Decoking Pig removes the hardest coke and encrustations from the pipe making it a great choice for pipeline
cleaning. The tungsten steel studs scrape or break the coke layers loose while the water flows around the pig to create a low /
high pressure turbulence. This action flushes loosened deposits from the cleaning studs ahead of the pig.
Solid Cast Pipeline Pigs

Solid-cast pigs can be a good choice when an increased level of ruggedness and sealing capabilities are needed. These pipeline
pigs have the same flexibility and handling advantage of foam pigs. The cups and discs found on steel pigs that are designed
well can offer excellent sealing which makes these pigs very efficient as general purpose pipeline pigs for batching,
displacement, and routine pigging operations. With the addition of brushes, they can also be used for pipeline cleaning
applications. Various configurations are available, including spherical, cup-type, disc-type, and combination cup-and-disc
type.

Process Pigs

Process pigs are designed for use in multi-product piping applications. The industries utilizing these pigs include chemical
and petrochemical, ink and paint, food and beverage, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. The process pigs are intended
for use in packing, storage, and loading/unloading lines. The unique designs of the process pigs minimize bypass, thereby
minimizing cross-contamination and normally wasted product. For more information regarding this type of pig and its unique
closed-loop pigging method, view the animated presentation found in “The Process Pigging System” link located below.

The ARG was designed to be primarily used in conjunction with Pigging Valves, however, it can be used in any process
pigging application. The cup-and-disc combination make it an excellent sealing pig with a short overall length for use with
Pigging Valves.

The PDP pig rivals other process pig designs because of its TWELVE sealing discs — more than any other pig on the market.
The additional discs add increased sealing capabilities resulting in less bypass and more product displacement. The PDP is
capable of spanning full-branch tees and negotiating tight-radius bends as low as 1.5-diameter. It is also equipped with a
unique nose for easy removal from process pigging stations. It is constructed of high-grade abrasion and chemical resistant
solid-cast polyurethane material. Options include varying durometers (hardness) and customized configurations and
dimensions for special pigging applications.

The SWP style was the first pig designed for process pigging. Its eight discs equate to exceptional sealing capabilities
resulting in less bypass and more product displacement. The SWP is capable of spanning full-branch tees and negotiating
tight-radius bends as low as 1.5-diameter. It is constructed of high-grade abrasion and chemical resistant solid-cast
polyurethane material. Material options include neoprene, viton, and epdm.
The SWP-F pig is the same design as the SWP but the construction material is of food-grade quality polyurethane primarily
used in the food & beverage and cosmetic & pharmaceutical industries. Its eight discs equate to exceptional sealing capabilities
resulting in less bypass and more product displacement. The SWPF is capable of spanning full-branch tees and negotiating
tight-radius bends as low as 1.5-diameter.

The VPR pig is a design variation of the common and industry-proven SWP pig. Four of the original eight discs were removed
and the remaining four discs were slightly thickened. This equates to less frictional drag, but still offers exceptional sealing
capabilities. Material options include neoprene, viton, and epdm.

Solid-Cast Utility Pigs

The one-piece design utility series of solid-cast pigs are primarily used for product removal, batching, hydrostatic testing, and
removal of paraffin, debris, or other buildup. Because they are lighter in weight than conventional steel pigs, these utility pigs
are capable of making longer and more efficient runs. They are able to negotiate tight-radius bends as well as varying internal
diameters of the nominal same size pipe. Various cup and disc configurations are available and can be adapted to
accommodate brushes for cleaning applications.

The UFCP solid-cast pig is constructed of high-grade abrasion and chemical resistant solid-cast polyurethane material. It is
capable of negotiating tight-radius bends as well as varying internal diameters of nominal pipe. The design of the cups allow
the pressure of the line to seat the outer sealing surface of the cup against the internal pipe surface to ensure positive seal.
Primarily used for product removal, batching, hydrostatic testing, and paraffin, debris or other buildup removal. Because they
are lighter in weight than steel-mandrel pigs, this allows for longer and more efficient runs. Options include cup or cup-and-
disc configurations, varying durometers (hardness), transmitter or pinger housing, and magnets.

The UFCP-W solid-cast pig is constructed of high-grade abrasion and chemical resistant solid-cast polyurethane material,
and is equipped with coarse wrap-a-round brushes for cleaning operations. It is capable of negotiating tight-radius bends as
well as varying internal diameters of nominal pipe. The design of the cups allow the pressure of the line to seat the outer
sealing surface of the cup against the internal pipe surface to ensure positive seal. Primarily used for product removal,
batching, hydrostatic testing, and paraffin, debris or other buildup removal. Because they are lighter in weight than steel-
mandrel pigs, this allows for longer and more efficient runs. Options include cup or cup-and-disc configurations, varying
durometers (hardness), transmitter or pinger housing, and magnets.

SOLID CAST URETHANE CUP DISC COMBO PIG UFDCP

It is solid-cast in one piece and is made of 100% polyurethane. The front cup allows for easy launching (even in low pressure
systems) and the rear cup acts as the main seal to propel the pig down the line. The middle discs are additional seal and contact
points to ensure maximum cleaning and scraping action, as well as to remove as much fluid as possible.

Multiple sealing points and moderate length make this model excellent for passing through pipeline fittings such as check
valves, y-laterals, and tees. It is also flexible and can negotiate most tight radius bends and minor pipeline deformities.

The UFDP solid-cast pig is constructed of high-grade abrasion and chemical resistant solid-cast polyurethane material. It is
capable of negotiating tight-radius bends as well as varying internal diameters of nominal pipe. The design of the discs allow
the pressure of the line to seat the outer sealing surface of the disc against the internal pipe surface to ensure positive seal.

The UFDPSE solid-cast pig is a brand new design that was developed by Pigs Unlimited. The pig is constructed of high-
grade abrasion and chemical resistant solid-cast polyurethane material. It is capable of negotiating tight-radius bends as well
as varying internal diameters of nominal pipe. What sets this pig apart from others on the market is the square edge design of
the discs. We have combined the cleaning power of a square edge disc with the flexibility and functionality of a solid-cast
pig. The multiple sealing surfaces provide an optimal seal and the square edge design provides reliable cleaning performance.
Primarily used for product removal, batching, hydrostatic testing, and paraffin, debris or other buildup removal. Because they
are lighter in weight than steel-mandrel pigs, this allows for longer and more efficient runs. Options include varying
durometers (hardness), transmitter or pinger cavity, and magnets.

The 4-Cup solid-cast pig is constructed of high-grade abrasion and chemical resistant solid-cast polyurethane material. It is
capable of negotiating tight-radius bends as well as varying internal diameters of nominal pipe. The design of the cups allow
the pressure of the line to seat the outer sealing surface of the cup against the internal pipe surface to ensure positive seal.

Urethane Spheres

Spheres are primarily used for meter proving in the oil and gas industry, but can also be used for hydrostatic testing, batching,
and product removal. The unique aspect with spheres is their ability to negotiate tight-radius bends and magazine loading in
specially designed sphere launchers for automated mechanical launching. Depending on the size, they are available in solid
and inflatable type designs.

Steel Mandrel Pigs

Steel pipeline pigs are perfect for long-term use. They have a long-life and can be maintained easily, being ready to serve in
any application where a pipeline pig is needed. They are made with a steel mandrel body that has parts that can be replaced
like cups and discs. These pigs can also be equipped with various brushes (spring-loaded, circular, wrap-around) for removing
deposits on the interior pipeline wall. Standard configurations include cup, disc, multi-disc, conical cup, and various
combinations. Various options are also available, such as adding or substituting a cup or disc, special lengths and diameters,
gauging plates, articulated joints, transmitter cavities, and magnet packs. The advantage of steel pipeline pigs is the ability to
replace the wearing components (cups, discs, brushes, etc.), thereby rendering it a new pig which can make them a cost-
effective choice for long-term pipeline maintenance operations.
