CHAPTER III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The first problem considered in this study dealt on thefeelings of students who belong

in a group.

The Feeling of a Student Who Belong in a Group

Sense of Belongingness

A student feel the sense of belongingness if peer accepted them in a group. Those who

belong in a group feel happy and comfortable because they have friends which can be their

companion in everything. Moreover, through the presence of peers in life, an individual does

not feel lonely and they have that feeling of security where members feel included, accepted,

related, fit in, conformed and subscribed, which enhances their well-being with the feeling of

home.

“It felt flattering because they welcomed me in their group” (Eva)

“I'm so happy because they're always there for me” (Celine)

“I'm comfortable with them, I'm so happy that’s why sometimes I forget my

problems” (Sena)

“I'm happy because I never been felt that I'm alone, and I know that my friends are

ready to listen about my problems” (Anna)

“I feel happy because they are my friends” (Cole)

Sense of Togetherness

Through the presence of peers, they can present themselves comfortably without

being judge. The daily interaction of peers made its members to feel at ease and with that
they can freely voice out their ideas, rants and opinions. Also, they can act different from the

normal context such as laughing hard, making noise and being shameless without hesitation

whenever they are with their peers just like what the respondents answered. Moreover

through the sense of togetherness, a feeling of importance is garnered which brings out the

commitment to be together until the end of time.

Roles of Peers in an Student’s Life

Source of Motivation

A student is motivated because their peers encourage them to do better. One

respondent said, “ There is big impact of friends to me especially on academics because they

bring out the best in me”. Most of them said that their friends serve as their motivation and

drive to success. According to a respondent, “They serve as my motivation and inspiration.

They push each other to do the right thing”. The other respondent said “I consider them as

my inspiration because they are the reason I am happy, especially because I can feel that they

are my true friends.”while the other said, “They motivate me, for example there is an up

coming summative test and I don’t want to review my notes, they will tell and encourage me

to review”and lastly a respondent stated that, “I consider them as my inspiration because

there times when I feel challenged to have high score like them…”. A student surrounded by

peers is motivated to do their best in everything they do especially in academics. Moreover,

with the motivation friends render to an individual he/she can perform or excel in the path

they are taking.

The finding corroborates with the study of Finn and Zimmer (2012). They stated that

when students are academically motivated they like to enjoy learning in school, persist in

academic tasks, participate in school activities, and believes that school is important. Being
motivated by peers when we experience struggles in school may lead us to have a better

performance. Being motivated by peers, the very people you see yourself in, is an extremely

valuable experience. The ability to witness and hear the things they are doing to revolutionise

their communities; being able to share ideas discuss and brainstorm in the future, it

sometimes that should be an integral part of every youth’s life ( Faber, n.d.). having peers that

supports and helps might have a big impact on students performance. The support that peers

give and show are important for the student to be abale to do task that are assigned. Since

peers are always there, they have a big impact not just on academics but also in behaviour

Agent of Development

An individual’s peer group serve as an Agent ofDevelopment. One of the respondents

stated, “They are the one giving me guidance and also they enlighten me to do best in my

studies. They are also helping me to have a higher grade.” While the other respondent said

that “they affect my perception in studying because we all have goals. We help each other to

be better and so that we can achieve our goals.” The peer of students affects their decision in

life especially in academics by helping each other to be a good student so that they will reach

their ambition in life. They never let someone in the group be left behind. As a result they

help each other by doing everything they can just to cope together. According to Kathryn

(2010), a peer on academic performance refers to excellence in all academic discipline, in a

class as well as extracurricular activities. It includes the guide of excellence in sporting

behavior, confidence communication skills, and others.

In line with this study, adolescents that conform to the rules established by the

significant others like behavior which eventually enhances his or her academic

performance(Lahmers, 2003).
A student is motivated because of their peers encourage them to do better. The

respondent said “ there is big impact of friends to me specially on academics because they

bring out the best of me”. Most of them said that “They serves as my motivation and

inspiration. ” They push each other to do the right thing. The other respondent said “ I

consider them as my inspiration because they are the reason I am happy, specially because I

can feel that they are my true friends.”, ”They motivate me, for example there is an up

coming summative test and I don’t want to review my notes, they will tell and encourage me

to review” And lastly “ I consider them as my inspiration because there times where I feel

challenged to have high score like them…” Students who has peers to support and motivate

them by telling and showing someone that they can do better can affect theirperformances

academically or not.

The finding corroborates with the study of Finn and Zimmer (2012). They stated that

when students are academically motivated they like to enjoy learning in school, persist in

academic tasks, participate in school activities, and believes that school is important. Being
