Course Title: INTRODUCTION TO BIOLOGY

Course Code:

Credit Units: 03

Course Objectives:
The objective of this course is to give students an understanding of the very basic
molecules of life-DNA,RNA, proteins and how these molecules, when form further
complex molecules like carbohydrates, vitamins and lipids, then functioning of body
takes place. Since technology is advancing in every field, emphasis is also given on the
understanding of application of some biotechnological concepts used in our daily life like
biofuels, biofertilizers.

Pre-requisites:
Basic knowledge of biology

Student Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the course the student will be able to:

 Define and explain phylogenetic tree, have a basic understanding of the biological
mechanisms by which they are created.

 Identify and classify the biological organisms.

 discuss the biological structures and purposes of basic components of prokaryotic

and eukaryotic cells, especially macromolecules, membranes, and organelles.

 apply and describe the applications of biology.

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:

The course pedagogy will include lectures, discussion on applications of the topics
covered.
