    Pāli text in roman script This is what ought to be done by one skilled in the
    good
    Karanīyam atthakusalena Having understood the path to peace
    yan taṃ santaṃ padaṃ abhisamecca: Able, straight forward and straight up,
    Sakko ujū ca sūjū ca polite, they should be mild and not arrogant
    suvaco c'assa mudu anatimānī,
    Contented and frugal,
    Santussako ca subharo ca with few responsibilities and easy going,
    appakicco ca sallahukavutti grounded, and not impulsive;
    Santidriyo ca nipako ca not chasing status
    appagabbho kulesu ananugiddho,
    And not doing the slightest thing
    Na ca khuddaṃ samācare kiñci which is denounced by the Wise in others
    yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṃ May they have happiness and peace;
    Sukhino vā khemino hontu May all beings be happy in themselves
    sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā:
    Whatever living beings there are
    Ye keci pāṇabhūt' atthi fearful or fearless – without remainder
    tasā vā thāvarā vā anavasesā Huge, large,
    Dīgha vā ye mahantā vā medium, small. Fine or coarse.
    majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā
    Seen or unseen,
    Diṭṭhā vā ye vā addiṭṭhā Remote or living nearby,
    ye ca dūre vasanti avidūre Born or seeking birth:
    Bhūtā vā sambhavesī vā May all beings be happy in themselves
    sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā
    Not humiliating,or despising
    Na paro paraṃ nikubbetha anyone anywhere
    nâtimaññetha katthacinaṃ kañci Though anger or experiencing repugnance:
    Vyārosanā paṭighasaññā [they] should not wish suffering for another.
    nāññamaññassa dukkham iccheyya
    Like a mother’s own child,
    Mātā yathā niyaṃ puttaṃ [she will] protect that only child with her life
    āyusā ekaputtam anurakkhe Thus for all beings should
    Evam pi sabbabhūtesu the heart become infinite
    mānasam bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ
    And friendliness for all the world,
    Mettañ ca sabbalokasmiṃ [should] the heart become infinite
    mānasam bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ In all the directions of space,
    Uddhaṃ adho ca tiriyañ ca unobstructed, peaceable, without enmity
    asambādhaṃ averaṃ asapattaṃ
    Standing, walking, sitting
    Tiṭṭhaṃ caraṃ nisinno vā or lying down, As far as possible without
    sayāno vā yāvat' assa vigatamiddho sluggishness
    Etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya This mindfulness should be undertaken;
    brahmam etaṃ vihāraṃ idha-m-ahu [It is like] dwelling with god here and now
    Diṭṭiñ ca anupagamma Not falling into views,
    sīlavā dassanena sampanno ethical and with perfect vision
    Kāmesu vineyya gedhaṃ Having given up greed for sensory pleasures,
    na hi jātu gabbhaseyyaṃ punar etī ti freed without doubt from birth.
