My essay will attempt to determine whether there is a connection between organic foods
and an individual's health. Is there a significant difference in organic and inorganic food? How
does organic foods influence human health? Also, what makes something considered to be
organic?

and How to Keep it Affordable.” Organic Foods: What You Need to Know. September

Jeanne Segal, PhD, and others concluded that eating organic food has many mental,
emotional and environment effects. Results of a 2016 European Study show that organic meat
and milk are richer in certain nutrients. The study results included that omega-3 fatty acids, were
up to 50% higher in organic meat and milk than in conventionally raised versions. Benefits of
organic foods include fewer pesticides, more fresh, and GMO free. The author explains the
differences between organic and non organic foods, explains the labels on organic foods and
what they mean, and explains the many benefits of eating organic foods. I will use this source in
eating organic foods. Studies prove that the herbicide roundup has been classified as “probable
human carcinogen,” this insecticide has resulted in developmental delays in infants. A 2014
study shown in British Journal Nutrition states that crops that are organically grown and
fertilized different are 48% less likely to test for cadmium, which is a toxic metal that collects in
one’s liver and kidney. Rolf Halden, professor and director of the Biodesign Center for
Environmental Security at Arizona State University stated that the synthetic growth hormones
injected into the animals can be consumed by humans. Also, organic meat and dairy are not
allowed to be in possession of synthetic growth hormones which are connected to cancer. I will
use this source in my paper to state the 4 science backed health benefits to the human body.

In this article the Mayo Clinic explains organic farming, organic labels, the meaning of
organic, the benefits of organic foods and food safety tips. The Mayo Clinic states that
non-organic foods contain bacteria that can be given to humans when they eat that food. They
state materials that are not allowed when doing organic farming which include: synthetic
fertilizers, sewage sludge, most synthetic pesticides, or antibiotics. They give tips when buying
food which include: select a variety of foods from different sources, buy fruits and vegetables
when they are in season, read food labels carefully, and clean fruits and vegetables thoroughly
before eating them. I will use this source in my paper to explain the meaning of organic foods,
the limits on materials they can use, and food tips when buying organic foods.

“What Does Organic Mean, and Should You Buy Organic Foods?” Youtube, uploaded by
In this video Scishow states that organic foods have to meet regulations on how they are
produced. Organic means a legal term for marketing purposes. They state that farmers have to
rotate their crops, which means growing different plants on the same plot of land throughout the
year. For meat and dairy to be considered organic, the animals must be fed organic feed. Cows
and other ruminants have to graze for ⅓ of the year, and pigs and chickens have to be able to go
outside. Manure is less dangerous to the environment because it takes a lot of energy to make
chemical fertilizers. Research shows that organic farming supports more biodiversity. One
disadvantage to organic farming is that it takes 25% more land to grow organic foods than it does
to grow regular foods. I will use this source in my paper to explain the regulations for organic
Rabin, Roni Caryn. “Can Eating Organic Food Lower Your Cancer Risk.” The New York Times,
In the New York Times, they in a study, those who ate more organic produce, dairy,
meat, and other products had 25% lower chances to get cancer. The demand for organic foods
have increased and sales of organic foods have increased $45.2 billion from last year. A french
study proved that people who consume organic foods have 76 percent fewer lymphomas, and a
34 percent reduction in breast cancer. I will include this source in my paper to record the studies
that prove that organic foods increase your health and reduce the chances of cancer.
On this website there are many different tabs about organic. This source talks about how
organic food is grown, how organic food is processed, organic for your home and body, organic
standards, organic verification and certification, labeling organic products, the value of organic,
health benefits of organic, environmental benefits of organic, and organic and GMO’s. The
organic trade association states that organic foods are grown with strict governmental rules and
they must be grown without toxins, pesticides, synthetic hormones or genetic engineering. For a
product to become certified as organic is a multi step, hard process. Minor non- organic foods
can be used if they are on the “National List” that has been approved and evaluated for safety
and their impact on both human and environmental health. These ingredients must make up 5%
or less of the total ingredients used to make organic food due by the law. Organic products
reduce health risks to farmers, consumers and the environment by the minimal toxins and
chemicals being released. I will use this source in my paper to show environmental factors of
Greger, Michael. “Are Organic Foods More Nutritious?” Nutritional Facts, April 29,
2015.nutritionfacts.org/video/are-organic-foods-more-nutritious/
M.D, Michael Greger concluded fruits such as strawberries, have longer shelf life, higher
antioxidant activity and concentrations of ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds. Organic
strawberries were represented to be more sweet, better flavored, and better appearance. Greger
also concluded that extracts from organically grown strawberries inhibited cancer cell
proliferation of both HT29 and MCF-7 to a significantly higher extent. Greger concluded organic
foods to be 20-40% healthier than conventionally grown foods. I will use this information in my
source to show how organic foods decrease the chances of cancer in the human brain cells.
