7. Contract description:
The overall project objective is to promote socio-economic development and to facilitate international trade
thereby boosting regional integration. The Kampala northern bypass (KNB) is part of the northern corridor route
that links Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda to Mombasa.
The specific objective is to relieve congestion and reduce travel time and vehicle operating costs for local and
through traffic, and to protect Kampala city roads from damage by heavy commercial trucks. Additionally specific
capacity constraints (traffic volumes etc.), and road safety issues that have emerged since the opening the
newly constructed first phase of the Kampala northern bypass are to be addressed.
The expected results will be achieved by providing 2 additional lanes along sections that are presently single, 2-
lane carriageways, improving capacity of roundabouts and providing grade-separated intersections, pedestrian
walkways and footbridges.
Overall the project implementation has been subdivided into 6 parts as indicated below:

1. Busega to Sentema; 2 850 m; 45 299; 100 asphalt, 270 bituminous base, 400 lime-treated material.
2. Sentema to Hoima; 2 350 m; 51 338; 100 asphalt, 280 bituminous base, 400 lime-treated material.
3. Gayaza to Kyebando, 2 100 m; 65 643.
4. Kyebando to Ntinda; 2 500 m; 81 016; 100 asphalt, 290 bituminous base, 400 lime-treated material.
5. Ntinda to Naalya; 3 650 m; 43 976; 100 asphalt, 250 bituminous base, 400 lime-treated material.
6. Naalya to Jinja; 3 900 m; 31 245.
