Conceptual Framework
The study aims to assess the knowledge and practice of high school children on
prevention of malaria in a selected rural school at Mangalore. The conceptual framework for
the present study was developed on the basis of Pender’s Health Promotion Model (1996).
The model is based on four factors.
The researcher in this study has considered that the individual characteristics are
influenced by certain modifying factors such as knowledge, unawareness, ignorance and
traditional practice and non modifying factors such as age, gender, educational status of
parents, economic status and source of information.
The researcher in this study has considered that each student has certain perceptions
regarding prevention of malaria, which is influenced by certain factors such as mass media
campaigns, advice from others, health teaching and also there may be barriers in the
perception which is influenced by factors such as unawareness, family practices etc.
In this study, the researcher is expected to assess the knowledge and practice of high
school children on prevention of malaria by using closed ended structured questionnaire and
rating scale, which includes the areas such as etiology of malaria, signs and symptoms,
diagnostic measures, treatment, complications and control measures of malaria. The health
education pamphlet on prevention of malaria is developed and distributed among the high
school children after assessment in order to improve their knowledge and practice on
prevention of malaria.
In the present study, the level of knowledge and practice are assessed and
categorized in to three groups such as good, average and poor and health education pamphlet
is distributed among high school children who are in average and poor group in order to
improve their further knowledge and practice on prevention of malaria.
