CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Nursing science is deeply involved in the body of knowledge essential to nursing

research and practice. Identification of this knowledge base requires the development and
recognition of concepts and theories specific to nursing. Theory is defined as an integrated set
of defined concepts and statements that present a view of phenomenon and can be used to
describe, explain, predict and control that phenomenon. A concept is defined as a complex
mental framework of an object, property or event that is derived from individual perception
and experience. It influences nursing most significantly and determines its practice.

Conceptualization is a process of forming ideas, which utilize and form a

conceptual framework for a particular study. It is the abstract logical structure (framework)
which enables the researcher to link the findings to nursing’s body of knowledge. Conceptual
framework refers to inter- related concepts or abstractions that are assembled together in
some rational scheme by virtue of their relevance to a common theme. Each conceptual
framework proposes a different view of the metparadigm concepts, which provides clear
description of variables, suggesting ways or methods to conduct the study and guiding the
interpretation and integration of the significant findings.

The study aims to assess the knowledge and practice of high school children on
prevention of malaria in a selected rural school at Mangalore. The conceptual framework for
the present study was developed on the basis of Pender’s Health Promotion Model (1996).
The model is based on four factors.

1. Individual characteristics: The importance of individual’s unique characteristics and

experiences will depend on the target behavior for health promotion. Some characteristics can
influence health behaviors include experience, knowledge and skill in healthy promotion
behavior and received a positive benefit, as a result will engage in future health promoting
behaviors.

The researcher in this study has considered that the individual characteristics are
influenced by certain modifying factors such as knowledge, unawareness, ignorance and
traditional practice and non modifying factors such as age, gender, educational status of
parents, economic status and source of information.

2. Cognitive perceptual factors: Cognitive perceptual factors constitute a critical core

for interventions because they can be modified through nursing care. This set of variables is
considered to be of major motivational significance for acquiring and maintaining health
promotion behaviors. This includes the perceived barriers to action, perceived self
efficiency, interpersonal influences etc.

The researcher in this study has considered that each student has certain perceptions
regarding prevention of malaria, which is influenced by certain factors such as mass media
campaigns, advice from others, health teaching and also there may be barriers in the
perception which is influenced by factors such as unawareness, family practices etc.

3. Likelihood of action: Likelihood of action involves commitment and identifying

specific strategies for carrying out and reinforcing the behavior.

In this study, the researcher is expected to assess the knowledge and practice of high
school children on prevention of malaria by using closed ended structured questionnaire and
rating scale, which includes the areas such as etiology of malaria, signs and symptoms,
diagnostic measures, treatment, complications and control measures of malaria. The health
education pamphlet on prevention of malaria is developed and distributed among the high
school children after assessment in order to improve their knowledge and practice on
prevention of malaria.

4. Behavioral outcome: Health promoting behavior, the outcome of health promotion

model is directed towards attaining positive health outcomes for the client.

In the present study, the level of knowledge and practice are assessed and
categorized in to three groups such as good, average and poor and health education pamphlet
is distributed among high school children who are in average and poor group in order to
improve their further knowledge and practice on prevention of malaria.
