ENGINE COMPRESSION
Check compression pressure with engine at normal operating
temperature. Unplug distributor and ignition coil. If equipped, unplug
cold start injector connector, solenoid resistor, and fuel injector
connectors. Remove all spark plugs, hold throttle valve wide open, and
operate engine at cranking speed.

VALVE CLEARANCE
NOTE: Van models are equipped with hydraulic lifters. No
adjustment is necessary.
6) Press valve lifter downward using SST (A) and install SST
(B) between camshaft and valve lifter and remove SST (A) See Fig. 2.
Using a small screwdriver, remove adjustment shim.
7) Using a micrometer, measure thickness of shim just
removed. Select a new shim that will give correct valve clearance. See
VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table in this article. Shims are
available in thickness from .0787" (2.000 mm) to .1299" (3.300 mm) for
Celica 3S-GE and 3S-GTE models or .0984" (2.500 mm) to .1299" (3.300
mm) for all other models in .002" (.05 mm) increments.
8) Install proper thickness shim. Using SST (A), press
downward on valve lifter and remove SST (B). Recheck valve clearance.
Install remaining components.
IGNITION TIMING
CAUTION: Some tachometers may not be compatible with ignition
system. Consult tachometer manufacturer before connecting
tachometer to system. DO NOT allow tachometer terminal to
become grounded or damage to ignitor and/or coil may exist.
NOTE: Adjust idle speed with air cleaner installed, all air intake
system hoses and vacuum lines connected, EFI system wiring
connectors tight, transmission/transaxle in Neutral, all
accessories and cooling fan off (if equipped) and engine at
normal operating temperature.
CELICA (3S-GE)
1) Install tachometer to proper terminals. See Fig. 5. Start
and operate engine at 2500 RPM for approximately 2 minutes. Allow
engine to idle and pinch the No. 1 vacuum hose of air intake chamber
closed. See Fig. 19. Note if idle speed is within specification. See
IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table in this article.
2) If idle speed requires adjustment, remove rubber boot from
top of throttle body. See Fig. 18. Adjust idle speed adjusting screw
to obtain correct idle speed. Remove tachometer.
CELICA (3S-GTE)
1) Install tachometer to proper terminals. See Fig. 5.
Disconnect Idle Speed Control (ISC) valve connector at throttle body.
See Fig. 20.
2) Start and operate engine. Idle speed should exceed 1000
RPM. Reinstall ISC valve connector. Note if idle speed is within
specification. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table. If idle speed is
not within specification, check the ISC valve, wiring and ECU. See
IDLE SPEED CONTROL (ISC) SYSTEM under I - SYS/COMP TESTS in this
section. Remove tachometer.

VAN
1) Install tachometer to proper terminals. See Fig. 8.
Disconnect Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) connector for the idle speed
control valve. See Fig. 21.
2) Start and operate engine at 2500 RPM for approximately 2
minutes. Note if idle speed is within specification. See IDLE SPEED
SPECIFICATIONS table.
3) If not within specification, rotate idle speed adjusting
screw to obtain an correct idle speed. Remove tachometer.
ALL OTHERS
1) Install tachometer to proper terminals. See Figs. 3 - 9.
Start and operate engine at 2500 RPM for approximately 2 minutes. Note
if idle speed is within specification. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS
table in this article.
2) If idle speed requires adjustment, adjust idle speed
adjusting screw to obtain an correct idle speed. Remove tachometer.
IDLE MIXTURE
NOTE: Idle mixture must be checked with air cleaner installed, all
air intake system hoses and vacuum lines connected, EFI
system wiring connectors tight, transmission/transaxle in
Neutral, all accessories and cooling fan off (if equipped)
and engine at normal operating temperature.
