Name of Instant Activity: Musical Fitness Dots

Grade Level: Grade 3-5

Purpose: To practice locomotor movements while implementing spacial awareness. The

heartrate will go up and the body should be warm.

Rules/Instructions:
Gymnasium Set-up: (prior to introducing yourself)
1. Create play space for game:
-Use 4 medium- or large-sized cones
-Make a rectangle play space approximately 20 yards by 35 yards
-Place square/rectangle in middle of gym so if a student accidently runs out of
bounds, they do not run into wall or equipment around perimeter of gymnasium
2. Safety:
-Take care of yourself
-Look out for others when moving around

Rules: (In order I plan to tell them to the class)

1. This game is called “Musical Fitness Dots”
2. In this game, everyone will move around (inside the boundary) performing a certain
locomotor movement stated by the teacher (while music is playing)
3. When the music stops, the students will stop and find the closest poly-spot
4. Depending on the color, the student will perform different activities (purple- 5
pushups, orange- 10 crunches, yellow- 5 supermans, red- 10 squats)
5. This will be repeated about 5 times

Equipment/materials: (For class of 24 students)

-4 medium- or large-sized cones
-6 purple poly-spots
-6 yellow poly-spots
-6 red poly-spots
-6 orange poly-spots
-poster paper showing different exercises and reps depending on color of poly-spot

Safety:
-Cone off all unsafe equipment that cannot be moved
-Observe students throughout each round of play to make sure they (a) stay inside boundaries
and (b) perform locomotor movements and exercises correctly

1
Alternatives:
Alternative #1: Take out a poly-spot each time so that the game is more competitive

Alternative #2: Make the boundaries larger so that there is more room to move around and the
students may have to run farther to get to a poly-spot

Transitions:
(a) Getting Started: (Transition to instant activity from meeting area where we drop off our
personal items such as bags, coats, etc.)
a. Call students into a meeting area (circle-up)
b. Introduce yourself (Hello class, my name is Megan; you can call me Ms. Hart)
c. Tell name of activity and rules; begin play (Today we will play “Musical Fitness
Dots” see rules)

(b) Wrapping Up:

a. Call students in and discuss whether or not they liked the activity, if they feel
warmed up, and if they think anything should be changed.
b. Turn it over to Dr. Blackshear
