THE POWER OF THE CROSS
OPENING PRAYER
Officiant: Let us pray
Almighty and eternal God, the strength of those who believe and the hope of
those who doubt, may we, who have not seen, have faith and receive the
fullness of Christ's blessing, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
People: Amen.
Holy and eternal God, whose glory cherubim and seraphim and all the hosts
of heaven proclaim: Sanctify and bless, we pray, the music of our worship
and all who make it. Grant that the service that we offer here may reflect
your eternal glory which we share with all your saints in light. Amen.
People: Amen.
Officiant: As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass
against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For
thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
WELCOME
When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
See from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled
down.
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet or thorns compose so rich a
crown.
3
HYMN BENEATH THE CROSS OF JESUS
Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand;
The shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land,
A home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way,
From the burden of the noontide heat and the burden of the day.
I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of His face,
Content to let the world go by, to know no gain or loss,
My sinful self my only shame my glory all, the cross.
NARRATION HOSANNA
4
You feed and sustain us; by your word we are fed.
One perfect off’ring, given for all: You are the bread of life. Refrain
We remember your sacrifice as we drink this wine,
Your blood sealed the covenant with God for all time.
One perfect off’ring, given for all: by your death we are raised to new
life. Refrain
5
HYMN MAN OF SORROWS
Man of sorrows, wrapt in grief, bow thine ear to our relief,
Thou for us the path has trod of the righteous wrath of God,
Thou the cup of fire has drained till its light alone remained,
Lamb of love! We look to thee: hear our mournful litany.
By the garden fraught with woe, whither thou full oft would go;
By thine agony of prayer in the desolation there;
By the dire and deep distress of that myst’ry fathomless;
Lord, our tears in mercy see: hearken to our litany.
Your only Son, no sin to hide, but you have sent Him from your side
To walk upon this guilty sod and to become the Lamb of God.
Refrain: O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God; I love the holy Lamb of
God.
O wash me in His precious blood, my Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
Your gift of love they crucified, they laughed and scorned Him as He
died;
The humble King they named a fraud and sacrificed the Lamb of God.
Refrain
I was so lost I should have died, but you have brought me to your side
To be led by your staff and rod, and to be called a Lamb of God.
Refrain
NARRATION PIETA
6
How can this be? Why must this be?
I will hold a baby boy; He’ll embrace the world.
I will shield you from the bitter cold. I will keep you from the
fright’ning noise.
I’ll protect you from the pain and hurt. I will hold you when you are
alone.
You tried to teach them, and they silenced your voice.
You reached out to touch them, and they pierced your hand.
You came to love them, and they broke your heart.
O Lord Jehovah, behold your Son! See what the hatred of mankind
has done!
I could not shield you from the coldness of men’s hearts.
I could not keep you from the noise of human rage.
I couldn’t protect you from the pain of nails and thorns,
From this journey towards death that you have walked ev’ry day since
you were born.
All I can do now is to hold you, love you, my Son.
O to see the dawn of the darkest day; Christ on the road to Calvary.
Tried by sinful men, torn and beaten, then nailed to a cross of wood.
Refrain: This the pow’r of the cross: Christ became sin for us,
Took the blame, bore the wrath; we stand forgiven at the cross.
Now the daylight flees; now the ground beneath quakes as its maker
bows His head.
Curtain torn in two, dead are raised to life, “Finished” the vict’ry cry.
Refrain
7
This the pow’r of the cross; Son of God, Precious Lamb, slain for us.
O to see my name written in the wounds, for through Your suff’ring I
am free.
Death is crushed to death, life is mine to live, won through Your
selfless love!
This the pow’r of the cross; Son of God, slain for us,
What a love, what a cost! We stand forgiven at the cross.
Crown Him! Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His
throne.
Hark! How the heav’nly anthem drowns all music but its own,
Awake, my soul and sing of Him who died for thee,
And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity.
Crown Him the lord of life, who triumphed o’er the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife for those He came to save.
His glories now we sing, who died and rose on high,
Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.
Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne,
Glory to the Lamb, the risen Christ!
Crown Him the Lord of love! Behold His hands and side,
Those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified.
All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou hast died for me!
Thy praise and glory shall not fail through out eternity.
Christ is risen! He is risen! Alleluia!
8
Refrain:
Had Christ, that once was slain, ne’er burst His three day prison,
Our faith had been in vain: but now hath Christ arisen,
Arisen, arisen, arisen.
My flesh in hope shall rest, and for a season slumber,
Till trump from east to west shall wake the dead in number. Refrain
Death’s flood hath lost his chill, since Jesus crossed the river;
Lover of souls, from ill my passing soul deliver. Refrain
PRAYERS
God of grace, you have freed us from our sins and made us a kingdom in
your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Accept all we offer you this day, and
strengthen us in the new life you have given us, through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
Anniversary Prayer
God of our ancestors we thank you for those who established, led and served
this parish over the past 185 years. We celebrate their commitment. For all
that has been,
All: We thank you.
We give thanks for our priest and this present congregation, for their diverse
ministries at home and abroad. We celebrate the present. For all that is,
All: We thank you.
Fill us with your Holy Spirit that we may grow in passion and confidence.
Empower us to carry the gospel into our neighbourhood and beyond as we
embrace each new day. For what will be,
All: We thank you. Amen.
May God, who has brought us out of bondage to sin into true and lasting
freedom in the Redeemer, bring you to your eternal inheritance. And the
blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon
this Eastertide and for ever. Amen.
ANNOUNCEMENTS

Jesus lives! Henceforth is death but the gate of life immortal;
This shall calm our trembling breath when we pass its gloomy portal.
Alleluia!
Jesus lives! For us he died; then, alone to Jesus living,
pure in heart may we abide, glory to our Saviour giving. Alleluia!
Jesus lives! Our hearts know well nought from us his love shall sever;
Life, nor death, nor powers of hell tear us from his keeping ever. Alleluia!
