Notes on Leadership

 Insufficient motivation leads to Failure

 Difference of intuition based on expertise rather than just gut feel!!

 Turn your weakest point into strongest point:

1. Goal
Simplicity of success
2. Get busy on the action

“Human” is the complex part!

3 types of Motivations:
1. Re-define – purpose – a big enough reason

Brain likes a priming pump- shift motivation and turn into inspiration
Motivation Inspiration
It’s like a thought experiment carried out on a group of people. If
confronted with jumble of words that describe elderly, one’s behaviour
can be influenced leading to say slow walking

2. Re-direct – mindset – a growth mindset Vs Fixed mindset

Growth Mindset: Differentiation between quality of effort and fixed
talent!
Fixed mindset: Puzzles – solvable & unsolvable!
Capacity to respond to disappointment & failure
Shift Disappointment into Opportunity Fulfillment
Action x Inspiration – Roadblock

3. Re-charge – energy
Without recovery – you sit in the stands. More recovery is more time off

Prioritise Energy over Time

Energy out => Energy in

It is body’s response to exercise that makes us stronger

(Action x Inspiration – Roadblock) x mindset x effort = > achievement

Energy
Mental recovery = Physical recovery
Be the Change you Seek
Change in Business Needs

AIRE Model of Achievement Excellence

Transdisciplinary innovation needs:

1. Purpose
2. Progress
3. People

Quick exercise:
End world poverty
1. Tax rich 90%
2. Tax big companies 90%
3. Buy what you need not what you want
4. Mandatory contribution to charities and companies
5. Food credits on size of families
Good mind exercise to excite and stimulate the brain
Remember the cellist of Sarajevo:

Memory is “state” dependent
Support the person, challenge the behaviour

Difference between Possibility and Probability

Possibility is binary – either possible or not – requires Imagination – possibility

mindset is crucial
Probability has a range – likelihood – requires Action

100%

80% Ranges of likelihood - Action

Anything is Possible – that’s the remit

0%

It is possible to do anything – probability though is subject to a range…..! so could be zero!

Addiction to substance is fear of pain!

Exercise:
My energy state in the last few weeks:

0 10
About 6
Stress Weakens
Recovery Strengthens
Issues are:
1. Mental – not good – volume of issues
2. Emotional – was bad but now good – wife’s cancer
How to assist with the above:

 Exercise
Aggregation of marginal gains

 Small breaks

Energy is a limited resource

Purpose (inspiration)

Different layers of Purpose:

Personal Purpose Vs Organisational Purpose

 Company
 Position (role) Levels of purpose Connect the levels
 Mine

It is okay to have a different purpose to your company’s

Intrinsic
Vs Purpose Deepen purpose to enjoy, motivate & energise

Extrinsic
The way you do Anything is
The way you do Everything!

 Let’s have a purpose conversation
 Make a public announcement
 Repeat and socialize it
 Connect the purpose through the layers (mine, position and company)
 Put recovery conversation in the calendar – create rituals

Unique challenges require unique solutions
 An emotion that’s stronger than fear is Hope
 Hope is not a Plan!!!
 Great adversity requires Leadership
 Downside is leadership without authority
Actions and reactions to events shows leadership

 If you wait to have all the answers to all the questions someone will beat you to it!
1. Just start it
Change – first reaction is resistance
2. Lead with sensitivity

3. Structure
You need a structure in place
More procedures says we don’t trust our people
4. Lead with simplicity

5. Presence – seeing it Vs be seen

Understanding and caring
6. Clarity of purpose
Why we do what we do – It is only when our resolve is tested!
With honesty and integrity
Leadership requires:
 Courage
 Face the challenge head on

You cannot change what happened, but you can change what happens next!

Long term change requires long term commitment

 Plan for a year – sow rice

 Plan for a decade – plant forest
 Plan for a lifetime – educate people

What’s the measure of our success?

Multiplier effect of one’s actions, differentiation:

 By chance
? Identify gaps in training and address that gap

 By choice
Courage in making hard decisions and then living with the outcome
