Marie Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867. She was a pioneer in the study of radioactivity and the first person to win two Nobel Prizes, in physics and chemistry, for discovering the elements radium and polonium. During World War I, she helped develop the first radiological centers for military use. She founded the Curie Institute in Paris, which remains a leading institute for medical research.
