The following text is for questions 1 to 4.

All human beings eat food and make use of the chemical energy in it, so do all other
animals. Perhaps you wonder where all that chemical energy comes from. Why doesn’t the food
all get used up?
The answer is that new food is being grown as fast as old food is used to. It is the green
plants that form the new food. Animals either eat the plants or eat other animals that have eaten
plants.
The green substance of plants is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll can absorb sunlight. When it
does so, it changes the energy of the sun into chemical energy. The chemical energy present in
sunlit chlorophyll is used to combine dioxide in the air with water from the soil. Starch and other
complicated compounds are formed. These are high in chemical energy obtained from the sunlit
chlorophyll.
They make up the food on which mankind and all other animals live. In the process of
forming this food, some oxygen atoms are left over. These are given off into the air by the
plants. The whole process is called photosynthesis.
Thus, plants use sunlight to from food and oxygen to from carbon dioxide and water
again. Plants change the sun’s energy into chemical energy. And animals change the animal
energy into kinetic and heat energy.

1. The text is about ....

A. The process of changing chemical energy
B. The formation of carbon dioxide
C. The green substance of plants
D. The process of photosynthesis
E. The use of chemical energy

2. What will happen when the chlorophyll absorbs sunlight? It will ....
A. Change heat into kinetic energy
B. Form complicated compound
C. Make use of heat energy
D. Change kinetic energy into chemical energy
E. Change the sun’s energy into chemical energy

3. From the text we know that ....

A. Plant need to heat energy to live
B. All human beings need chemical energy
C. Plants absorb sunlight to produce kinetic energy
D. Chlorophyll is the most important thing in photosynthesis
E. Sun’s energy cannot be formed into kinetic energy

4. The green substance of plants is chlorophyll. The underlined word in the above is closest in
meaning to ...
A. Core
B. Body
C. Stuff
D. Essence
E. Material

The following text is for question 5 to 7.

A flood is an overflow of an expanse of water that submerges land. In the sense of “
flowing water”, the world may also be applied to inflow of the tide. Flooding may result from the
volume of water within a body of water, such as a river or lake , which overflows or break
levees, with the result that some of the water escapes its unusual boundaries.
While the size of a lake or other body of water will vary with seasonal changes in
precipitation and show melt, it is not a significant flood unless such escapes of water endanger
land areas used by man like a village, city or other inhabited area.
Floods can also occur in rivers, when fl ow exceeds the capacity of the river channel,
particularly at bends or meanders. Flood often cause damage to homes and businesses if they
are placed in natural flood plains of rivers. While flood damage van be virtually eliminated by
moving away from and other bodies of water, since time out of mind, people have lived and
worked by the water to seek the sustenance and capitalize on the gains of cheap and easy
travel and commerce by being near water. That humans continue to inhabit areas threatened by
flood damage is evidence that the perceived value of living near the water exceeds the cost of
repeated periodic flooding.

5. What should people do to avoid the loss of their business caused by the flood?
A. Live and work by the body of water
B. Place in natural flood plains of rivers
C. Inhabit the areas threatened by flood damage
D. Move away from rivers and other bodies of water
E. Seek substance and benefit from cheap and easy travel commerce

6. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A. People do not live by the river for some reasons
B. Floods can be found at every bend and meander of a river
C. It is wise for people to leave the flood areas for the safety reason
D. Floods happen when rivers fl ow over their capacity of waterway
E. People prefer abandon the areas near the river because of the threat of floods

7. “……..,it is not significant flood unless such escapes of water endanger land areas used by
man…..” (paragraph 2) The underlined word is closest in meaning to….
A. Ordinary
B. Intensive
C. Sufficient
D. Important
E. Expensive

The following text is for question 8 to 11.

A tsunami is a series of ocean waves that sends surges of water, sometimes reaching
heights of over 100 feet (30.5 meters), onto land. These walls of water can cause widespread
destruction when they crash ashore.
These awe-inspiring waves are typically caused by large, undersea earthquakes at
tectonic plate boundaries. When the ocean floor at a plate boundary rises or falls suddenly, it
displaces the water above it and launches the rolling waves that will become a tsunami.
Most tsunami, about 80 percent, happen within the Pacific Ocean's "Ring of Fire," a
geologically active area where tectonic shifts make volcanoes and earthquakes common.
Tsunamis may also be caused by underwater landslides or volcanic eruptions. They may
even be launched, as they frequently were in Earth's ancient past, by the impact of a large
meteorite plunging into an ocean.
Tsunamis race across the sea at up to 500 miles (805 kilometers) an hour — about as
fast as a jet airplane. At that pace they can cross the entire expanse of the Pacific Ocean in less
than a day. And their long wavelengths mean they lose very little energy along the way.
A tsunami's trough, the low point beneath the wave's crest, often reaches shore first.
When it does, it produces a vacuum effect that sucks coastal water seaward and exposes
harbor and sea floors. This retreating of sea water is an important warning sign of a tsunami,
because the wave's crest and its enormous volume of water typically hit shore five minutes or so
later. Recognizing this phenomenon can save lives.
A tsunami is usually composed of a series waves, called a wave train, so its destructive
force may be compounded as successive waves reach shore. People experiencing a tsunami
should remember that the danger may not have passed with the first wave and should await
official word that it is safe to return to vulnerable locations.
Some tsunamis do not appear on shore as massive breaking waves but instead
resemble a quickly surging tide that inundates coastal areas.

8. Why did the author write the report?

A. To raise people' awareness about tsunami.
B. To warn people about an upcoming tsunami.
C. To inform people about past tsunamis.
D. To inform people about the different types of tsunami.
E. To warn people about the dangers of tsunami.

9. Tsunamis are usually the result of ...

A. The sudden rise or fall of ocean floors
B. Pacific Oceans "Ring of Fire"
C. The awe-inspiring waves
D. Volcanoes
E. Landslides

10. From the text, we know that Tsunami can be very destructive because ...
A. They come after earthquakes
B. They are caused by volcanic eruptions
C. They are tall, fast, forceful and repetitive
D. They have a vacuum effect
E. They occur suddenly

11. "Some tsunami do not appear on shore as massive breaking waves but instead resemble a
quickly surging tide that inundates coastal areas." (Paragraph 8) The underlined word is
closest in meaning to ...
A. Floods
B. Covers
C. Fills

Advertisements
There are many reasons for both sides of the question, "Should we have printed
advertisement'?" Many people have strong views and feel that ads are nothing more than
useless junk mail, while other people feel it is important source information.
There are some reasons why we should have advertisement in newspaper and
magazines. One reason is ads give us information about what is available. Looking at ads we
can find out what is on sale and what is new in the market. This is an easy way of shopping.
Another reason is that advertisement promotes business. When shop owners compete against
each other the buyer saves money, more people come to their shops and they sell more goods.
On the other hand, some people argue that ads should not be put in newspapers and
magazines for these various reasons. Firstly, ads cost the shopkeepers a lot of money to print
onto paper. Also some people don't like finding junk mail in their letter boxes. Ads also influence
people to buy items they don't need and can't really afford. Ads use up a lot of space and a lot
of effort has to be made the ads eye-catching.
After looking at both sides of issue, I think we should not have advertisements because
they cost a lot of money and take up a lot of room in the papers. I don't think I find some of them
interesting. I mainly disagree because it's junk mail.

12. Why does the writer present two sides of opinions of advertisements?
A. She/he wants to take side
B. She/he wants to be in the affirmative side
C. She/he uses the opinions to emphasize her own stance
D. She/he wants the readers know the opinion about the issue
E. She/he wants the readers to understand her stance

13. The writer influences the readers by repeatedly saying that ....
A. The ads are only garbage
B. The ads contain unimportant business information
C. The ads promote unnecessary service products
D. The ads inform us tips of easy shopping
E. The ads become the source of information

14. "Ads use up a lot of space and a lot of effort has to be made the ads eye-catching. The
underlined word is closest in meaning to ....
A. Newsworthy
B. Subtle
C. Plain

Muslim’s Headscarf
The right to freedom of religion is enshrined in the UN charter and considered by many
to be a basic human right. Some religions require special diet, others prayer at specific times.
Why should a religious mode of dress receive as much protection as these other aspects of
religious freedom?
Many Muslim women view the veil as a means to protect their modesty and privacy. Just
as we would not force any women to be seen in public in her underwear if she did not feel
comfortable doing so, why should a woman be forced to show her hair if she does not want to?
Modesty is a personal judgement, some are comfortable in the smallest bikini while others
prefer a lot more clothing. No one but the woman herself should make that decision.
Muslim women are not the only ones to feel coerced over their mode of dress. Most
people are affected by the societal norms surrounding them. Fashion trends could be seen in
exactly the same light as religious traditions.
Banning head coverings is only likely to provoke a more extreme reaction among highly
religious communities. Framing laws to ban only Islamic forms of dress could be considered an
attack on one religion. Feeling under attack could cause the Islamic community to close off into
itself. They could set up religious schools where their children can dress as they want them to
and not mix with children from other faiths. These effects could never be good for the integration
of society and would further the influence of extremists. Internationally, the perceived attack on
Islamic values would inflame wider Muslim opinion, feed conspiracy theories and add to the
dangerous feeling that there is a clash of civilizations.
Intolerant schools make up problems as an excuse for not allowing Muslims freedom of
religious expression. In a multicultural society, students should be aware of the different
religious practice and cultural traditions of their classmates, and be taught to understand and
respect these.
Based on the above discussion, the government should not banned Muslim’s headscarf
as a part of school or office uniforms.

17. What is the first paragraph called?

A. It is an obstacle of their freedom
B. It is to protect their modesty and privacy
C. It is a fashion trend among them
D. They feel being forced to wear it
E. It is what their parents told them to wear

19. Paragraph 4 tells us that banning on Muslim headscarf could ….

A. Arouse social conflict among social communities
B. Maintain solidarity among social communities
C. Provoke a more extreme reaction among highly religious communities
D. Teach students social awareness
E. Make Muslim women loose their identity

20. What does the writer suggest?

A. Schools should not be tolerant to any freedom of religious expression
B. Students should know various social groups among the society
C. The government should ban Muslims headscarf because it may arouse conflicts
D. Muslim’s headscarf as a part of school or office uniforms should not be banned
E. Schools are allowed to ban Muslim headscarf because it may arouse many problems

21. “Intolerant schools make up problems as an excuse for not allowing…..” (paragraph 5) The

A. Reason
B. Custom
C. Expectation
D. Evidence
E. Requirement

SANGKURIANG
A long time ago, the ancient land of Sunda was ruled by a king and queen who had but a
single daughter. Her name was Dayang Sumbi. She was beautiful and clever but also
pampered and spolited.
One day as she was weaving in her pavilion, she became moody and distracted, which
caused her to keep dropping her shuttle on the floor. Once when it fell she exclaimed she would
marry the one who gave it back to her. At that very moment her dog Tumang, a demigod
possessing magic powers, came up to her with the shuttle in his mouth. Dayang Sumbi had to
marry him.
They lived happily together, and Dayang Sumbi gave birth to a baby boy, human in
appearance but endowed with his father’s magic powers. She named him Sangkuriang. As the
boy grew up, he was always guarded by the faithful dog Tumang, whom he knew only as a
companion and not as his father, Sangkuriang became handsome and brave.
One day his mother asked him to go hunting with the dog and bring her venison for a
feast. After hunting all day without success, Sangkuriang worried about facing his mother
empty-handed. Desperate, he took an arrow and shot the dog. He returned home and handed
over the meat to his pleased mother. Soon after the feast, however, Dayang Sumbi questioned
her son about the absence of Tumang. At first he evaded her queries but finally told her what
had happened. She was horrified and struck her son so hard on the temple that he collapsed.
For that, the old king banished his daughter from the court and she was made to roam around
the kingdom. Sangkuriang recovered with a large scar on his temple, and he too left the court to
wander about the world.
Years later, Sangkuriang met a beautiful woman and instantly fell in love with her. It was
his own mother-they did not recognize each other. He pro posed to her and she agreed to marry
him. On the day before the wedding, as she was caressing her fiancee’s hair, Dayang Sumbi
detected the scar on the temple. Horror struck her, for she was about to marry her own son,
Sangkuriang. Without revealing the whole truth to him, she tried unsuccessfully to dissuade him.
Desperate to avoid the marriage, she set conditions she thought impossible to meet.
Sangkuriang had to make a lake that filled the whole valpley and build a boat for the couple to
sail in, all before dawn.
Sangkuriang started to work. His love gave him extraordinary strength, and he used his
magic powers to summon the spirits to help him. With boulders and mud they dammed the river
in the valley and the water rose and began to form a lake. In the early morning hours he
chopped down a huge tree in the forest and began hollowing it out to make a boat. When
Dayang Sumbi saw that he was about to accomplish what she has thought impossible, she
called on the gods to bring the sun up early and thwart Sangkuriang.
The cock crowed, the sun rose much earlier than usual, and Sangkuriang realized he
had been deceived. In a fit of fury he caused Dayang Sumbi and kicked the half-finished boat
back into the forest. There it lies upside down today, forming the mountain Tangkuban Perahu
(Upturned Boat). Not far away is the stump of the tree Sangkuriang had felled, now called Bukit
Tinggi. The dam Sangkuriang had built caused the valley to become a lake, where both
Sangkuriang and Dayang Sumbi drowned themselves. They were never heard of again.
