Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Force and Motion

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th
Content Standard Addressed:
S4P3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the relationship between balanced and
unbalanced forces.
b. Construct an argument to support the claim that gravitational force affects the motion of an object.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Knowledge Constructor: Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct
knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
Selected Technology Tool:
☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

I will use a UDL lens when analyzing the data I receive from this assessment in order to identify the strengths,
needs, and interests of individual students across the three learning networks (recognition, action and
expression, and engagement) and combine them into a UDL group profile.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
This activity will be used as a pre-assessment to see what the students already know about force and motion.
It will also be used as a fun and engaging way to get the students interested in the topic before going through
the lessons to teach the content.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☒ Other (please explain): Pre-
assessment

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The students will be using iPads to use Kahoot!. They will select their answers on the iPad while the questions
are displayed on the Smart Board. While students are working on the problems, I will be walking around the

room making sure the students are staying on task and all of the iPads are working. The activity will last
around 10 minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☐ Yes
☒ No
Why or why not?
Since this is a preassessment, I am not going to provide students with the correct answer to the questions. I
am going to use the information to form my teaching and my planning for assessments but I do not want to
confuse the students or just give them the answers to questions without teaching it and giving them
explanations.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT activity, I will analyze the data Kahoot! provides me with and use it to form my teaching. I will
see what content I only have to briefly review and what content I need to go in depth on.

How will the data be used?

I will use the data to see what the students already know about force and motion. I will use it to form the
lessons and material I will teach in regards to this standard. This activity will not be used to give a grade for
students. I will not discuss the data with students at this time. At the end of the lesson, they will do the same
Kahoot! over and they will be able to see their answers then and we will discuss the questions and the
answers at that time.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I have never used Kahoot! before so it is very new to me. My personal learning goal will be for me to be able
to use the data I collect to intelligently inform my future instruction and better differentiate for my group of
students.
Reflective Practice:
I feel this activity would be a great way to get the students intrigued and interested in force and motion
before the unit even starts. In order to extend the lesson, I will go over the vocabulary words friction, force,
and interaction. The students will then read the article, “How Soccer Can Help Us Understand Physics”. I will
read the article aloud while the students follow along. Once students are finished reading the article I will
verbally discuss questions on the article as a whole group to facilitate further understanding of force, motion,
and friction. After that, the students would play PBS Sid the Science Kid Friction Game to further their
understanding of push vs. pull and the effect friction has on movement. This will act as another technology
tool that would further enhance this project.
