De Broglie Waves

HOUR 31
Hour 31
• Discuss the significance of the de Broglie
Hypothesis
• Solve for the wavelength and frequency of a
particle given its momentum or kinetic energy.
• Elaborate on the duality of matter and light
and know when one aspect is more useful in
explaining observed phenomena.
• Recognize the wave function of a free-particle
with definite momentum and kinetic energy.
Wave-Particle Duality
• Observed in light
– Wave: Diffraction, Interference
– Particle: Photoelectric effect, Compton scattering

• How about in matter?

“Nature loves symmetry.
Light is dualistic in nature,
behaving in some situations
like waves and in others like
particles. If nature is
symmetric, this duality
should also hold for matter.”

- Prince Louis de Broglie, 1924

Principle of Complementarity

• Wave and particle nature complement each

other.
Particles as Waves: de Broglie Waves
• De Broglie: Waves behave as particles,
particles should behave like waves!

• Introduced de Broglie wavelength as

𝒉
𝝀=
𝒑
• Where p is the momentum of the particle
(Recall relativistic and nonrelativistic momentum)
de Broglie Waves
• We can also define the de Broglie frequency as

𝑬
𝒇=
𝒉

• Where E is the energy of the particle (Recall

relativistic and nonrelativistic energy)

Exercise!
Why don’t we see matter behaving as waves in
everyday life?

Suppose you are walking at 1.0 m/s. Calculate

your de Broglie wavelength. Compare with it
with your height, “width”, all other “lengths” in
your body.
Quiz #1! (1/4)
What is the kinetic energy of an electron with de
Broglie wavelength of 364 nm?
(me = 9.11 × 10−31 kg, h = 6.626 × 10−34 J ⋅ s)

• 𝑝= = 1.82 × 10−27 kg-m/s
𝜆
𝑝2
• 𝐾= = 1.82 × 10−24 J
2𝑚
Wave functions
• Describes particle as a wave
– Spatial distribution
• Usually written as 𝜓 or 𝜙
Free Particle Wave function
• Free particle
– No potential
– Moves with definite energy and momentum

𝒊(𝒌𝒙 −𝝎𝒕)
𝝍 𝒙, 𝒕 = 𝑨𝒆
𝟐𝝅
where 𝒌 = and 𝝎 = 𝟐𝝅𝒇
𝝀
Quiz #2!
• Give the energy and magnitude of the
momentum of an electron with wavefunction

𝑖 1.70×107 𝑥−5.09×1015 𝑡
𝜓 𝑡 =𝐴𝑒
