TASK 1
…….
……………
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
 Don’t give your production a title.
 Try to PARAPHRASE the information that precedes the chart and use it in your
INTRODUCTION.
 Differentiate MAIN FEATURES from MINOR DETAILS. Make sure you include the first.
 Don’t forget to add RELEVANT DATA & FIGURES (not generalisations or broad trends)
 Remember that the closing statement is not a conclusion, but an OVERVIEW.
 There is a MINIMUM of words but not a MAXIMUM.

Paragraph Organization
All paragraphs include a controlling, TOPIC SENTENCE that comes first in the text, followed
by two or three subordinate, SUPPORTING sentences. Afterwards, you may want to
include another sentence that provides an EXAMPLE, and/or round it up with a sentence
where you illustrate the presented idea with your own EXPERIENCE.

Visually, a paragraph should look like this:

[TOPIC SENTENCE] + [SUPPORT SENT 1] + [SUPPORT SENT 2] +

[EXAMPLE] + [OWN EXPERIENCE]

As you can see, to write a coherent and well-organized paragraph, ALL SENTENCES must
refer to the TOPIC SENTENCE.
The best way to check if this is accomplished, is by reading the TS and considering if it is
a suitable summary of the whole paragraph. If somehow the main idea is in another part
of the text, or if there is an idea that doesn’t fit into the main one, then our paragraph
needs further correction and analysis.
Task-based work

Complete the following scheme with the ideas that you’ve taken:

Introduction

information, but preview/recall what the main paragraphs will describe in further detail

Essay Organization

To be able to discuss each part of the essay in more detail, let’s look at this model task:

Introduction

Conclusion
Body Paragraphs
Paragraphs should follow the same internal structure that was presented in Task 1:

[TOPIC SENTENCE] + [SUPPORT SENT 1] + [SUPPORT SENT 2] +

[EXAMPLE] + [OWN EXPERIENCE]

What each paragraph will be about depends on the overall structure we choose for our
production. This, in turn, will be shaped by the type of essay we are asked to write, so it
is very important to read and understand the task before we organize our paragraphs.
Let’s look at some organizer models for the different IELTS essay types:

The main important feature is to make a straightforward paragraph organization that can lead
to a clear distinction between the advantages and disadvantages of the issue. It is advisable,
however, to acknowledge both sides of the matter, despite the “side” you take.
