OBJECTIVES:
1.To make the students use the modal verb „Can” in sentences of their own.
2.To have the students eliciting the contexts where the modal verb „Can” appear
3.To use the modal verb „Can” properly in sentences of their own.
4.To solve some exercises with the modal verb Can

CONTENTS

OBJECTIVE1: ESTIMATED TIME: 10 MINUTES


CONTEXT: SS’ Previous knowledge about modal verbs and especially about modal
verb „Can”
ACTIVITY/CLASS ORGANISATION: SS are divided into groups. They are given
some sheets of paper and asked to solve the requirements on them.The requirements
are:
1.Imagine you are having a friendly talk to some people and they all started to boast
with things they are capable of.Make up the dialogue.
2.Imagine you have just heard some unbelievable things.Express your doubts.
3.Imagine you are a tourist who has just entered the lobby of a big hotel.You are
speaking to the receptionist.Make-up offers and requests.
AIDS: task-sheets
LANGUAGE: all and any but mostly modal verbs.
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: SS. May no tuse the modal verb Can in their
sentences.The teacher must try to elicite the desired answer ,asking questions of the
type”Can you tell this in some other way?”.
OBJECTIVE2:ESTIMATED TIME: 1O MINUTES
ACTIVITY/CLASS ORGANISATION:
The teacher will ask the students to write on the blackboard those sentences
containing the modal verbs,present in their previous task.Then the teacher will
underline the modal verb Can and will ask the students about the reason for its usage
there.Whenever a student gives the right answer, the teacher will ask him to write it
ton the blackboard.If there aren’t enough examples for all the situations when modal
verb „can” appear, the teacher will produce some more situations, till the whole chart
of modal verb „Can „ usage will be filled in.

LANGUAGE: ALL AND ANY
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: THE SS. May not see clearly why the verb has been used
so the teacher must act like a helper and explain well all the situations.

OBJECTIVE3:ESTIMATED TIME: 10 MINUTES


ACTIVITY/CLASS ORGANISATION
THE SS. Will be asked to keep their groups.Then they will be assigned a new
topic.The teacher tells them they are to produce a short story or a joke,where they are
to use modal verb „can” with some different values.The students in the other groups
will have to recognize the values of the modal verb and write them on a piece of
paper.In the end the teacher will discuss the answers pointing up to the mistakes and
trying to correct them.
LANGUAGE: ALL AND ANY
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: THE SS may have difficulties in using the modal verb in
sentences of their own and they also may have problems with their recognising the
values of the modal verb..The students must help them.
OBJECTIVE 4: ESTIMATED TIME: 20 MINUTES
ACTIVITY/CLASS ORGANISATION: The students will be asked to solve some
exercises ,centred upon the modal verb „can”.
LANGUAGE: ALL AND ANY.
AID: Task-sheets
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: THE SS. May have difficulties in solving the
exercises.The teacher will gently correct the mistakes and explain again the points
where they didn’t seem to have understood well.
HOMEWORK: . Write about a genius.Tell what he/she could do when he/she was
young,refer to present and express some things about the future.
