Octave.- The frequency interval between f7 and f2 is one octave tf fz / h = 2. The numerical
value of the frequency interval in octaves is given by lb(fz / fi, (fz> fr)
Wavelength: (L) Distance in the direction of propagation of a periodic wave between two successive

Sound power:- Rate per unit time at which airborne sound energy is radiated by a source
NOTE: The sound power ls expressed in watts.
Sound Absorption:- A process in which sound energy is reduced when sound waves pass through a

Sound Source:
Random sound was generaled with the help of powedul loud speakers. The speakers were atlached with an
amplifier and a computer to generate the noise at different specified frequencies. One loud speaker was placed
in the receiving room for measurement of decay €te which is used for calculation of sound absorption of the
receiving room while the other speakerwas placed in the source room to produce the pink noise.
Noise Msasurement:
Noise was measu.ed with the help of microphones. Five calibraled 'type 1" micrc phones complying with
accuracy requirements of AST[, E 90-02 Section 9.0 were placed in source rcom and five were placed in
receiving room. All microphones were calib€ted over the whole range of test frequency. Sensitivity checks of all
microphones were made in accordance wiih AST[, E 90 section 9.3.1. Mcrophones were approximately 1.5 m

INTRODUCTION
This report gives the results of Sound Transmission Loss tests and determination of Sound Transmission Class /
acoustic performance on the following types of blocks, produced by Al Amaar Block Factory. Dubai.
F
TESTING METHOD
tr
f The specimen were tested in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials designation ASTM
E 90 - 2004, "Standard Test Method for Laboratory Measurement of Airborne Sound Transmission Loss of
Building Partitions", and classified in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials
designation ASTM E 413 - 2004,"Classification for Rating Sound
lnsulation" and ASTM Standard E 1332 - 90
T (Re-Approved 2003) entitled, "Standard Classification for Determination of Outdoor-lndoor Transmission C/ass".
DEFINITIONS
F Hertz: - (Hz) 1 Hz I
I
is the frequency of a periodic phenomenon of which the period is s.
Decibel: dB*-the term used to identify ten times the common logarithm of the ratio of two like quantities
t
proportional to power or energy. (See level, sound transmission loss.) Thus, one decibel corresponds to
a power ratio of 'l 00.'1 .
Noise: lnterference of an electrical or acoustical nature. Random noise is a desirable signal used in
t
acoustical measurements. Pink noise is random noise whose spectrum falls at 3 dB per octave: it is
useful for use with sound analyzers with constant percentage bandwidths. Unwanted, bothersome, or
distracting sound.
It- .
o
Octave: - The frequency interval between f1 and f2 is one octave
value of the frequency interval in octaves is given by lb(f2
tf fz / h = 2. The
/ f 1), (f2> f1)
Wavelength: (L) Distance in the direction of propagation of a periodic wave between two successive
points where at a given time the phase is the same
numerical
T . Sound power:- Rate per unit time at which airborne sound energy is radiated by a source
NOTE: The sound power is expressed in wafts.
I Reverberation room: A room so designed that the reverberant sound field closely approximates a
diffuse sound field, both in the steady state when the sound source is on, and during the decay after the
source of sound has stopped
I . Sound Absorption: - A process in which sound energy is reduced when sound waves pass through a
medium or strike a surface. Also known as acoustic absorption.
I . Sound transmission loss, TL: Of a partition, in a specified frequency band, ten times the common
logarithm of the ratio of the airborne sound power incident on the partition to the sound power

. transmitted by the partition and radiated on the other side. The quantity so obtained is expressed in
decibels. The reduction in sound level when sound passes through a partition or ceiling system.
t GENERAL
The sound-insulating property of a partition element is expressed in terms of the sound transmission loss. The
t procedure for determining this quantity is to mount (and perimeter seal) the test specimen as a partition between
two reverberation rooms. Sound is introduced in one of the rooms (the source room) and measurements are
made of the noise reduction between source room and receiving room. The rooms are so arranged and
constructed that the only significant sound transmission between them is through the test specimen.
h The test opening is constructed such that it is approximately one inch larger in size than the test specimen. The
specimen is placed in the test opening on a half-inch base of "fine mortar", to isolate it from the supporting base.
T The space between the test specimen and the wall opening is sealed on both sides employing the same sealing
material.
Ir The purpose of the Sound Transmission Class (STC) is to provide a single figure rating that can be used
for comparing the sound-insulating properties of partition elements used for general building design
T
t
purposes. The higher the rating (STC) the greater the sound insulating properties of the partition.
*(The purpose of the Outdoor-lndoor Transmission (OITC) is to provide a single number rating that can be used
for comparing building fagade designs, including walls, doors, windows and combinations thereof. This rating is
I designed to correlate with subjective impressions of the ability of building elements to reduce the
loudness of ground and air transportation noise. lt is intended to be used as a rank ordering device.)
*Only for information
overall
T For testing purpose the specimen were installed in a manner similar to actual construction using sand cement
I mortar, with a careful simulation of normal constraint and sealing conditions at the perimeter and at the joints of
the specimen.

Signal Spectrum
The sound signals used for this test were random noise having a continuous spectrum within each octave band
level. These signals were generated by using a loud speakers, amplifier, purpose built software, computer and
specific hardware (from "National lnstruments" USA) to connect the loud speakerwith computer.
Sound Source:
Random sound was generated with the help of powerful loud speakers. The speakers were attached with an
amplifier and a computer to generate the noise at different specified frequencies. One loud speaker was placed
in the receiving room for measurement of decay rate which is used for calculation of sound absorption of the
receiving room while the other speaker was placed in the source room to produce the pink noise.
