The Arabic title of the book (An-Nāsikh -wal- Mansūkh, خ12345 وا89:35 )اis a common title for a book that
deals with abrogation in the Qur'an. 1. An-Nāsikh -wal- Mansūkh (i.e. Abrogating & Abrogated), Abu
Ja'afar An-Nah'has, Beirut, 2003. 2. An-Nāsikh -wal- Mansūkh (i.e. Abrogating & Abrogated), Ibn Al-
'Araby Al-Ma'afiry, Beirut 2003. 3. Nawāsikh Al-Qur'an (i.e. The Abrogating of the Qur'an), Ibn Al-Jauzy,
Beirut 2002.
The historical background of the Qura'nic verses, which is called by Muslim theologians Asbāb An-
Nuzool (i.e Reasons & Occasions of Revelation), provides a basis to understand the rationale for the
various views concerning abrogation. It answers the question why a verse is abrogated.

PREFACE.
Knowledge of abrogating
! and abrogated verses is essential and one
of the helps to the study of the Koran, and as it is a sealed subject to Indian Maulavies in
general with the exception of few great Arabic Scholars (Maulanas,) I have ventured to
write this book for the general information of my friends (Mohammadans as well as
Christians.) I shall be highly obliged for constructive criticisms addressed to me.
1. Tafsir Jalalain with its marginal note by Abi Abdullah Mohammad bin
Hazam, published by Al-Babi Al-Halabi and Brothers, Cairo.
2. Annasikh-wal-Mansukh by Abul Qasim, published by Hindia Press, Cairo.
3. For English translation and names of suras, Rodwell's Koran. [The English
translation and names of the suras are from Yusuf Ali’translation]1
4. For the number of verses, Flügels' Arabic Koran. [The verse number in
brackets correspond to the verse number of the Cairo edition of the Qur’an.]2
My special thanks are due to Rev. W. H. T. Gairdner and Sheikh Iskandar Abdul
Masih—my teachers, who have helped me by their suggestions, and corrections. But for
their help this work would never have come into existence.
1
Ali, Abdullah Yusuf, The Qur'an: Text, Translation and Commentary, Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an, Inc,
Elmhurst, New York, U.S. Edition 1987, pp. 1862.
2
Rodwell’s translation uses the verse numeration of the old Flügel edition of the Qur'an. This edition of
the Abrogation in the Koran uses Yusuf Ali’s translation for the English text of the Qur’an, and it has the
verse numeration of the Cairo edition of the Qur’an in brackets [].

Three kinds of Abrogation () are to be found in connection with the Koran.

Abdullah bin Masud said "Muhammad taught me a verse and I got it by heart and
wrote it in my book. When I returned to my place I could not remember anything of it.
Next morning when I opened my book, I found the page, on which it was written, white. I
reported the matter to Muhammad. He said to me.
"O Ibn Masud that verse has been taken up (back to God) yesterday."

[Since the Sword Verse, which is mentioned in Sura 9:5, abrogates many of the Qur'anic
verses, we will cite this verse the first time, then we put the words "Sword Verse"
instead, to avoid redundancy. To facilitate the readers, we set forth the differences below.
The exact verse (Muhkam, B>[) and abrogated verse (Mansūkh, ), and abrogating
verse (Nāsikh,
) are given for every passage.]
1
An-Nāsikh -wal- Mansūkh, by Ibn Khuzyamh states 113 verses are abrogated by the Sword verse (9: 5),
and 9 verses are abrogated by the Fighting verse (9: 29): "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last
Day."
