Dear Cooperating Teacher,

I am a Special Education major with a minor in reading and early childhood special education.
Currently, I am a Senior in the Northern State University Teacher Education program and am
expected to graduate in May 2019. I am excited to be able to be placed with you and look
forward to observing and learning from you. My goals are to be able to learn more about
classroom management strategies, classroom procedures, and more about the assessments you
use.
During my time at Northern State University I have been able to observe and assist in a
multitude of classrooms including a Preschool, Kindergarten, 4th-5th grade Resource Room, and
9th- 12th grade Resource rooms. I have recently been able to observe at Simmons Elementary in 3
different Kindergarten classrooms. During this placement I have been able to see how the start of
the school year begins with kindergarteners and assist the teachers with daily writing and
behavior management. I have also been placed in the May Overby Elementary School special
education resource room with grades 4th-5th. In this placement I was able to observe an KTEA
assessment being given and I was able to teach several lessons in paragraph structure, reading
comprehension, and digraphs. In Groton, South Dakota, I have observed a high school special
education resource room. During that placement I did work one on one with several students on
courses including Earth Science and Language Arts.
In addition to my public-school placements I was able to assist at the Aberdeen Montessori
Preschool and developed a working knowledge and understanding of the Montessori curriculum
and techniques. During my time at Aberdeen Montessori Preschool I was able to work with
students individually and in a whole group working with writing and math instruction. I have
also been a Reading Tutor at the Northern State University Reading Clinic for two semesters,
tutoring 2 different students in 4th grade and 6th grade for 7 weeks each. During that time, I
administered the GORT-5 and TWS assessments to both students. I have been able to tutor the
students on the structure of a word and work on reading comprehension.
Finally, I am the Treasurer of Northern State University’s Council for Exceptional Children. I
have been involved with starting and setting up an Autism Walk in Aberdeen, SD and have also
been involved with Spread the Word to End the Word and the Stryder Bike Program. I have
recently joined Northern State University’s Chapter of South Dakota Education Association as
well. I am thankful and excited to get to have this consideration to observe and learn in your
classroom. Please contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Thank You,
DeAnne Taylor
