I. Homemade Organic Powder From Swietenia macrophylla (Mahogany) Seeds
As A Cheap and Safe Substitute To Commercially Available Pest Killers
Swietenia macrophylla seeds (SMS) have long been used in Malaysian folk-lore
medicine as a natural treatment for diabetes and hypertension. Taking small doses of
seeds are observed by those who believe in its medicinal properties. On the other hand,
here in the Philippines, these seeds are believed to be poisonous. These seeds could be
found nearly everywhere around its tree. Filipino children would play with it, but elder
people would usually reprimand their kids to throw it away because it is believed to be
toxic. The researchers would like to validate the toxicity of these seeds in a way that
could also possibly benefit the people in the community.
The researchers propose that the seeds will be tested to cockroaches. If they really
do contain a certain amount of toxicity that will enable it to be an effective substitute to
commercial pesticides. Cockroaches are the most common pests found in all kinds of
homes and pose a threat to human health which is why the researchers have chosen to
test the seeds to them. These pests causes numerous illness and infection to the human
body, but they can be prevented by getting rid of cockroaches. If, ever the results of the
experiment will be successful, this will be a cheaper and safer alternative for
commercially available pesticides that negatively affects human health as well as
environmental conditions.
The experimental procedures would have to take place for approximately three
weeks. On the first week the cockroaches will be subjected under controlled
environments and will be provided with the same food and water to ensure that there will
be no other unprecedented factors involved in the process. The second week will be
intended for when the powderized seeds are incorporated into their food intake. This will
continue for a week and the cockroaches will be under regular observation. And the last
week will be allotted for the period wherein only the powderized seeds will be fed to
them. The researchers will determine then if mahogany seeds is an effective cockroach
killer, or a possible pesticide.
II. Phytoremediating Agen t For Endowing Toxic Contaminated Soil
Toxic contaminated soil is a widespread problem that is currently faced by the country
at the present, but is also one of the problems that are mostly over-looked and taken for
granted. Not much attention is brought to it, therefore majority are uninformed and there
are only little research being made to find solutions to it. Direct use of green living plants
for situ, or in place removal degradation or containment of contaminated soils sludges
sediments surface water and groundwater: thus making it a low cost solar energy driven
clean up technique. Green grasses are the mostly recommended plants to be used.
A big percentage of the land areas in Negros, as well as in the whole Philippines, are
dying or are toxic contaminated because of wastes, landfill, and other human activities
such as deforestation and conversion of rural lands to commercial lots. This study will
aim to salvage dying soil from home based gardens to landfill areas and even in river
banks, that were once polluted with so much garbage. Carabao grass as treatment to
dying soil. This could help to bring back natural vegetation and to bring back animals,
such as birds, fishes, and other wild animals, to these certain areas and bring it back to its
natural state.
The researchers are planning to grow carabao grasses in a controlled environment

while observing it for two weeks, then toxic waste, specifically lead waste products will
be added onto the grown grass, and will be observed for another one week. Comparison
of toxic contents from before and during data will be done. After which, another set of
carabao grass will be planted together with the intoxicated ones, and the researchers will
see, within another two weeks if the newly planted grass are infected with the toxic
wastes or if the intoxicated plants are medicated by the newly planted ones.
This study will be able to benefit backyard growers, vacant lot owners, garden
enthusiasts, farmers, and even those who are just generally concerned about the welfare
of their environment.
III. Effectiveness of Ginger Zingiber officinale (Ginger), Musa (Banana), and
cucumis melo (Melon) As Potential Acid Neutralizers To Cure Symptoms of
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease : A Comparative Study
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or more commonly known as Acid Reflux, is a

digestive disorder that affects the lower esophageal sphincter and the ring of the muscle
between the esophagus and the stomach. Many people suffer from heartburn or acid
indigestion caused by GERD (Khatri M. MD, 2017). Anyone can suffer acid reflux due
to a variety of reasons like eating too much oily and acidic foods, unbalanced diet,
inappropriate after-eating activities, as well as stress and lifestyle.
There are numerous ways suggested by dietitians and doctors on how to treat the
symptoms of GERD but it is an incurable disease. A person who suffers from it will be
carrying it for the rest of his life. Medications could be taken, as well as natural remedies,
and for worse cases, they would need to undergo surgery. One very common treatment
for acid reflux is by eating fruits and vegetables that are believed and studied to have
medicinal properties, of which including ginger, banana, and melon.
In this study, the researchers aim to find out if these three most recommended home
remedies for acid reflux include neutralizing abilities as a reason why they are
considered as treatment for the aforementioned disease. The researchers will be using
three different acids that are present in the stomach; namely hydrochloric acid, potassium
chloride and sodium chloride; which are used in the stomachs digestive process. Then,
aqueous extracts will be taken from ginger, banana, and melon. They will be mixed with
the acids and their pH levels will be measured to see if they really have neutralizing
abilities. The results will also be compared if which of the three is more effective.
This study is beneficial to the community because everyone can suffer from a heart
burn, and these studies would help people with GERD understand furthermore the
scientific backgrounds of how these natural remedies help in curing the symptoms of
their life-long condition.
