adherence to the University’s statutes and regulations.

History of the award: This scholarship was established in 2016 thanks to the generosity of
distinguished Malaysian alumnus Tan Sri Dr Ngau Boon Keat.
Tan Sri Dr Ngau grew up in Malaysia, and graduated from the University of Canterbury in 1971
with a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. After working for Mobil Oil in
Singapore, in 1975 he joined Malaysia’s newly formed national oil and gas company, Petronas.

• applicants enrolled for a master's degree at the University and wishing to transfer to a doctoral
programme must have completed the transfer.
In addition, for applicants who have completed the academic requirements but not the non-academic
requirements for the BE(Hons) degree, offers of awards are conditional on the completion and crediting of
the non-academic requirements by 15 March in the year following application. Students may not take up the
scholarship until such non-academic requirements have been completed and credited.
5 Scholarship payments will normally resume automatically when a student re-enrols after a period of

suspension. If a scholarship recipient does not resume the programme of research within one month of the
end of the approved suspension period, the scholarship will be terminated. In cases of suspensions greater
than six months, including extensions of the suspension period, scholarship payments will not be reinstated
unless approved by the Dean of Postgraduate Research (in the case of doctoral students) or the Dean of
Engineering and Forestry (in the case of master’s students).
6 During a post-thesis-submission enrolment period, any remaining stipend will be paid, up until the

examination process is complete.

Tan Sri Dr Ngau co-founded (in 1984), and is currently Executive Chairman of, Dialog Group,
one of Malaysia’s leading listed companies, which provides services to the oil, gas, and
petrochemical industries around the world. With his wife Jean Ngau he co-founded the charity
MyKasih, which provides food aid, health awareness and financial literacy programmes,
children’s education, and skills training programmes to less fortunate Malaysians. Tan Sri Dr
Ngau was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering by the University of Canterbury in
April 2012.
