1 NTPC to take over Kanti, Nabinagar JV power plants for Rs 3,000 crore
State-run power giant NTPC is likely to finalise the acquisition of entire stake of Bihar State Power Holding
Company Ltd (BSPHC) in its two JV plants at Nabinagar and Kanti for around Rs 3,000 crore in a month.
"The negotiation is in advanced stages. NTPC will acquire entire stake of BSPHC, erstwhile Bihar State
Electricity Board (BSEB), in Kanti and Nabinagar plants for around Rs 3,000 crore in a month," a source
said. The Bihar political leadership has spoken many times about their intention to sell the BSPHC stake in
the Nabinagar and Kanti power plants to NTPC.

2 'Telecom, power sectors contributed to NPA problem more than anything else
Congress leader and former union minister P Chidambaram today said telecom and power sectors have
contributed to the NPA problem more than anything else due to the 'malicious twist' given to the UPA
government's policies governing them. "I think the CAG report on telecom was a gross exaggeration. The
CAG report on coal was focused on a few cases. But then all the 212 coal mines were cancelled. I think we
failed to treat a business problem as a business problem and find the business solution," he said.

3 India, France ink Jaitapur N-deal but tech, tariff concerns remain
Nuclear Power Corporation (NPCIL) and EDF of France on Saturday signed an agreement for building the
10,000-MW (megawatt) Jaitapur nuclear power plant, making India the fifth country to opt for the EPR
(European pressurised reactor) technology that is yet to become commercially operational anywhere in
the world. A statement issued by NPCIL said the agreement, signed to coincide with French president
Emannuel Macron's ongoing visit, defines the project’s industrial framework, the roles and responsibilities
of the partners and lays down a timetable for the next step.

5 EESL expects more companies to bid for 2nd electric cars contract
Energy Efficiency Services (EESL), a state-run venture, expects wider participation from auto
manufacturers for its new global tender to procure 10,000 electric cars to replace government vehicles in
India. “Carmakers like Hyundai and Kia Motors have been showcasing their electric vehicles at different
occasions recently. I would assume they would take part in our second tender,” Saurabh Kumar, MD of
EESL, told ET on Thursday.

6 India, France agree to step up cooperation in atomic energy, space tech

India and France have decided to step up cooperation in space technology and use it in the maritime
domain. The two sides also decided to expedite work on the Jaitapur nuclear power plant during talks
between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron. Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) and Central National D'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) inked an agreement for end-to-end
solution for detection, identification and monitoring of vessels in the regions of interest. India and France
share a robust relationship in the area of space which is five-decades-old.

Renewable Sector News Update

1 PM Narendra Modi calls for concessional, less-risky financing for solar projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called for concessional financing and less-risky funds for solar
projects to raise the share of solar power in the energy basket, provide cheaper electricity and cut
carbon emissions. Speaking at the founding conference of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), he said
India will generate 175 gigawatts (GW) of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2022. This would
be more than double the present renewable energy capacity and would be enough to overtake
renewable expansion in the European Union for the first time.

2 India should simplify clean energy rules: EDF chief

India needs to simplify regulations to meet its goal of achieving 175 GW of renewable power capacity
by 2022 and it is for regulators to see if aggressive bidding for projects are yielding results, said Jean-
Bernard Lévy, Chairman of French power utility Électricité de France (EDF). He said India sits “very high”
on the company’s priority list and EDF could do better here if some problem areas in the sector are
addressed. “I am not saying it is not moving because you have a lot of investment. You cannot say that
nothing is being done, but the acceleration that is needed in order to meet the objectives of 175 GW
will be more efficient and less costly to everybody if they can be harmonised,” Lévy told ET.

3 International Solar Summit helps India take on leadership role

The maiden International Solar Alliance Summit is not only an attempt to fight climate change through
cost effective renewable energy but also an attempt by India to acquire a leadership role in the
developing world where China, by virtue of its economic prowess, has made huge inroads over the past
two decades. PM Narendra Modi’s initiative that culminated in this Summit would help India to express
power in a manner that is benign and rule-based, unlike China’s more aggressive and expansionist
postures in geo-politics.

4 India congratulates Egypt for joining International Solar Alliance
India has congratulated Egypt for signing the framework agreement of the International Solar Alliance,
a treaty-based global body for promotion of solar energy in alliance with 121 countries. India and France
are co-hosting the first International Solar Alliance (ISA) Summit to be held in New Delhi tomorrow to
promote solar energy. The summit will be attended by the heads of state from 23 nations, including
France, Australia and Sri Lanka.

5 Asian Development Bank, International Solar Alliance sign pact to promote solar
energy
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the International Solar Alliance (ISA) today signed a
cooperation arrangement to promote solar energy deployment in Asia and the Pacific. The cooperation
envisages solar power generation, solar based mini-grids, and transmission systems for integrating solar
energy into grids, among others. The ISA and the ADB would also cooperate on knowledge sharing and
developing technology roadmaps for the promotion of solar energy, the multilateral lending agency
said in a statement.
