Narwhals are a kind of whale that not many people have ever seen. That’s because they live in the
coldest waters on Earth, the Artic Ocean. This sea water is so cold that much of it has turned into ice.
Narwhals eat fish that live on the ocean floor and can dive 1,500 metres to find their prey. It’s very cold down
there, but the narwhal’s body is built to withstand extremely cold temperatures.
Narwhals are smaller than other whales but they are still large. They can weigh up to 1,600 kilograms
and are 4 to 5 metres long. They are usually white and black. As they get older, their skin get lighter. Narwhals
have something very special. Each narwhal has a tusk that grows straight out into a spear. These tusks can be
over 2 metres long. These long, sharp tusks make the narwhal look much longer.
Narwhals have been used as food by people for a long time. For native people in the Far North called
Inuits, they are a good source of fat during the cold winters. Inuit people used to hunt them with spears from
small boats. Now, they have a different way of hunting them. Many use modern motorboats to chase them
and rifles to kill them. When a narwhal is caught, the entire whale including its tusk is used. The narwhal’s tusk
is a very valuable possession.

Harry Potter
The idea for the book Harry Potter and the
Philosopher’s Stone came to Joanne Kathleen Rowling in
1990. It took her seven years to finish writing it. During
those seven years she had a number of jobs, including one
job as an English teacher in Portugal.
Rowling sent the book to four publishers before
one of them bought it. She was very happy to sell her
book because it was her life’s dream to be a writer. Before
she sold her book, Rowling was living in a small apartment
with her daughter and was very poor. She could not
afford heat in the winter.
Harry Potter became very successful with children and adults in England. The book also
really took off in the United States. After her second and third books were published, the three
Harry Potter books filled the top three places on many newspapers’ lists of best-sellers. Then the
books were made into popular movies. Rowling’s life had completely changed, in just three years.
Harry Potter has now sold more than 30 million books around the world and has been
translated into more than thirty-five languages. In 1997, she earned £70 (about US$110) a week.
