“Gender Awareness and Development”

INTRODUCTION

Nowadays we talk about the issue of sexuality, so as we look forward to the

study of knowing the gender awareness and development, as a college student we realize

that the issue of gender fair here in our country is very important.

Gender inequality in society is a genuine issue of concern to the international

community. As global awareness is believed to be the key to improving the situation of

both men and women, it is also considered to be the most significant means for achieving

gender equality and women's empowerment.

The cooperation between international organizations and national governments

on the issue of gender equality is increasing, and the focus is to advance and improve

women's conditions as well as their societies (Belal, 2009).

In the Philippines, the pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment has

achieved major inroads in the past decades. The gender responsive laws, policies, and

programs in place and the institutional and enabling mechanisms in national government

agencies and local government units are a result of the continuing advocacy of

government and its partners among lawmakers, people’s organizations, civil society

groups, and the academe (Women’s EDGE Plan 2013–2016, 2014).

Human sexual development has not kept up with our preference to have more

education, financial security, and life experience before marrying. On the contrary, the

time gap between sexual maturities is the highest it’s ever been. In response, evangelicals

muster popular perspectives on courtship and what clothes can and cannot come off and
when. The lack of an authoritative message about sexuality is not lost on youth. Many

don’t mind that there is no shared story about gender. It makes the lowest common

denominator easy to abide by. Gender awareness will always be alluring. Education, after

all, does what it’s supposed to understand. It bonds. It makes us want more: more

relationship, more security, and more understanding. That is the reality of its unchanging

nature according to the gender development.

Today, Gender awareness and development is associated with everything. You

cannot walk down the street or turn on the radio without seeing and hearing about the

issue of Gender. A good network television show must have Gender in order to compete

in prime time. A movie must have Gender, No sex? No Development. Anna Kournikova,

the most marketable woman sports figure in the world has yet to win a tournament, but

according to the million dollar endorsements corporations throw at her it is obvious that

her Gender appeal is far more intriguing and important than her serve; the public agrees.

We as a society are obsessed with Gender identity. However, we have become so

desensitized to it that it is no longer viewed as something wrong.

It graphically showcases samples of women’s advancement in politics, academic

and professional excellence, and even legislation. But this is contrasted by images of

prostituted women, battered wives, economically disadvantaged women and exploited

migrant workers. As such, there is still a need to propagate gender equality and women’s

empowerment to the widest audience as possible Awareness that development has a

gender dimension began emerging in the international community in the late 1970s

following International Women’s Year (1975). Gender and Development (GAD) as an

alternative development.
DISCUSSION

Last January 28, 2018 the Guidance and Counseling of OLSCHO had a Seminar about

Gender Awareness and development (GAD). The participants of said program are Senior High

School and College students and the speaker in this event none other than Mr. Argel B.

Manansala from Central Luzon State University.

The main topic according to the discussion is the Sexual Orientation and Gender

Identity and Expression Equality, known as the SOGIE. It recognizes the fundamental

right of every person regardless of sex, age, class, status, ethnicity, color, disability,

religious and political beliefs, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression, to be

free from any form of discrimination.

Sogie is also passed by the law, the bill would make it illegal to publish “information

intended to ‘out’ or reveal the sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity of a person without their

consent, when such has not been made known by the person concerned, and has been made with

malicious intent or is primarily motivated by a desire for commercial profit.”

The bill would also make it illegal to engage in public speech, except religious speech,

meant to shame, insult, vilify, or which tends to incite or normalize the commission of

discriminatory practices against LGBT COMMUNITY, and which acts or practices in turn,

intimidate them or result in the loss of their self-esteem.


REFLECTION

The gender awareness and development and family background of adolescents

have significant impact on Gender Orientation of young people while age grouping has

impact on gender equality.

The seminar discussed by Mr. Argel B. Manansala the Gender-role development

is one of the most important areas of human development. The moment a women finds

out she is pregnant she is often anxious to find out the sex of her child.

In this seminar which had the terms “sex” and “gender” need to be understood. The

term “sex” denotes the actual physical makeup of individuals that define them as male or

female. Sex is determined by genetic makeup, internal reproductive organs, the

organization of the brain, and external genitalia.

The behavior of individuals as males or females, the types of roles they assume,

and their personality characteristics, may be just as important as a person's biological

framework. In order to differentiate between biological features one may take into

consideration behaviors and social roles to establish “gender” masculine (men) and

feminine (women).

Sex and gender are often intertwined, and certain social expectations can be

attributed to ones biological sex. The sex of a newborn sets the agenda for a whole array

of developmental experiences that will influence the person throughout our life.
Overall, the sex differences between boys and girls in the first year of life are

minimal. Boys may be a bit more active or fussier and girls more physically mature and

less prone to physical problems, but that may be the extent of the significant differences.

Mothers have a tendency to ignore more of their son's emotional outbursts in comparison

to their daughters' outbursts. Boys may be rough-housed or played with in a more

aggressive manor as well. This goes in line with stereotyping males as more hardy or

tough and girls as gentle and soft.

Our parent can influence their child into these gender roles by the way they

discipline their child. They may be harder on a boy than a girl for the exact same

behavior.
