Texts: Steven Sternberg: Air Pollution: Engineering, Science and Policy, College Publishing
ISBN/Print: 978-1-932780-07-9
ISBN/ebook: 978-1-932780-08-6

or

C. David Cooper and F.C. Alley, Air Pollution Control: A Design Approach, 4th Edition

Note: The Sternberg text has more detail on regulation and impacts of various pollutants.
It is a good book if you main interest is policy. It does have design info, but not to the
extent of Cooper and Alley. The Cooper and Alley gives good design details, and a good
book if you are interested in process engineering. It is lighter on the regulation and
effects. Either book will work for this course.

Other Useful Sources of Information

Kenneth Wark, Cecil F. Warner, and Wayne T. Davis, Air Pollution: Its Control and
Origin, 3rd Edition (supplement)
Robert Jennings Heinsohn and Robert Lynn Kabel, Sources and Control of Air Pollution
deNevers, Nevil, Air Pollution Control Engineering, 3rd Edition

Objective: To enable engineers to understand natural and anthropogenic sources of air pollution,
their impact on health and the environment, and learn ways to prevent or minimize
pollution by the application of control practices. Broad areas of interest to be covered
include:

 the effects of pollutants on health and welfare;

 the laws and regulations that have been promulgated in an attempt to achieve and
maintain acceptable ambient air quality;
 the modeling of atmospheric dispersion of pollutants; and
 the general and specific approaches to the control of particulate and gaseous
emissions
Topics:
Air Pollution Effects
Legislation and Regulation
Emission Factors
Air Pollution Measurements
Meteorology and Atmospheric Dispersion Modeling
CO2 Emissions and Global Climate Change
Particulate Emissions and Control
Reactive Carbon Compound / VOC Control
Hazardous Air Pollutants / Mercury and others
Sulfur Oxide Control
Nitrogen Oxide Control

Course Structure: This course consists of lecture periods which will be taught simultaneously with ChE
404, Air Emissions and Regulation

Grading:
Periodic Exams (3@100) 300
Homework (10 @ 10 pts) 200 (they look like a lot of work so will double value
Total ChE 504 600

Grade Total Points

A > 90%
B 80 – 89%
C 70 – 79%
D 60 – 69%
F < 60%

Assignments:
 Assignments are due before you take the exam for that section. Suggest dates are given below.
They should be submitted electronically through Balckboard. Let me know if you don’t see an
upload link – as it will mean I messed it up.
 Reading assignments due BEFORE material is discussed in class
 I have set up the summer course to be self-paced. The homework should be submitted before you
request the exam from that section.

Students with Disabilities: If you have emergency medical information to share with the instructor, if
you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, or if you need accommodations in
this course because of a disability, please make an appointment with the instructors. If you plan to request
disability accommodations, you are expected to register with the Disability Support Services (DSS) office
(190 McCannel Hall, 777-3425).

Non-discrimination statement: As part of its commitment to providing an educational environment free

from discrimination, UND complies with Title IX of the Education Amendments, which prohibits
discrimination and harassment based upon sex in an institution’s education programs and activities. Title
IX prohibits sexual harassment, including sexual violence, of students at UND-sponsored activities and
programs whether occurring on-campus or off-campus. Title IX also protects third-parties, such as
visiting student athletes, from sexual harassment or violence in UND’s programs and activities and
protects employees from sexual harassment and discrimination. Prohibited harassment includes acts of
verbal, nonverbal or physical aggression, intimidation or hostility based on sex, even if those acts do not
involve conduct of a sexual nature; sex-based harassment by those of the same sex; and discriminatory
sex stereotyping. UND will take prompt action to investigate and resolve reports of sexual harassment or
sexual violence in accordance with Title IX. UND’s Title IX coordinator is Donna Smith, Director of
Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action, 401 Twamley Hall, 264 Centennial Drive Stop
7097, Grand Forks, ND 58202-7097, 701-777-4171, [email protected]. Retaliation against any
person who initiates an inquiry or complaint or participates in the investigation of a complaint is
prohibited. Such conduct will be further cause for disciplinary action.
Course Timing:
I have structured the course to be self-paced for the summer. The table below provides a
suggestion of what will be needed to stay on track. The three exams will be take home and
administered upon your request.
