Read the story below and answer the questions that follow.
Once, a young man roamed the dessert feeling very thirsty. To his luck, he came across a
spring. He drank his fill of the spring water gratefully. The water tasted delightfully sweet, and he
suddenly thought of his wise old teacher in his village, who had been very kind to him. He wanted to
share the sweetness of the water with his teacher, so he filled his leather flask with the spring water.
Four days later, the young man reached his village. He visited his teacher and gave the water
to his aged teacher. The teacher drank from the flask and smiled warmly. ‘It is indeed very sweet.
Thank you very much, child.’ Hearing that, the young man left, feeling very happy.
Later, the teacher let another student to taste the water. He spat it out in shock. It apparently
had become stale because of the old leather flask. ‘Teacher, the water tasted awful! Why did you
pretend to like it?’
The teacher replied, ‘You only tasted the water. I tasted the gift. The water was simply the
container for an act of loving kindness and nothing else could be sweeter.’
