Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Shayna Johnson Date: 4/28/18

Grade and Topic: Grade 1 Geometry Length of Lesson: 45 minutes/ 2 Days

Mentor Teacher: Brenda Monday School: Brighton Elementary

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

Grade 1 Geometry/ Reason with Shapes and Their Attributes
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
 Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining
attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.
 Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-
circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right
circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.1
 Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the
words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the
whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal
shares creates smaller shares.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.G.A.1
 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.G.A.2
 CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.G.A.3
MATERIALS:
● White board
● Expo markers
● Construction paper
● Glue
● Pencils
●Construction paper cutouts of shapes
●Shapes worksheet
●IXL practice website https://www.ixl.com/math/grade-1/name-the-two-dimensional-shape
●Learning Shapes Video on youtube.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uIjdI0qbi8
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
● Learning the 2-demensional shapes
● Discussing the different attributes that the different shapes have
● Drawing 2-demensional shapes
● Dividing circles into halves and fourths
● “Triangle has 3 sides”
● “Rectangles and squares both have four sides, but a square has four EQUAL sides”
● “A circle is a shape with no sides,”
● Students will use the previous knowledge of different shapes to help them identify which are which.
● Allowing students to continue to learn new shapes.
● Students will also learn congruence and similarity in the future lessons.
● It is important to plan differentiated activities so that each student and learning type has an equal chance
to gain the knowledge needed.
● PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
● Introduction: Students will be given a shapes handout that should take roughly 15 minutes. .
● Procedures:
● The teacher will collect the handouts, and observe what the students already know.
● The teacher will then begin the lesson.
● The teacher and the learner will go over the different shapes and their attributes that they saw on the
handout.
● The teacher will discuss how they are alike and how they are different.
● The teacher will then show them the video to further increase their knowledge and take advantage of the
visual aspects of the video. This will serve as the first of two online aids in this subject/lesson.
● This lesson will take roughly 1 hour.
● The video will be shown in class (10 minutes)
● Some key questions:
- “What shape has three sides?”
- “How many sides does a circle have?”
● Closure: The teacher will hit a few more key points that she has made during the lesson. The students
will then be given time to go to the computer and do the math practice on the website listed above (this
will serve as the second online aid for this lesson). Students will also be presented with the opportunity
for a small prize for accumulating a certain amount of practice points at home or during recess time if
they so choose.
● Students will then be given the task to create their own robot using the shapes they have learned.
- Paper cutouts will be provided.
- This artwork will be hung up around the room.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
● The goal of this lesson is for the learner to be able to distinguish and draw different two-dimensional
shapes.

MODIFICATIONS:
● Students that do not master this objective will be pulled into a small group for further instruction by the
teacher and the peers that have fully mastered the skill.
● Students that are ready for enrichment activities will be given access to harder practice problems in
order to increase and challenge their learning.

This lesson will lead into the next section of the standards (halves and fourths) upon mastery of
distinguishing and drawing the shapes.
