Procedure:
Electrical Eng. Lab
Subject code AEI 2211/AEI 2221
 Ensure that the variac is switched off and that it is fully turned anticlockwise.
Measure between the output points of the variac with your voltmeter to confirm
that there is no power on the variac
 Connect the circuit as shown above. But we must place the Wattmeter across the
supply.
NB UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY THE POWER BE SWITCHED ON UNTIL A LECTURER HAS
CHECKED AND APPROVED THE CIRCUIT CONNECTIONS!

 Switch on the power and increase the voltage slowly to a point where the current
flowing in the circuit is 0.7 A.
 Record all the values i.e. input current, the input voltage, the voltage across the
resistor R, coil XL, True power, Capacitor bank and the resistor.
 Also measure the voltage across terminal A and B, and record the value.
 When measuring voltage, the voltmeter must be connected across the
circuit.
 When measuring current, you must break the circuit and the current
meter must be inserted into the circuit (in series).

Phasor Diagram

Discussion

 The calculations are almost accurate because we used true values.

 The resistivity of the coil is a constant* (if the temperature remains constant).
 We are able explain and identify various ways on how Xl is measured.
Electrical Eng. Lab
 WeSubject code AEI 2211/AEI 2221
use Geometry/Pythagoras to calculate the true values of the internal
resistance of the coil
 To draw, interpret and do calculations on waveforms of RL voltages and current.
(Sinusoidal and complex waveforms)
 Explain what happens to the voltage-current relationship, when an alternating
supply is applied to Series combinations of pure resistances, inductors.

Conclusion

 The phasor diagram makes the calculations to make perfect senses.

 The frequency has an effect on the Inductance and Capacitants

 The value of the internal resistance in an Inducture remains constant provided the

temperature remains constant.
