Filipinos have the ability to speak English rather fluently because of their American influences. For a
time, the Philippines was under American rule, and so the Filipino people are able to learn the English
language by heart.
1. Many educated Filipinos go to other countries without much problems, except for having to be
exposed to the accents, which is experienced even by native English speakers going to another English-
speaking country.
This has, in fact, elicited controversies since English is not at all the national language of the
country. Needless to say, English subjects are being taught in schools across the nation. In grade
school, kids are taught the American Alphabet, and how to read English as well. Grammar and
correct sentence structure are emphasized early on. The highly advanced schools have speech
laboratories which provide an ideal environment for students to practice speaking well,
especially in public. With these kinds of training alone, it isn’t surprising to find most Filipinos
becoming good communicators and writers of the English language.
3. Globalization
Globalization is the process of international integration arising from the interchange of world
views, products, ideas and other aspects of culture.
We are all a part of something global, not local anymore. One clear example is the OFW, or
overseas Filipino worker, where many of the jobs available to them require them to speak
English fluently not only with customers but with colleagues and managers.
Many nurses, for example, have to pass an IELTS (International English Language Testing
System) score of at least a 7 so that they can apply abroad. The American Institute for English
Proficiency in Makati and Quezon City have been helping nurses achieve high scores so that they
can reach their dreams of migrating and working abroad.
4. Tourism
Tourism is one of our biggest industries here in the Philippines, and you will always see
foreigners in Manila, at the tourist spots, in taxis, and wherever you turn your head. Business
would rather employ someone who can deal with them effectively.
5. Industries Based on English
The abundant supply of English speakers and competitive labor costs have enabled the
Philippines to become a choice destination for foreign companies wishing to establish call
centers and other outsourcing operations.
An influx of foreign students, principally from South Korea, has also led to growth in the number
of English language learning centers, especially in Metro Manila, Baguio City and Metro Cebu.
English is a universal language. The world has changed. We can no longer live alone in our
country anymore. If you want to learn the world you need to learn English.
These are only a few of the reasons why Filipinos really need to improve more on English
skills. In reality, knowing and speaking English well can get you farther than you can ever
imagine. Filipinos who speak better English have so many advantages over those who do not
speak English well, and by being aware of the advantages, it should inspire someone to improve
his or her English speaking skills.
