FOURTH LONG TEST

POINTERS
PERIODIC TABLE
developed by Dmitri Mendeleev, a Russian chemist (1869)
Parts/Ways of arrangement
Periods ----- vertical
7 periods
Families/Groups ----- horizontal
18 columns based on the Periodic Table
BUT 8 well known families
1. Alkali Metal
2. Alkali Earth
3. Boron Family
4. Carbon Family
5. Nitrogen Family aka Pnictogens
6. Oxygen Family aka Chalcogens
7. Halogen Family
8. Noble Gases
and Transition metal family
Lanthanide series aka lanthanoids (Elements 58 - 71)
Actinide series aka actinoids (Elements 90 - 103)

Blocks ---- grouping of several adjacent families

4 blocks
 s Alkali + Alkali Earth
 p Boron Family to Nobles Gases
 d middle part of the periodic table
 f lower part of the periodic table
ELEMENTS
Types
1. Metal
found at the left of the zigzag; They tend to be lustrous, malleable, ductile, and
good conductors of heat and electricity.
2. Non metal
found at the right of the zigzag; These are dull, brittle substances that are poor
conductors of heat and electricity.
3. Metalloids
found along the zigzag;
These have some characteristics of metals and some of nonmetals.
For instance, silicon looks shiny, but is brittle and fairly poor conductor.

LOCATING ELEMENTS
Locate or identify element based on the description of:
period number
group number
block it belongs
name of family
physical characteristics

MUST!
Be familiar with the symbol and the corresponding name of the
element.

‘’Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.’’

- Benjamin Franklin
