ASSIGNMENT II, PI/PD 311 (WAVES & ACOUSTICS)
SPRING SEMESTER, 2018

1. a vibration is given by X = (10mm) cos ω0 t + (15mm) sin ω0 t. Calculate

the following:
(a) the amplitude
(b) the phase constant
(c) the complex amplitude

2. During a vibration with a frequency of 50 Hz, the displacement is observed

to be 30 mm at time t = 0, and 1 mm at t = 10ms. Find the complex
amplitude.

3. What are angular vibrations? Discuss the followings with examples:

(a) Torsional Vibrations
(b) Acoustic Vibrations
(c) Plasma Vibrations
(d) Molecular Vibrations

4. Find the analogous quantities of the followings for an electrical circuit.

(a) Displacement of mass (b) Velocity of mass
(c) Acceleration of mass (d) Mass
(e) Stiffness (f) Resistance
(g) Force applied by a spring (h) Drag force
(i) Force that accelerates the mass (j) Potential Energy
(k) Kinetic Energy

5. An wall clock ticks once per second. Show that it must be at least 1m
high.

6. A watch ticks 10 times per second. Its balance wheel has a moment of
inertia 2 × 10−6 kg m−2 . Assuming the period is 2 ticks, find the torsional
stiffness of the balance spring.

7. A mass m suspended vertically on a spring of stiffness s. The other end

of the spring is fixed. Show that the vibrations have angular frequency
(s/m)1/2 .

8. An astronaut on the surface of the moon weighs rock samples using a

spring balance. The balance was calibrated on earth and it has a 10 cm
long scale which reads from (0 – 1.0) kg. A certain rock gives a steady
reading of 0.4 kg, and when disturbed, vibrates with a period of 1.0 s.
Using the information, calculate the acceleration due to gravity on the
moon.

9. Consider a vibration with mass 0.02 kg and stiffness 35N m−1 .
(a) What value of the damping constant would make the amplitude
decrease to 1/e of the initial value in 1.0 s.
(b) What is the Q-value of such a system?
(c) What value of the damping constant would produce critical damping?

10. Show that a lightly damped vibrating system loses approximately 2π/Q
of its energy during each cycle.

11. A capacitor is charged to a voltage V , and is then connected across a

coil. If the damping is critical, show that the current rises to a maximum
value 2V /eR. R is the total resistance of the circuit made by the coil and
the capacitor.

12. A very heavily damped system has a relaxation time of 0.1 s. In steady-
state forced vibration at a frequency 0.1 Hz, it has an amplitude of 20
mm.
(a) If the driving force frequency is increased to 7.0Hz but the maximum
force is unchanged, what is the new steady-state amplitude?
(b) What is the new phase constant?

13. For forced oscillations in an LCR circuit, show that the voltage across
the capacitor at low frequencies (ω ω0 ) and the voltage across the
inductance at high frequencies (ω ω0 ) are both equal to the generator
voltage.

14. (a) A simple pendulum is set into vibration with an amplitude of 45◦ .
Calculate the frequency in terms of ν0 .
(b) The amplitude gradually decreases as a consequence of light damping
by the air, and so the frequency gradually rises towards the value ν0 .
Calculate the amplitude when the frequency is 0.99ν0 . (Assume that the
damping affects the frequency only by changing the amplitude.)
