Lesson 3 - Islamic Beliefs
Explain the significance of the Qur’an and the Sunnah
Goal  as the primary sources of Islamic beliefs, practice, and
law, and their influence in Muslim daily life.

Muslim’s believe in the same god we believe in.


Background  Muslims also believe in Jewish and Christian prophets.
Information  Muslims also believe that Muhammad revealed the
purest vision of god’s truth.

Is the word of god. It is the record of 22 years of


revelations. First revelation was in a cave outside of
The Qur’an  Mecca in 610. He died in 632. Inside the Qur’an are
laws, morals, what a family means, the creation of the
world, about god, and that you have a soul.

The Qur’an, Bible, and Torah are holy books. The


Qur’an is the holiest book in Islam. Muhammad’s
Sacred Text 
followers memorized what Muhammad said. The
Qur’an has about 114 chapters.

Is traditions of the prophet. They believed that


Muhammad talked to God. So, he was a perfect model.
Muhammad recited words and practiced actions. A lot
The Sunnah 
of the stuff in the sunnah are laws. Theocracy has a
government religion. Examples are Iran ad Saudi
Arabia.

Their is one god. God created everything in the

Each person is an individual. You can choose between


The Soul and the  being good or bad. If you do something bad you go to
Afterlife  hell. God chooses where you live in the afterlife. If you
do not follow god’s laws you also end up in hell.

Recite the Qur’an. Carry a copy with them. Treat it


Islamic Practices  with devotion. The Qur’an must be studied in the
original language because it is a word of God.

There is no difference between your religious life and


daily life. There are laws about when to pray. This
goes of of the 5 pillars of Islam. Student’s should their
education by learning the Qur’an. Later on, students
Islamic Influence in  can study other stuff like: math, history, philosophy,
Muslim Daily Life   and laws. Muslim’s believe in giving to the poor. 1st
(3 slides)  class Arabs. 2nd class non Arabs. 3rd class Jews and
Christians. 4th class slaves. Men are supposed to
support the family. Women generally stay at home.
Polygamy is allowed which means that men can take
women.

(3 slides)  Pilgrimage. No god but the GOD. Must believe that


Muhammad was that messenger of god. You have to
pray 5 times a day. Almsgiving means Charity. In the
month of ramadan you fast for a month. Stop all
things that distract you from faith. Pilgrimage means
journey.
