What to do
Have your child solve the multiplication and division problems
on the activity pages. Review the answers with your child.
Remind your child that he or she can check the division problems
by multiplying. In the example 38 ÷ 6 = 6 remainder 2, multiply
6 × 6 + 2 = 38. Your answer is correct! An answer key is
provided at the back of the book for your convenience.
Keep On Going!
Show your child that math can be fun by playing a
multiplication/division game together. Give your child a
multiplication problem and have him or her solve it and then
turn it into a division problem to check the answer.
For example:
7 × 4 = 28
28 ÷ 4 = 7 or 28 ÷ 7 = 4

using a number line Date:
A number line can be used to help you multiply. One factor tells you how long each
jump should be. This is like skip-counting the other factor tells you how many jumps
to take.
2 × 6 = 12
×2
0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 22 24 26 28 30
3×3=9
×3
0 3 6 9 12 15 18 21 24 27 30
Use the number lines above to help you multiply by 2s and 3s.
When multiplying by 0, the product is always 0. When multiplying by 1, the product is always
the other factor.

Multiplication is repeated addition using equal groups. The numbers being multiplied
together are called factors. The answer is called the product.
Example
Charlie’s coach bought 3 bags of hockey pucks.
There are 4 pucks in each bag. How many pucks
did he buy altogether?
+ + = 12 pucks
3 × 4 = 12 pucks
factor factor product
There are 3 equal groups of 4 pucks.
1. Charlie’s team played 3 games. They 2. Charlie and his friend each have
scored 3 points in each game. How 4 hockey sticks. How many sticks
many points did they score in all? do they have?
(Draw a box for each point.)
On another sheet of paper, write your own word problem that involves repeated
addition using equal groups. Ask a friend to solve it by drawing a model.
