Introduction
This guideline enables dealers and their customers to benefit from cost reductions made possible
through an established parts reusability and salvage program. Every effort has been made to
provide the most current and relevant information known to Caterpillar Inc. Since the Company
makes ongoing changes and improvements to its products, this guideline must be used with the
latest technical information available from Caterpillar to ensure such changes and improvements
are incorporated where applicable.
For questions or additional information concerning this guideline, contact Caterpillar Service
Support Division, Dealer Support (309) 675-5156.
Summary
Installing new fuel system parts during a 3300 or 3400 Engine rebuild is often not necessary.
This guideline provides visual examples to help to determine if the part is reusable. Fuel system
parts used in the same application and meeting the Use Again specifications in this guideline, can
be expected to give normal performance until the next overhaul.
Never install a fuel system part that this guideline shows cannot be used again. During
reconditioning, correct any conditions that might have caused the original failure.

General Information
Camshaft Plugs
The 3406 NSFS Camshafts with cross-drilled oil passages, are assembled with either two
6V-5135 Setscrew (plugs), or one plug and a 7C-2658 Screen Assembly. Timing advance will not
function properly without one of these combinations. A 3406 NSFS Camshaft must be assembled
with different parts, depending on its intended application. The screen assembly can replace one
of the plugs for U.S. on-highway trucks and is used for noise reduction.
NOTICE
The 7C-2568 Screen Assembly is used in the following 3406B Truck Engines equipped with
injection pump groups; 7C-2616, 7C-3221, 7C-3222, 7C-3223, 0R-2876, 0R-2931, 0R-2932,
0R-2933, 0R-2934, 0R-2965. These parts are adaptable to 3406B Truck Engines with serial
numbers of 7FB55414-UP, 4MG1-4MG3599, and 5KJ1-UP. This applies only to replacement
truck engines, and truck engines certified previous to 1988 emission levels. These camshafts are
also used in 3406B Engines with serial numbers 2WB, 4TB, 6TB, 7XC, 4RG, 4JK, 9PL, and
4PM. It is also used in 3406C Engines with serial numbers 2AM, 4BM, and 4ZR. Refer to Chart
A for other applicable models.

The injection pump group part number is stamped on the top face of the injection pump housing.
If any of the listed part numbers are found, the 7C-2568 Screen Assembly and one 6V-5135
Setscrew are required. The 7C-2568 Screen Assembly should be tightened to 3 ± 1 N·m (27 ± 9
lb in). The 6V-5135 Setscrew should be tightened to 21 ± 7 N·m (16 ± 5 lb ft).

Pitting, spalling, and wear can occur on the lobes of the 4N-0599 and 4N-0602 Camshafts in the
fuel injection pump groups for 3408 and 3412 Engines respectively. This problem has been
found in the paths where the rollers for the 3S-9736 Lifter Assemblies travel over the camshaft
lobes.
Note: Do not reinstall a used camshaft with new 8N-6981 Lifter Assemblies unless the fuel
system was originally equipped with 8N-6981 Lifter Assemblies.
