This year marks the 100th anniversary of what is called the greatest spectacle in racing, the Indianapolis 500. The race at the famed Brickyard is considered by many to be the pinnacle in automotive racing, with the drivers, teams, and cars living on in racing legend. The race also showcases the pinnacle of another achievementvehicle engineering. The vehicles that zoom around the famed oval, reaching speeds of more than 200 mph (322 km/h), use some of the latest and most advanced technology available in the automotive world today. In fact, many of the engineering advancements developed for racing eventually are adapted for use in consumer production vehicles. In a recent conversation with Donald Davidson, Indianapolis 500 Historian, he highlighted the innovative engineering development of a variety of technologies that have occurred over the years. Starting with the first race in 1911 and the much referenced use of a rearview mirror by race winner Ray Harroun, to the development over the years of hydraulic brakes, tire design, spark plugs, suspension components, powertrains, car configurations, and aerodynamics, racing has
led the way in engineering technology. The innovation of safety components for car, driver, and track also are key areas that should be recognized where the engineering community has made significant contributions. Even at the century mark of the race, that innovation continues. This year also marks the 45th anniversary of an award that honors and celebrates that type of engineering excellencethe Louis Schwitzer Award. Schwitzer was an engineer who was influential in the development of hydraulics for use in bus transportation, pioneering improvement in automotive cooling fans, water pumps, oil pumps, and the turbocharger. He won the first automobile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a 5-mi (8km) race Aug. 19, 1909. Presented by the SAE International Indiana Section and sponsored by BorgWarner, the Louis Schwitzer Award recognizes individuals with the courage and conviction to explore and develop new concepts in motorsports technology. The list of Schwitzer Award winners is impressive and reads like a whos who of racing and racing innovation: Dan Gurney, A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Anthony Purnell, Bill Simpson,

Roger Allen, Paul Burgess, and Gian Paolo Dallara to name just a few. And the technology recognized is just as impressive. Recent award winners included the developers of the HANS device, the SAFER barrier, the Earpiece Sensor System, and the Accident Data Recorder 3. Winners of the Louis Schwitzer Award receive $10,000 in cash from BorgWarner, along with a $1000 scholarship from SAE International to the engineering school of the winners choice. Its important to note that SAE International doubles that scholarship amount if the winner is a past Formula SAE participant. Needless to say, there have been such winners in the past. Finally, the winners name is added to a permanent trophy on display at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum. There is no doubt that the Louis Schwitzer Award, along with SAE International and the SAE Indiana Section, has earned a special place in the tradition and history of the Indianapolis 500. Such a tradition never could have been started, however, if it was not for the support of BorgWarner that has helped to maintain the award over the years. That same type of support also extends throughout all of SAE Internationals programs. Corporation support, both financially and in terms of manpower and expertise, is the engine that drives this organizations vision and mission. This especially is true with regard to the work done by the SAE Foundation. Programs like A World In Motion help to teach students about the importance of math, science, and technology skillsthe building blocks of engineering. I urge all corporations, and the decision makers who help to guide them, to be generous in their giving to such worthy programs. Governance Update
Dr. David L. Schutt, SAE International Chief Executive Officer, presented the 2010 Annual Report. SAE International is proud of its rich heritage, having its origins in the nascent phases of the aerospace, automobile, and commercial vehicle industries. SAE Internationals programs, products, and services add unquestionable value to the engineer, the companies for whom they work, the mobility industry as a whole, and the society at large. 2010 proved to be a critical year in SAE Internationals ongoing transformation into the new economy. Having re-architected much of the organization in 2009 and having formed a new compact with the nowtransformed mobility industry, 2010 saw the society achieve fiscal stability and return to profitability. Throughout the year, the societys operations focused on improving member value and leveraging core competencies of technical standards and lifelong learning, with an emphasis on innovation and emerging technologies. Key highlights include the introduction of a new customizable member6

ship model, a redesigned SAE World Congress, and a whole suite of new information-based products. Vehicle electrification was a dominant theme throughout 2010. The 2011 Business Plan focuses on continued enhancements to membership, as well as strengthening our core and diversifying our revenue streams. The society will focus on the key market sectors of aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle industries. SAE International will deliver a contemporary value proposition through a highly relevant, 21st-century portfolio of programs, products, and services that is cost-effective, locally relevant, and locally valued. And we will actively engage in the emerging technologies relevant to the mobility enterprises regulatory and marketplace demands. Schutt concluded his report noting that 2010 clearly marked the beginning of the societys recovery and 2011 represents a confident step forward. Kleine, 2011 President, shared an overview of the goals he has defined for his year-long presidency. These were previously highlighted in the February 2011 issue of Update. An overview of the goals includes: Establishing SAE International as the go-to organization for the aerospace, automotive, and commercial

Writing an SAE technical paper offers worldwide reach and industry recognition.
Technical Papers. Moore noted that SAE collaborates with Elseviers Scopus and Compendex, two of the worlds largest databases for technical research literature. Compendex is the computerized version of the Engineering Index, a comprehensive engineering bibliographic database founded in 1884. Updated weekly, it currently contains more than 9 million records and references more than 5000 international sources. Additionally, publishing a paper provides the opportunity for further recognition via various tech-paper award opportunities.
part of SAEs Global Mobility Database of more than 73,000 technical papers dating back to 1906. Papers are also aggregated into the SAE Journalsthe years best of covering a range of topics. Available in print and online, the Journals increase the published materials eligibility for inclusion in global scientific indices. ganizations internal legal review processes related to approving technical manuscripts. This requirement is particularly common within the OEMs. Authors need to make sure this is done prior to SAEs manuscript review, she noted. Another caveat: Work, even in brief abstract form, must not be previously published, including on the Internet. Moores team often fields questions about paper length. She noted while there is no length requirement, SAE recommends 8-10 pages total, with enough supporting material to
prove stated conclusions. Author instructions can be found on the SAE International website; go to http://volunteers.sae.org. Click on Authors in the box. At the bottom of the page there are links to FAQs, templates, paper checklists and formatting tips, a style guide, and other information (including the editing process and peer review) that is essential for authors. Volts range-extended powertrain was noted by voters as being more practical for the times than a range-limited battery EV.
The readers and editors of SAE Internationals Automotive Engineering International (AEI) magazine have selected the 2011 Chevrolet Volt as the Best Engineered Vehicle of 2011. The announcement was made during the SAE 2011 World Congress, April 12-14, in Detroit. The selection of the Volt as the 2011 Best Engineered Vehicle by our peers is an honor, said Doug Parks, Vehicle Line Executive for the car. This award validates the hard work and effort of the engineering team

to deliver a truly transformational vehicle. The 2011 Best Engineered Vehicle award highlights the innovative engineering that resulted in the production of the worlds first electric vehicle with extended range capability. With a full charge, Volt drivers are able to go up to 40 mi (64 km) completely emissionsand gasoline-free and then continue for several hundred more miles. Complementing its groundbreaking propulsion system, the Volt offers an equally revolutionary design that

emphasizes a wheels-out, body-in stance to make a dynamic and sleek statement. Further, the aerodynamicists in GMs wind tunnel worked with the design and engineering teams to develop the most aerodynamic vehicle in Chevrolets history. By reducing the energy needed to overcome air resistance, the vehicles sleek design contributes an estimated 8 mi (13 km) of electric range and up to 40 mi (64 km) of extended range. SAE International membership chose from a list of candidates selected by the AEIs editorial team based around the world. Runners-up in the competition included the Nissan Leaf and the Hyundai Sonata. SAE membership selected the Best Engineered Vehicle based on the same criteria typically used in vehicle development programs: commonality, flexibility, cost, innovation, package efficiency, powertrain performance, chassis systems, interior accommodations, occupant safety, and engineering benchmark. This is the eleventh year of the Best Engineered Vehicle award. For the full article, read the April 5 print issue of AEI or visit this link. which lead to the death of 160 women and an additional 865 fetal losses. Unfortunately, up to this point, safety engineers did not have sufficient data on how to prevent injuries and deaths in accidents involving pregnant women. A new book released by SAE International changes that by providing readers with substantial analysis of pregnant occupant biomechanics.
Pregnant Occupant BiomechanicsAdvances in Automobile Safety Research, edited by Stefan Duma, covers a wider variety of topics in automobile safety research pertaining to pregnant occupant biomechanics. Understanding that the best way to protect the fetus is to protect the mother, given that maternal death has a near 100% fetal loss rate, the book gives safety engineers the ability to better protect pregnant female occupants. The book will be available in both hardcover and ebook editions that are available in a suite of formats that also are saved in a personalized elibrary hosted by SAE International. Given the relative frequency of accidents involving pregnant women, research is vital to safety engineers. The vast majority of fetal losses from car accidents

result from separation of the placenta from the uterus, or placental abruption, which accounts for nearly 80% of fetal losses in automobile crashes. Through detailed case studies as well as advanced dummy and computer model developments, progress is being made to design safer occupant restraints for pregnant women. Pregnant Occupant Biomechanics Advances in Automobile Safety Research provides substantial new analysis and summary data about pregnant occupant biomechanics and serves as a complete resource for issues relating to the pregnant occupant. The book is divided into six chapters which are authored individually by topic experts. The first three chapters cover female anatomy, injury inci-

Duma, is department head and professor of biomedical engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He was the founding director of the Center for Injury
Biomechanics, which has received funding from the NIH, CDC, NSF, DOT-NHTSA, DOD, and industry leaders including Ford, Toyota, and General Motors.
