FORMAT FOR RESEARCH PAPER (AP 403)

Word Limit- Approximately 10,000 words

1. Margins: Allow 1.5 inches for the left margin and one inch for the top, bottom, and right
margins. For a clean look along the left and right side of the page, justify all content. Take
special care to insure that illustrations, graphs, tables and pictorial materials do not extend
beyond top, bottom, or side margins. When necessary, reduce image size before importing
it to the page.

2. Spacing: 1.5 lines spacing of the text throughout. Hyphenation of words at the end of a
line is discouraged. Division is permitted to avoid short lines that end considerably more
than one inch from the right margin.

3. Pagination: Every page in the thesis or dissertation, except for the blank pages (in case
they have been used as chapter markers), must be assigned a page number. Numbers
should not appear on the title page of the document, on the title page of the appendices or
on the title page of the references. Numbers should appear on all other pages except the
abstract. For the rest the numbering format may be roman numerals or alphabets. Centre
page numbers at ¾th inch from the bottom.

4. Type Styles: Print must be letter quality. A single font style of size 12 must be used
throughout the text. As necessary, a smaller font size of 10 could be used in tables and
charts and for captioning of all figures, images, maps, charts, etc. Underlining in the text,
unless part of a formula or equation, is discouraged. For adding emphasis, use italics,
boldface or all caps. Italics may be used for quotations and words in foreign languages.
Times New Roman and Arial are recommended.

5. Formatting of front matter:

a. Title Page
b. Blank Page (page number does not appear)
c. Candidate's declaration
d. Acknowledgments
e. Abstract
f. Table of Contents (page iii or more, numbered in sequence)
g. List of Figures (dwgs., illustrations, graphics etc. to be numbered in sequence and
captioned along with the source below)
h. List of Maps (to be numbered in sequence and captioned along with the source below)
i. List of Plates (images to be numbered in sequence and captioned along with the source
below)
j. List of Tables (numbered in sequence and captioned along with the source below)
6. Suggested Format for the body of the paper: The content matter should be organized in
the following manner:

a. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
1.2 Research Questions
1.3 Methods (including Literature Survey)
1.4 Framework of Analysis

b. OVERVIEW OF CASE EXAMPLE

2.1 Relevance of chosen case example
2.2 Study and observations of the case

c. CASE ANALYSIS (should follow the framework of analysis)

d. CONCLUSIONS

e. APPENDICES: Appendices are used to present detailed information which, if included in

the text, would obstruct clear presentation of the paper. The name of the appendix
(Appendix A, etc.) should be placed in the centre of a blank page preceding the appendix or
on the top of the first page of each appendix. Materials placed in the Appendixes must meet
the same standards of pagination, margins, etc., as other parts of the document.

f. REFERENCES: The term "references" implies a list of sources used in preparation of the
document. All sources consulted shall find mention here along with those cited or quoted in
the manuscript.
For all references from various sources like books in print or online, journal articles whether
in print or electronic, individual papers of any conference proceedings, any national or
international standards, and reports by various institutions, maps, web pages/websites or
emails etc. should follow the Harvard system.
While writing the manuscript, all quotations should be referenced in parentheses,
mentioning the name of the author, year of publication and page no. The spacing should be
single. For example:
‘Mathematics provides a powerful universal language and intellectual toolkit for abstraction,
generalization and synthesis. It is the language of science and technology. It enables us to
probe the natural universe and to develop new technologies that have helped us control and
master our environment, and change societal expectations and standards of living.’(Simon
2004: p.11)
Multiple textual references should be indicated in chronological order. For example: "… As
Castells (1997: 60) has clarified..." / "… where urban-rural interaction has been most
intensive (Ginsburg, 1990; McGee, 1991; Zhou, 1991; Lin, 1997a).

References should be listed in full at the end of the article in alphabetical order and in the
following form:
Book :
Lefèvre, H. (1974) La production de l’espace. Anthropos, Paris.
Castells, M. (1996) The rise of the network society, the information age: economy,
society and culture. Vol I. Blackwell, Oxford UK & Cambridge USA.
