Business Description
Tyson is more than simply chicken. One of the largest US chicken producers, Tyson's Fresh Meats division makes it a giant in the
beef and pork sectors, as well. The company also offers value-added processed and pre-cooked meats and refrigerated and
frozen prepared foods (pizza crust, desserts, snacks). Its chicken operations are vertically integrated -- the company hatches the
eggs, supplies contract growers with the chicks and feed, and brings them back for processing when ready. Tyson's brands
include Tyson, Jimmy Dean, Hillshire Farm, Sara Lee, Ball Park, Wright, Aidells, and State Fair. Its customers include retail,
wholesale, and food service companies worldwide.

Strengths/Weaknesses (SWOT)
Helpful Harmful
to achieving the objective to achieving the objective
Strengths Weaknesses
Overview
Tyson Foods is one of the leading food companies in the world. The company is a largest global processor and marketer of chicken, beef
and pork, as well as prepared foods. Strong market position increases its bargaining power in the market and gives Tyson Foods an edge
over the competitors. However, intense competition could reduce the sales volume of the company and hamper its market position.
Strengths
Broad and Diversified Portfolio Reduces Business Risk
Tyson Foods operates in four main businesses namely Beef, Chicken, Pork and Prepared Foods. The company's integrated operations
consist of breeding and raising chickens, contract growers, feed production, processing, further-processing, marketing and transportation
of chicken and related allied products, including animal and pet food ingredients. Tyson Foods also processes live fed cattle and hogs and
fabricates dressed beef and pork carcasses into primal and sub-primal meat cuts, case-ready beef and pork, and fully-cooked meats. In
addition, the company produces value-added products such as hides and other varieties of meats. Tyson Foods also offers a range of
packaged food products, including pepperoni, bacon, pizza toppings, pizza crusts, flour and corn tortilla products, appetizers, desserts,
prepared meals, ethnic foods, soups, sauces and meat dishes, among others. Besides a diversified product portfolio, the company also has
a diversified stream of revenues. For FY2016, Beef segment contributed 38.1% of the total revenues, followed by the Chicken segment
(28.7%), Prepared Foods segment (19.3%) and Pork segment (12.9%). A broad and diversified portfolio of products not only enhances
market share of Tyson Foods across various markets, but it also limits the company's exposure to the risks associated with a particular
segment.
Tyson Foods serves a strong and wide clientele ranging from wholesalers, retailers, restaurants and institutional customers such as schools
and hospitals. The company's products are marketed and sold mainly to grocery retailers and wholesalers, meat distributors, warehouse
club stores, military commissaries, industrial food processing companies, chain restaurants or their distributors, live markets, international
export companies and domestic distributors who serve restaurants, foodservice operations such as plant and school cafeterias,
convenience stores, hospitals and other vendors. Additionally, sales to the military and a portion of sales to international markets are made
through independent brokers and trading companies. Furthermore, Wal-Mart Stores, the company's largest customer, accounted for
approximately 17.5% of the consolidated sales in FY2016. No other single customer or customer group represented more than 10% of
Tyson Foods’ FY2016 consolidated sales. The diversified distribution channels and revenue sources indicate lesser dependence on a few
customers, which, in turn, implies higher bargaining power in pricing and shelf-space decisions as compared to national and local retailers.
Tyson Foods is one of the world's largest processors and marketers of chicken, beef and pork, as well as prepared foods. The company
secured number one position in 2016 World’s Most Admired Companies list in the Food Production segment, released by a business
magazine. Tyson Foods was also named among the top 10 chicken producers in the US in 2016, by an industry source. Tyson Foods
Page 36
Dun & Bradstreet One-Stop Reports for Tyson Foods, Inc.
supplies meat and allied products to customers throughout the US and 115 other countries. The company holds 21% of market share in the
US chicken production. It also commands 24% market share of the US fed beef packers and 18% of the US pork production. The company
produces approximately one out of every five pounds of chicken, beef and pork in the US. Moreover, Cobb-Vantress, its wholly-owned
subsidiary, is the one of the leading poultry breeding stock suppliers in the world. Also, Tyson Foods holds a significant market share in
several prepared foods categories. It is the largest supplier of pepperoni and meat pizza toppings to the foodservice industry. Thus, a
strong market position increases the bargaining power of the company in the industry and gives it an edge over its competitors.
Weaknesses
Product Recalls Hamper Brand Image
Tyson Foods has recalled some of its products in recent times. For instance, in October 2016, the company voluntarily recalled 1,148
pounds, or 35 cases, of Tyson Fully Cooked Golden Crispy Popcorn Chicken sold to a single wholesale distributor in Illinois. The recall was
due to the presence of a piece of plastic in the packaging of one bag of the product. Tyson Foods recalled 5-pound bags of Tyson Fully
Cooked Panko Chicken Nuggets, sold at Costco locations across the US in September 2016. The recall also included a small quantity of 20-
pound cases of bulk Spare Time brand cooked nugget-shaped chicken breast pattie fritters with rib meat sold to a single wholesaler in
Pennsylvania. The recall was due to presence of small pieces of plastic in the nuggets. Earlier, in 2015, the company recalled
approximately 52,486 pounds of Tyson Any’tizers Fully Cooked Hot Wings Buffalo Style Chicken Wing Sections sold in 28-ounce retail
packs. Tyson Foods received complaints from the consumers that the product has bad odor. In 2014, the company recalled 5-pound bags
of frozen Tyson white meat chicken nuggets that were sold at Sam's Club locations across the US. The recall was initiated after few
customers found small pieces of plastic in the nuggets. Product recalls affect the customer confidence in Tyson Foods’ products and hurt the
company’s brand image.
Opportunities
Growing US Broiler Chicken Market
According to the USDA, the US poultry industry is the largest producer in the world and second largest exporter of poultry meat. The per
capita consumption of broiler chicken is expected to rise from 89.6 pounds in 2016 to 90.4 pounds in 2017. Tyson Foods is engaged in the
production, processing, marketing and distribution of fresh chicken and other prepared food items. The company’s Chicken segment
engages in breeding and raising chickens, and processes live chickens into fresh, frozen and value-added products. With its strong position
in the US, Tyson Foods is well positioned to benefit from the growing US broiler chicken market and increase its top line.
The US meat market is expected to grow in the next few years. The meat market consists of the retail sales of fresh meat (counter),
chilled raw packaged meat (whole cuts and processed), frozen meat, cooked meats (packaged and counter), and ambient meat. According
to MarketLine, the US meat market grew by 2.4% in 2015 to reach a value of USD199.5 billion. The US accounted for 21.7% of the global
meat market value during the same year. Further, the meat market in the US is expected to reach a value of USD215.3 billion by 2020, an
increase of 7.9% since 2015. Tyson Foods processes live cattle and market hogs and processes dressed beef and pork carcasses into
primal and sub-primal meat cuts and case-ready products. The Beef segment also engages in the sale of allied products such as hides and
variety meats. Therefore, the company, by further expanding its meat offerings, can leverage the growing end market to increase sales.
The US foodservice industry is expected to continue its steady growth in the next few years. The restaurant industry has witnessed
consistent growth in sales in the past few years. According to industry sources, the restaurant industry in the US is estimated to generate
sales of approximately USD800 billion in 2017, registering an increase of 4% over 2016. The growth is expected to be driven by increasing
acceptance of restaurant technology by the consumers; and development of food and menu trends based on concepts, rather than based
on ingredients. The company supplies pork and beef to food retailers, foodservice distributors, restaurant operators, hotel chains, and non-
commercial foodservice establishments such as schools, healthcare facilities, and the military and other food processors. Therefore, the
improved outlook for the foodservice sector would lead to better revenues for Tyson Foods.
Threats
Laws and Regulations
Tyson Foods' operations are subject to extensive federal, state and foreign laws and regulations by authorities that oversee food safety
standards and the processing, packaging, storage, distribution, advertising and labeling of its products. The company's facilities for
processing chicken, beef, pork, prepared foods and milling feed, and for housing live chickens and swine are subject to a variety of
federal, state and local laws relating to the protection of the environment, including provisions relating to the discharge of materials into the
environment. Tyson Foods' chicken, beef and pork processing facilities are participants in the government's Hazard Analysis Critical Control
Point (HACCP) program and are subject to the Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures and Public Health Security and Bioterrorism
Preparedness and Response Act of 2002. In addition, the company's chicken, beef, pork and prepared foods products are subject to
inspection prior to distribution, primarily by the USDA and the US Food and Drug Administration. Loss of or failure to obtain necessary
permits and registrations could delay or prevent Tyson Foods from meeting current product demand, introducing new products, building
Page 37
Dun & Bradstreet One-Stop Reports for Tyson Foods, Inc.
new facilities or acquiring new businesses. This, in turn, could affect its operating results adversely. Additionally, Tyson Foods is routinely
subject to new or modified laws, regulations and accounting standards. If the company is found to be out of compliance with applicable
laws and regulations in these or other areas, it could be subject to civil remedies, including fines, injunctions, recalls or asset seizures, as
well as potential criminal sanctions, any of which could have a significant adverse effect on its financial results.
Tyson Foods is engaged in the production and distribution of chicken, beef, pork, prepared foods and related allied products. Therefore,
any outbreak of animal diseases in livestock farming poses a potentially tough challenge for the company. The responsibility on part of
meat-processing companies like Tyson Foods might greatly increase due to outbreaks of certain livestock diseases. Disease can reduce the
number of offspring produced, hamper the growth of livestock to finished size, result in expensive vaccination programs and require in
some cases the destruction of infected livestock, all of which could affect its production or ability to sell and export its products. Any
disease outbreaks could lead to the imposition of costly preventive controls on imports in the company's export markets. This could also
lead to decreased demand for Tyson Foods’ products in the global market, including the US. Additionally, any future significant outbreak of
the disease could attract strict regulations from the government to destroy its hogs. Apart from incurring additional expense for the
disposal of destroyed hogs, the company will have to face several challenges like decreased sales and non-recovery of costs incurred in
raising or purchasing them.
The food markets are highly competitive and evolving. With the entry of more new players in this market, the current level of competition
is expected to further intensify in the near future, which may result in price reductions. The company competes with a broad range of food
products which are manufactured and distributed by companies with substantially greater financial, marketing and distribution resources.
The company competes with Hormel Foods, Smithfield Foods, Perdue Farms, and Conagra Brands, among others. If Tyson Foods is not
able to maintain the product quality and consumer loyalty, this intense competition could reduce the sales volume of the company, thereby
hampering its market position.
