LEARN HOW YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT IS EMPOWERING

FARMING FAMILIES TO TRANSFORM THEIR COMMUNITIES.
WINTER 2018 EDITION
Organizational Highlights
As we enter a new year, we want to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for your
investment in the work of Plant With Purpose. We are very encouraged by the growing impact
of our programs on the lives of the rural poor: families are rising out of poverty, restoring their
land, and giving back to their communities. The farmers we work with are also sharing their
skills with their neighbors, leading to an ever-widening circle of transformation.
Some specific organizational highlights include:
• The successful completion of the Planting for the Future Campaign, which enabled us to begin
work in the Congo and to double the number of farmers served, from 100,000 to 203,500, while
increasing our budget by only 30 percent.
• Increasing the number of Sustainable Development Groups (SDG’s) from 450 to 1,291.
• The completion of our triennial Impact Evaluation, which will enable us to better understand
the impact of our programs and continue to improve our ability to serve the poor.
• The Planting Hope Gala in September raised over $400,000 and helped spread awareness
about our programs.

Burundi
TURNING CHALLENGES INTO OPPORTUNITIES: 2017 brought
continued risk and insecurity to Burundi with its history of conflict.
However, the Plant With Purpose team and partnering farming fam-
ilies are resilient and creative, turning challenges into opportunities.
One such example is a partnership between Plant With Purpose and
the World Food Programme, through which entire communities can
earn food by planting trees. The goal is to provide a path for families
to become more resilient in the face of ongoing food shortages and

THE RESULTS ARE IN!: In July, Plant With Purpose completed a
a two-year impact evaluation of the pilot project in the Kakumba
watershed. The study concluded that families living in Kakumba
have cut their level of poverty by 57 percent. Families are moving
beyond subsistence farming and diversifying their farms and their
income sources. In just two short years, Kakumba has seen 47
percent of families planting native trees as opposed to two per-
cent in a comparison watershed. 65 percent of Kakumba families
have started an additional side business in the past year, and 95

percent were able to sell their crops. Now, Kakumba families have

times more likely to send their daughters to secondary school. We
celebrate with our partners in Kakumba!
Dominican Republic
CELEBRATING SELF SUFFICIENCY: 2017 marks the tenth anniversa-
ry of partnership for many communities in the border region between
the Dominican Republic and Haiti, where 97 percent of families are
engaged in SDG’s. Though this region has one of the highest poverty
rates in the country, seven communities are ready to graduate from
our program this year. To prepare them for long-term sustainability
and successful graduation, Plant With Purpose Dominican Republic
launched an innovative graduation preparation process. Staff members

impact of their local watershed on their lives and their community as a

participants along the path to transformation.

STAFF HIGHLIGHT: WILNER: Wilner was one of the first farmers that
Plant With Purpose partnered with in Fonds-Verrettes. He showed so
much expertise, enthusiasm, and innovation that he was eventually
brought onto the team. Wilner encourages families to practice sustain-
able agriculture in a way that will provide for future generations. He
says: “I am one of the first farmers that Plant With Purpose worked
with in this area. Now as a staff member I continue the work I did
before. I empower people to protect the environment. I tell everyone
about the importance of planting trees. If we plant more trees we will

Mexico
BUILDING RESILIENCE: Several earthquakes hit southern Mexico this
past September, including a magnitude 8.1 earthquake on September
7. These earthquakes destroyed entire communities and threatened
areas near Plant With Purpose’s partnering communities. In the midst
of these natural disasters, we are reminded of the importance of in-
vesting in environmental, economic, and spiritual restoration initiatives
that increase farmers’ resilience in the face of disasters. Plant With
Purpose’s holistic program equips families to develop safety nets and

Tanzania
PARTNERING IN INNOVATION: Beginning in July 2017, Plant
With Purpose Tanzania obtained local funding for a GoGreen Proj-
ect through CARE, which is making clean energy technologies,
such as solar lights and improved cooking stoves, available to local
women. We are excited for this endeavor, and for the success of
the local staff in securing additional support. Plant With Purpose
participants in Tanzania are likewise excited to adopt and imple-
ment more practices that improve the environment. It is through
such beneficial partnerships that Plant With Purpose strengthens

Thailand
SUSTAINABLE PROGRESS: Each aspect of Plant With Purpose’s
work seeks to promote sustainability within communities. Hilltribe
farming families in Thailand are gaining access to land and basic
rights, and improving their quality of life. Now, they no longer wor-
ry about the day to day. Instead they are investing in a sustainable
future. Partner Jah Cho says, “I teach my children to do good things,
and I’m involved in a leadership role at the community level and com-
munity forest level. When we talk about sustainability, we need to
talk about the past. If we don’t understand the past, we can’t look at
