Match background
• #EQUALGAME
This week, football fans watching UEFA Champions League matches in stadiums, online and on TV will witness the
premiere of the new UEFA RESPECT TV ads, called #EqualGame. The adverts feature Ada Hegerberg, Lionel Messi,
Paul Pogba, Cristiano Ronaldo and amateur players and will run throughout the season to promote inclusion, diversity
and accessibility in European Football with the motto "Everyone has the right to enjoy football, no matter who you are,
where you're from, or how you play."
More information on the campaign and on the advertisements can be found in the accompanying media release and
on the campaign website: www.equalgame.com.
AS Roma are back in the UEFA Champions League after a season away, and matchday one assignments do not
come much tougher than a visit from Club Atlético de Madrid.
• The Spanish side's last four campaigns have all ended in defeat by Real Madrid CF. They have won their group in
each of those seasons.
Previous meetings
• Atlético won both of the teams' only previous fixtures, posting 2-1 victories home and away in the 1998/99 UEFA
Cup quarter-finals. José Mari (13) and Roberto (46) scored for Atlético in the home first leg, with a Luigi Di Biagio
away goal (75) giving Roma hope for the return.
• The hosts were level on aggregate 32 minutes into the Stadio Olimpico return through Marco Delvecchio, but Juan
Carlos Aguilera levelled on the night on the hour and Roberto's second goal of the tie (88) gave the Spanish club
another 2-1 victory and a 4-2 aggregate success.
Match background
Roma
• Second in Serie A in 2016/17, Roma are in the group stage for a tenth time and the third in four years.
• The Italian side were beaten by FC Porto in last season's play-offs (1-1 away, 0-3 home). They got as far as the
UEFA Europa League round of 16, where they were defeated 5-4 over two games by Olympique Lyonnais.
• That Porto reverse means Roma have won just one of their last seven home games in the UEFA Champions League
– qualifying included – losing four.
• Roma are also without a win in six UEFA Champions League matches, home and away and including qualifying,
since a 3-2 home victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 4 November 2015. That is their only success in their last 15
games in the competition.
• The Serie A team's last encounter with Spanish opposition ended in a 1-0 home defeat by Villarreal CF in last
season's UEFA Europa League round of 32 second leg – although Roma went through, having prevailed 4-0 in Spain.
• Roma's overall record against Spanish clubs is W10 D4 L14; at home it reads W6 D1 L7. They are without a win in
three home fixtures with Liga sides at the Stadio Olimpico, since a 2-1 scalp of Real Madrid in the 2007/08 round of
16.
Atlético
• Third in Spain in 2016/17, Atlético only missed out on becoming the seventh team to win all six matches in a UEFA
Champions League group when they went down 1-0 at FC Bayern München on matchday six last season.
• Diego Simeone's men went on to reach the semi-finals, but a 3-0 first-leg reversal at Real Madrid proved too much
to retrieve despite a 2-1 second-leg success in the last European game to be played at the Vicente Calderón.
• Atlético won two of their three away fixtures in last year's group stage, but have managed just three victories in their
last nine UEFA Champions League away matches (D2 L4).
• Atlético are unbeaten in their last three trips to Italy, most recently a 0-0 draw at Juventus on matchday six in
2014/15. Their record away to Italian clubs is W4 D2 L4; overall it is W13 D3 L7.
Coach and player links
• Simeone played for SS Lazio between 1999 and 2003, winning a league and cup double in his first campaign.
Simeone also met Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco in two Rome derbies in 1999/2000, a 4-1 defeat and a 2-1 win
for Lazio.
• Simeone also played for AC Pisa (1990–92) and FC Internazionale Milano (1997–99) and coached Calcio Catania
(2011) in Italy. His son Giovanni is at Fiorentina and could face Di Francesco's son, Federico, when his side play
Bologna FC next weekend.

Head coach
Eusebio Di Francesco
Date of birth: 8 September 1969
Nationality: Italian
Playing career: Empoli FC, AS Lucchese-Libertas, Piacenza FC (twice), AS Roma, AC Ancona, Perugia Calcio
Coaching career: SS Virtus Lanciano 1924, Pescara Calcio, US Lecce, US Sassuolo Calcio (twice), AS Roma
• A pacy winger known as 'Turbo', Di Francesco came through Empoli's youth system, making his Serie A debut in
1987/88. His career really took off at Piacenza between 1995 and 1997, when he earned himself a move to Roma.
Transformed into a midfielder by Zdeněk Zeman, he spent four seasons at the Stadio Olimpico, winning the 2000/01
Scudetto although he played only five games that campaign.
• Having retired in 2005 after two more seasons at Piacenza and spells with Ancona and Perugia, Di Francesco – who
won 12 caps for Italy – spent a year as a Roma director but the lure of coaching proved strong; that new venture
began in his native Abruzzo, first with a brief stint at Lanciano before two campaigns with Pescara.
• Was appointed Lecce coach ahead of 2011/12 for his first Serie A experience, though it proved brief as Di
Francesco was sacked after just 13 matches with his side bottom of the table.
• Dropped back into Serie B the following season; a huge Zeman fan, Di Francesco – named after Portuguese legend
Eusébio – had a brilliant start with Sassuolo using his mentor's 4-3-3 system and led the team from the Modena area
into Serie A for the first time.
• Di Francesco, whose son Federico plays as a winger for Bologna, coached Sassuolo in Serie A for four consecutive
campaigns, although the first featured a short interruption as he was replaced for five games by Alberto Malesani, only
to return and help the side avoid relegation. Known for his entertaining attacking football, Di Francesco steered
Sassuolo to a first UEFA Europa League qualification by finishing sixth in Serie A in 2015/16 before replacing Luciano
Spalletti as Roma coach in June 2017.
Diego Simeone
Date of birth: 28 April 1970
Nationality: Argentinian
Playing career: CA Vélez Sarsfield, AC Pisa, Sevilla FC, Club Atlético de Madrid, FC Internazionale Milano, SS
Lazio, Club Atlético de Madrid, Racing Club
Coaching career: Racing Club, Club Estudiantes de la Plata, CA River Plate, CA San Lorenzo, Calcio Catania,
Racing Club, Club Atlético de Madrid
• Launched career as a combative midfielder with Vélez Sarsfield and was a full Argentinian international at 18,
making debut in a July 1988 friendly against Australia; went on to play in three FIFA World Cups and retired as
Argentina's most-capped player (106 appearances, 11 goals). Moved to Italy in 1990 to join Pisa; two years later he
left for Sevilla, where he played under Argentina's 1986 World Cup-winning coach Carlos Bilardo and – for one
season – alongside Diego Maradona.
• Joined Atlético in 1994 and won the Spanish domestic double in his second season, his first major club honours to
add to two Copa América titles (1991 and 1993) plus the 1992 FIFA Confederations Cup with Argentina.
• Enjoyed further success after returning to Italy, winning the UEFA Cup with Inter, plus a Serie A and Coppa Italia
double in his debut campaign with Lazio (1999/2000). After four years in Rome, he returned to Madrid for a second
spell with Atlético before ending his playing career in Argentina with Racing Club.
• Started coaching career with Racing Club and won Argentinian titles with Estudiantes (2006 Apertura) and River
Plate (2008 Clausura); brief spells at San Lorenzo, Italian club Catania and Racing (again) preceded his appointment
in December 2011 at Atlético.
• Led Atletico to victory in the 2012 UEFA Europa League final against Athletic Club and to a Copa del Rey final
triumph over Real Madrid CF in 2013. A year later, Atlético held off FC Barcelona and Madrid to win their first league
title since 1996, although they lost to Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final. Took Atlético to another UEFA
Champions League final in 2016, although again they lost to Madrid.

Competition facts
UEFA Champions League: Did you know?
• In 2012/13, Chelsea became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA
Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that
featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and
lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to CSKA Moskva.
• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy, with
Milan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),
Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final
as holders only to lose.
• Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured
against Real Madrid on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest
outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens in 2006/07.
• Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years and 59 days, in Roma's 1-1 draw at
CSKA Moskva on 25 November 2014. Ryan Giggs (37 years 290 days) was the previous record holder.
• Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for
Anderlecht against Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.
• Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195
days. He found the net in Olympiacos's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg on 1 October 1997.
• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer Leverkusen
on 7 March 2012, a feat matched by Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at BATE Borisov on 21 October 2014. Eleven
more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently Cristiano Ronaldo for Real
Madrid CF on matchday six in 2015/16.
• Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsing his
own mark of nine goals in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17;
Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), Ruud van Nistelrooy (2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03)
managed eight.
• Messi's hat-trick on matchday three of the 2016/17 competition was his seventh in the competition, a record Ronaldo
matched against Club Atlético de Madrid in the 2016/17 semi-finals.
• Barcelona have finished as group winners on 18 occasions, three more than Real Madrid and four more than
Manchester United and FC Bayern München.
• Bayern München (2 April 2013 to 27 November 2013) and Real Madrid (23 April 2014 to 18 February 2015) jointly
hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with ten. Bayern surpassed the previous
mark of nine, set by Barcelona between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003.
• Six teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris
Saint-Germain (1994/95), Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid
(2011/12 and 2014/15).
• Nineteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, most
recently Club Brugge KV and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2016/17.
• Borussia Dortmund set a new group stage record by scoring 21 goals in 2016/17, eclipsing the old mark of 20 by
Manchester United (1998/99), Barcelona (2011/12, 2016/17) and Real Madrid (2013/14).
• Only Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05), Maccabi Haifa (2009/10) and Dinamo Zagreb (2016/17) have failed to score in
a group stage.
• BATE Borisov conceded 24 goals in 2014/15, a new record which was matched by Legia Warszawa in 2016/17. The
previous mark, 22, was held by Dinamo Zagreb (2011/12) and Nordsjælland (2012/13); Malmö FF shipped 21 in
2015/16.
• No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93),
Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06),
Manchester United (2010/11), Monaco (2014/15) and Paris Saint-Germain (2015/16) all let in just one.
• Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva
went 22 games without a victory in the competition, a mark Steaua Bucureşti surpassed on matchday six in 2013/14.

• RSC Anderlecht hold the unwanted record for successive defeats in the competition, group stage to final, having lost
12 in a row between December 2003 and November 2005. GNK Dinamo Zagreb are next with 11 consecutive losses
on two occasions, from September 2011 to December 2012 and again from 29 September 2015 onwards.
• The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is six points: Zenit in 2013/14 and AS Roma in 2015/16.
Since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, eight teams have made it through with seven points: Legia
Warszawa (1995/96), Dynamo Kyiv (1999/2000), Liverpool (2001/02), Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists
Juventus (both 2002/03), Rangers and Werder Bremen (2005/06) and Basel 1893 (2014/15).
• Napoli failed to qualify from their group with 12 points in 2013/14, the highest total of any team not to reach the next
stage when the top two in each section progressed. Dynamo Kyiv (1999/2000), Borussia Dortmund (2002/03 – both
second group stage), PSV Eindhoven (2003/04), Olympiacos and Dynamo Kyiv (both 2004/05), Werder Bremen
(2006/07), Manchester City (2011/12), Chelsea and CFR 1907 Cluj (both 2012/13), Benfica (2013/14) and FC Porto
(2015/16) all missed out with ten points.
• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in
Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months
later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
