was high, so Dave Hughes
gave his son a pep talk before
the game. Still, he didn’t
expect the weeping to start before the
quarter-time siren. A self-appointed
Adelaide Crows supporter, eight-year-old
Rafferty was nothing if not invested in
the event – so when his team’s fortunes
turned south, his dad (a mad Carlton
fan) went into damage control.
“We had some ‘coping cards’ which a
child psychologist gave us so we could
read them to him to get through the day,
like, ‘No matter what, they’re winners’,”
says Dave, “but they didn’t work and he
was bawling from about halfway through
the first quarter until we left just after
three-quarter time. He was crying so
much that he was louder than the tears of
the Richmond supporters – and they
hadn’t won a grand final for 40 years.”
If it sounds like he’s honing a stand-up
routine, he probably is. One of Australia’s

Tess armed with a Stormtrooper gun:
“She pointed at me and said, ‘Dad, do
you want to see Jesus?’”
Playing with his daughters, Tess and
six-year-old Sadie, usually involves a
high-stakes game of pretend. “They’ll say,
‘Dad, there’s a tsunami! We need to save all
the toys!” says the 47-year-old. “So I have
to fashion some sort of pulley system. Tess
and Sadie will be up on the balcony and I’ve
got to connect all their toys to the occy
straps so they can pull them up to safety.”
It’s all grist for the comic mill – so
much so that his wife of 11 years, Holly
Ife, has to preface the sensitive stories she
tells him, especially those involving the
kids’ friends, with a not-for-comedy
caveat. Dave can forget which things are
off-limits, though, so sometimes it’s best
not to tell him at all. Fortunately, his
family usually doesn’t mind the exposure;

Samuel Johnson
Australians fell in love with actor Samuel
Johnson years ago when his laconic voice
and cheeky humour came into our homes
through TV shows like The Secret Life of Us
and Molly. et despite his stellar acting career,
the best role this Logie award winning actor
has ever played is undoutedly the one that
has dominated his life off stage.
Samuel was named Victorian of the Year
after raising a staggering $7 million to fight
cancer through the Love Your Sister charity,
the organisation he established with his
adored sister Connie (pictured above with
Samuel) when she was given a terminal
breast cancer diagnosis.
Sadly, in September last year, 33-year-old
Connie, a mother of two young boys, lost her
battle but not before her brave journey and
the Love Your Sister community had become a
rallying point to raise funds to fight all cancers.
“She’d be really proud of me, but a bit
jealous too, she’d wonder why it wasn’t her!”
Samuel teases of his award. “Obviously, the

“I want to die having done more good

Barbara Spriggs
‘I’m just an ordinary, everyday Australian,’ says Barb Spriggs. Of course, this feisty
65-year-old is anything but. The South Australian was recognised as the state’s Senior
of the Year after waging a brave and relentless campaign to uncover the truth about
her late partner’s mistreatment at the Oakden mental health facility.
“One day I went to visit him, he had a tear running down his cheek, he was trying
to tell me something was wrong but couldn’t communicate. Then my daughter
discovered shocking bruises on his legs. When no one could explain to me why, I began
to ask questions,” she says. What she uncovered was heartbreaking. Bob, who suffered
Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, had been given 10 times the dose of his
medication, and was left lying on the floor to restrain him.
When Bob died, Barb pushed her grief aside and focused on finding the truth. With
the help of the Community Visitors Scheme, she made a formal complaint and received
an apology from the Health Department, but still no explanation as to exactly what had
happened at Oakden. So, the quest began. She wrote letters, made phone calls, then
applied through Freedom of Information for Bob’s files. The notes were damning.
“I couldn’t live with the thought that another family might go through what we’ve
been through,” she says. “We wanted something done.”
Barbara’s kitchen-table investigation led to a formal inquiry and a damning report
that detailed 10 years of abuse of patients. She uncovered systematic failures and
SA shocking treatment of vulnerable patients. The centre has since been closed.
Senior of “I’m very honoured to have received this award. It means that we have really
achieved something, and it empowers me to empower others,” she says. “I feel very
the year strongly that everyday Australians should have a voice, because we all have the
capacity to make a difference, I hope that my recognition gives others the belief that
they can make change too. Speak up, we must never remain silent.”

With a raft of new hotel openings and tours on

island nation, which is slightly smaller than Tasmania,

first-timers, it’s worth going on an organised tour. There

The English Lake District
This district in north-west England was recently announced as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site and it’s easy to see why. The area is home to England’s largest natural
lake – the sparkling Windermere – and the highest mountain, Scafell Pike. Writer Beatrix
Potter gained inspiration from the area, as did poets William Wordsworth and Samuel
Coleridge. There’s a museum and gallery for every taste, including The World of Beatrix
Potter. Dine in historic teahouses, visit markets to eat Grasmere Gingerbread, or try a
treetop adventure course. There are a number of tours available in the area, which
is about 3.5 hours from London by train. Visit golakes.co.uk.
