BTS/Bangtan Sonyeondan/Beyond the

Scenes/Bulletproof Boy Scouts is a South Korean kpop band who has gained much recognition

in the last few months of 2017. BTS debuted on June 13, 2013 with the single No

More Dream of the album 2 Cool 4 Skool, gaining slight fame throughout the world, but were

still barely known. They later released their first mini album O!RUL8,2 that September with the

leading track N.O. As they continue to make music and are soon releasing their 2017 fall

comeback, BTS reels in more fans by the hour as their music is spread worldwide, interesting

individuals that are taken aback by their well thought out and meaningful music.

In 2010, BigHit Entertainment held

an audition in Seoul, South Korea. Originally,

the group only consisted of Kim Namjoon

(Rap Monster) and another rookie. The

auditions were held after BigHit announced

that they were going to turn BTS into a boy

group. This led to Min Yoongi (Suga) and

Jung Hoseok (J-Hope) auditioning and

joining along with other rookies who were in the original line up. Namjoon had been an
underground rapper who was unestablished, Yoongi was an underground rapper in Daegu, and

Hoseok was part of an underground dance team who participated in many competitions. As the

auditions closed, about 4 of the original members left to pursue other options; one known as

Supreme Boi became an avid producer for BigHit as he felt that the idol life wasnt meant for

him.

The auditions were held once again in 2011 and 4 other members joined. These young

men are known as Kim Seokjin (Jin), Kim Taehyung (V), Park Jimin, and Jeon Jeongguk

(Jungkook). Jin had been a University student at

the University of Konkuk studying as a film

student. He auditioned for an acting role under a

different company when he decided that he

would instead be working with BigHit as part of

the group, undergoing intense voice and dance

lessons. Jimin had been the top student in Busan

High School of Modern Dance, when he then

transferred to Korean Arts High school in

Daegu. Taehyung had also been studying at the same school when he went to the auditions with

a friend as moral support, however, when he decided to audition himself, he was accepted in

place of his friend. Jungkook was very popular among agencies at 13, and was cast by 7 different

companies. He later accepted BigHits offer after he witnessed Namjoon rapping, instantly being

drawn to him.

Their first albums of the school trilogy gave off a punk schoolboy vibe that lead people to

believe that this ragtag team of kids were bad boys. In reality, they were just getting a feel for the
industry and stardom. Their next album, The Most Beautiful Moments in Life pt.1 was much

more sophisticated and thought out. The entirety of the album told an in depth story about the

hardships of society and how they were expected to live their lives, as well as painting a picture

of their own sorrows and joys. Throughout the process of the albums release, they leaked teaser

videos to form a mini drama that left the fans

grasping for theories to put together. Initially,

The video released for I Need U left everyone

feeling saddened by the depressing footage that

included Jungkook being beat up by two

anonymous men, Taehyung killing his father,

Jimin drowning himself in a bathtub, Hoseok

overdosing on pills, Yoongi burning down his

home, Namjoon working as something he hates,

and Jin ridding himself of beauty as he

throws away flower petals. This album also

features songs such as Save Me, Converse High,

Dope, and Outro; Love Is Not Over. Save Mes

music video features the band dancing in a

windy plain on a grey, cloudy day in casual

clothes. Dopes music video features the members in all different attire, and eventually they all

come together wearing work clothes and police uniforms. Outro; Love Is Not Over and Converse

High do not have designated music videos.

Their next album, The Most Beautiful Moments in Life pt.2 was released on November

27, 2015. This track's main feature was the song Run, which was connected to I Need U, depicts

the same message of wasted youth. This video is dreamlike, relishing in fights, friendship,

sadness, and happiness. The first part shows Taehyung falling backwards into a pool of water as

the song Butterfly plays, which has led us to believe that this represents death, as water is tied to

the afterlife in ancient Greek culture. The next piece is Namjoon walking out of a small house

and trekking along the train tracks. He arrives at the train cab he was looking for, opens it up,

and suddenly we are transported to a house where the rest of the members are, partying.

Taehyung is there, spray painting Jins outline in red paint while on the wall next to them reads

the line wasted youth enters the void. Throughout the video, we see that there are 3 pairs and

one who stands alone. Theres Taehyung and Namjoon, Jungkook and Yoongi, Hoseok and

Jimin, and Jin is on his own within the group. In one of the more intense moments, we watch as

Jin builds a house of cards (linking us to another song on the track House of Cards) and

Taehyung breaks it down. Some speculate that this resembles Taehyung's part in all of their

depression, causing them all to fall down along with him. It then shoots to Hoseok waking up in

a strange prison-like hospital room (thought to be connected to his overdose in I Need U) as

Jimin walks up to him with a pillow, smiling. This leads to a happy pillow fight, making feathers

shower over them and coat the floor. A lot of the video shows them running through the city as a

team, looking happy, and then will cut off to show them getting into trouble or fighting each

other. The last bit shows them stopping a stream of cars in a highway tunnel to vandalize/yell at

the cars and driver. This is thought to resemble reckless and rebellious youth, and them

displaying their anger and frustration towards themselves. This era is what their following
albums are based on, following the skit and expressing themselves through dramatic music

videos and songs.

The reason I have fallen so in love with this band is their sound. Its unlike anything I've

ever heard produced. The first time I heard of them was

on Oct. 10, 2016 when their Blood Sweat & Tears song

was released. I was sitting in the library with my

friends during study hall, the last class of the day,

surfing YouTube. I saw that it was in my

recommendations and clicked on it, remembering back

in 8th grade when my friend had gotten my into a band

called Exo that was also kpop. As soon as I pressed

play I knew I was definitely into it. The video began

as the 7 men wandered into a sort of castle with

artwork and statues covering the walls. Jin is

particularly drawn to a specific painting, and then we

are transferred into a new room covered in velvet

drapery as the song begins. Throughout the video,

we are led through different scenes of

each members having their own

struggles or displays of power.

Immediately, I began taking pictures

of the members and sending them to

my friend, asking if she knew them.

She told me that the boy I was most interested in was named Jungkook and I was instantly

hooked. I went home after that and watched more music videos, trying to distinguish the boys

from each other. I bought some of their music on iTunes and watched clips of Jungkook on

YouTube until I was yelling along to the music.

I spent the next month only talking about BTS and Jungkook and how much I loved

them, and started to learn the dances. Of course it annoyed my friends that I was so obsessed, but

I assured them that it was just a faze and they should let me talk myself silly until I grew out of

it. Nearly a full year later and here I am, in deeper than I was in the beginning.
