DAILY PLAN
Lesson Title: Painting Emotions Grade Level: Pre K

S & S Statements: This will be an introductory lesson on representational colors, lines, forms, &
shapes in order to express emotions in art.

Concepts and Skills: Students will develop a successful interpretation of art expression using color,
line, shape, & form through a range of musical influences.

Vocabulary: Abstract
Line / Shape / Form

Purpose of Lesson (Overall Lesson Objective): Students will be able to successfully convey
emotion through colors, lines, shapes, & forms when presented with different musical
influences.

Objectives: Given a short video clip presentation from the movie Inside Out, students will observe
the five main emotions (Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, & Disgust) as well as the
colors & shapes used to characterize them.

Given tempera paints, students will successfully implement their knowledge of line,
shape, form, & color when presented with different musical influences in order to
express five different emotions.

Assessment Criteria:
Students will be able to convincingly express emotion through lines, shapes, forms, & colors.

Art Materials Necessary for the Lesson:


Paintbrushes
Tempura Paints (Green, Blue, Yellow, Red, Purple)
Containers for Water
Paper Plates (Paint Palettes)
Construction Paper
Paper to cover over desks
Tape
Paper Towels
Wet Napkins / Baby Wipes (if needed)

Introduction: Introduction

- Show Inside Out video clip on the projector - Students will watch the video &
afterwards, recall the emotions that
- Review the different emotions that were were shown
shown in the video
- Students will draw out what they think
- Discuss what sorts of movements you would anger, joy, sadness, etc look like in the
make if you were angry, sad, etc air with their fingers

- Recall the emotions & their appearance - Students will describe the appearance
of each emotion in the video
- Brief overview on what emotions colors
represent - Students will actively participate in
discussion about lines & colors
- Acknowledge the use of harsh line work to

Development: - Students will listen to the song playing


during the demonstration & discuss
- Prepare your paints & brushes & then place what emotion it makes them feel
a large sheet of construction paper on the
board - Students will observe the teachers use
of movement & color to portray the
- One teacher will play a random song & the emotion they feel
other will free-paint their emotions onto the
page using only one color - Students will observe & review the
proper brush cleaning techniques
- Demonstrate how to properly clean a
paintbrush in order to keep colors from - If needed, students will watch another
