The life where nothing was ever

unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or
unusual. The life without colour, pain
or past
Plot chart
Inciting incident: Jonas is nervous about the ceremony of the twelves where he gets assigned his life time job.

Rising action:
1. Jonas finds out that his life time job is as the Giver but he starts out as the Receiver of Memory.
2. As soon as he starts his job, the Giver starts to give Jonas his memories back.
3. As he receives the memories he realizes he has feelings and hes the only one who has them.
4. Jonas starts to be able to see colors, when the community only sees in black and white. (his first color is red)
5. Jonas learns about the Givers daughter Rosemary being released and the meaning of release (to be killed by
injection).
6. Jonas learns that his dad is the person who does the releases.
7. The Giver and Jonas plan to run away.

Climax: Jonas runs away with his baby brother Gabe to avoid Gabes release.

Falling Action: Jonas and Gabe face hard times when they escape to Elsewhere. They
are cold, hungry and have to hide from the community planes. He is able to use his memories to protect them at times, but other times
he knows the suffering and can do nothing.

Resolution: Jonas and Gabe ride into Elsewhere on a sled and they hear music
The setting
He had never seen aircraft so close, for it was against the rules for Pilots to fly over the community. Occasionally, when supplies were
delivered by cargo planes to the landing field across the river, the children rode their bicycles to the river bank and watched, intrigued,
the unloading and then the take off directed to the west, always away from the community. (Pg. 1-2)

The main charter is jonas, who lives in a small community by a river. Everything in his community is regulated and seemingly
perfect. At a specific age children are given the perfect family to fit them, later the perfect job, and most days the perfect weather. Jonas
is becoming a 12 and at the ceremony of the twelves he is given his job as receiver. The group at the ceremonies that gives the jobs and
governs the community is called the committee of elders. The chief elder is a woman and she determines job assignments, declares
holidays, enforces rules, and even decides who lives or dies.
By having the committee Jonas world has no crime, poverty, suffering, or war. Everyone and everything is equal. The most
important thing seems to be keeping everyone happy and comfortable. The adults of the community are assigned spouses and each
couple gets exactly two kids. When the children grow up the family unit dissolves and the adults all live together until they can't take
care of themselves. Then they go the house of the old until they are released from the society. When someone is released it actually
means that they are being killed by lethal injection but most people don't know that. They think they are going Elsewhere. This is all
apart of the plan to keep everything perfect. In three words I would describe the setting of the giver as ideal, managed, dystopic. I
chose the word ideal because everything in the community has been planned so that no one has to make a decision and nothing ever
goes wrong so they think. It seems managed because they are told what they can and can't do their whole life. Lastly I chose dystopic
because it is a utopian society that goes wrong

Tone
No. Wrong word, Jonas thought. Frightened meant that deep , sickening feeling of something terrible about to
happen. (Pg.1)

The perspective of the narrator is in third person and he/she tells the story from Jonas (the main character) point of
view.
The reactions of the narrator can be described as informative. He or she is just telling the story and giving us
background information about the community.
The word choice sets the tone by drawing you in and making you want to keep reading to find out what happens
next.
- In three words, the tone of the novel, as indicated by this passage, is Modest, commanding, and paranoid.
Mood
Now, empowered to ask questions of utmost rudeness and promised answers he could,
conceivably (though it was almost unimaginable), ask someone, some adult, his father perhaps: Do you
lie? But he would have no way of knowing if the answer he received were true.

This passage makes me feel frustrated because I want to know what happens next but I don't want to
read it.
This passage uses the idea of deceit to set a suspension mood
In general, emotions of the characters in my novel are suppressed.
In three word the mood of the passage is contemplative, suspenseful, and pessimistic.
Archtypes: the heros journey
The hero of the book is jonas

The heros journey

1. The hero struggles for something valuable and important.

Jonas struggles to save his little brother. When Jonas finds out that his little brother might be killed, he tries to save
him by running away from the community with him.
2. The hero has a guide or guides.
Jonas guide is the Giver. The Giver teaches Jonas things about the communitys past and present. These are things
that most do not know. He also gives Jonas back his own memories.
Situational archetype: the quest
The quest is described as what the hero must accomplish in order to bring fertility back to the wasteland, usually for
some talisman, which will restore order and normalcy to a troubled land.
Jonas quest is different from this example because he is trying to save himself and his family from the corrupt word
instead of trying to save the world. Jonas quest is to save his baby brother from getting killed and the way he does it
is by running away from everything.
Quote: "Things could change, Gabe. Things could be different. I don't know how, but there must be some way for
things to be different. There could be colors. And grandparents. And everybody would have memories. You know
about memories." Chapter 16, pg. 128
Character archetype: the mentor
The mentor is an older, wiser teacher to the initiates. He often serves as a father or or mother figure. He gives the
hero gifts (weapons, food, magic, information), serves as a role model or as a heros conscience.
The mentor is the Giver, he is the mentor of Jonas. He teaches Jonas things about the community that most do not
know and he also gives Jonas back his memories.
Quote: I liked the feeling of love, Jonas confessed. He glanced nervously at the speaker on the wall, reassuring
himself that no one was listening. I wish we still had that, he whispered. Of course, he added quickly, I do
understand that it wouldn't work very well. And that it's much better to be organized the way we are now. I can see
that it was a dangerous way to live. (This is a quote from Jonas when he gets memories back from the Giver.)
Symbolic Archetypes: the threshold
The threshold is a gateway to a new world which the hero must enter to change and grow.
The threshold in The Giver is where Jonas runs away to get away from everything thats wrong in his community.

Quote: For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing. Behind him,
across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps, it
was only an echo.
Themes
1. Topic: love Theme: relationships.
Jonas realization of his love for family strengthens his relationships.

2. Topic: censorship Theme: uncertainty

The discovery of censorship in the community leads to an uncertainty of the future.

3. Topic: freedom Theme: empowerment

The ability to achieve freedom leads to a feeling of empowerment
Vocabulary
Dystopian society
Utopia
Conformity

The giver is a dystopian society because everything goes wrong by the end and people in the book are cruel. People who break the rules
three times? For the Old? Do they kill the old to?yes, its true.

The giver seems like a utopia because everything seems good and normal but really it is a messed up community. The life where nothing
was every unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or unusual. The life without color, pain or past.

In the giver conformity is expected. Everyone has to follow the same rules and orders and cannot have their own thoughts or ideas. The
giver says,we gained control of many things. But we had to let go of others.then Jonas says if everythings the same, then there arent any
choices!
Creative choice
Main message of novel
The author is saying that society is full of loss and pain
and if we had no long term memories the past would be
forgotten and we could live in peace

The novel is warning that even though the community seems to

be perfect it is flawed because each person is limited
intellectually and emotionally
